Book Doctors and Their Careers

Download or read book Doctors and Their Careers written by Isobel Allen and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study looks at the factors, both organisational and practical, affecting the activity and participation rates of women doctors. It is estimated that half of those entering medical schools will be women by the 1990s, and it is therefore important to assess the main influences on the careers of women doctors. Their contribution will be a key factor in future medical manpower planning and the Department of Health and Social Security, in initiating this research, recognised that it required more information on the careers of women doctors for four main purposes: 1) to be able to project more accurately the contribution women doctors will make in future towards the total supply of doctors, and, in particular, to anticipate any changes or trends in activity or participation rates; 2) to identify the main obstacles, whether institutional or domestic, which prevent women from participating as fully as they would like in medicine; 3) to improve the usefulness, accuracy and realism of careers advice in medicine at all stages from school to post-graduate training; 4) to assess the extent to which women doctors have found their aspirations limited more by the demands of the medical career system, based on the assumption of unbroken careers and full-time working, rather than by their own ambitions.
