Book excerpt: Tomando como ponto de partida uma abordagem sobre a diversidade linguística a partir das concepções elaboradas pelos alunos do ensino fundamental II, esta pesquisa, qualitativa de cunho etnográfico, tem como objetivo principal contribuir com as discussões que envolvem o ensino de língua portuguesa centrada em uma pedagogia culturalmente sensível aos saberes dos alunos. A pesquisa de campo foi desenvolvida com 23 alunos na faixa etária de 10 a 11 anos de idade de uma turma do 6o ano de uma escola pública estadual em Salvador – Bahia. O aporte teórico deste estudo, desenvolvido a partir da Linguística Aplicada, contempla a sociolinguística educacional com foco na pedagogia culturalmente sensível. Nas discussões, duas perspectivas são contempladas, quais sejam: linguagem e ensino; os saberes dos alunos. Além disso, o trabalho propõe uma reflexão sobre o papel do professor na construção de um ensino de língua comprometido com a formação plena do cidadão e contra toda forma de exclusão social pela linguagem. Os dados foram gerados a partir de registros em diário de campo, questionários, atividades experimentais e entrevistas. Para analisar os dados, descrevemos o perfil dos alunos e comparamos o que dizem os estudos sobre a variação linguística com o que dizem os alunos sobre o tema. Os resultados mostraram-se relevantes não apenas para as discussões e implicações metodológicas e político ideológicas concernentes ao ensino de língua portuguesa na atualidade, mas, especialmente, para a reflexão de questões fundamentais para a construção de um ensino de língua materna democrática e não excludente.

Book excerpt: Esta tese investiga a relação entre ensino e variação linguística, por meio da análise das ações de educadores do Ensino Fundamental diante da presença em sala de aula de um fenômeno em variação linguística socialmente estigmatizado. Em um trabalho de pesquisa longitudinal, com dois anos de coleta de dados (2008/2009), averiguamos a relação entre a posição adotada pelos educadores frente à variação em estudo na fala dos estudantes e a preservação dessa variedade linguística em um grupo de adolescentes (de 13 a 16 anos, no período de desenvolvimento da pesquisa). A comunidade, na qual se encontra a escola, mantém características culturais e linguísticas de descendentes de italianos, com uma acentuada interferência da coiné vêneta (constituída por uma mescla de dialetos do norte da Itália, especialmente o vêneto) na fala em português. Essa interferência se evidencia especialmente por um fenômeno de variação fonológica, com a produção de tepe em contextos de vibrante múltipla, levando à produção de "caro" quando o esperado seria "carro". Os resultados da pesquisa, com a análise quantitativa dos dados linguísticos, mostraram, em primeiro lugar, uma acentuada variação na fala dos estudantes, que produziram tepe em 76% dos contextos de vibrante múltipla tanto em início de palavra, como em "Roma", quanto em posição intervocálica de vibrante múltipla, como em "terra". Observamos, ainda, uma lacuna entre a concepção dos educadores acerca do fenômeno em variação e as ações que efetivamente desenvolvem em sala de aula. Embora os educadores afirmem, em entrevista, a existência de preconceito social em relação à variedade da qual os alunos são detentores, não desenvolvem ações efetivas em sala de aula na explicitação das questões sociais, históricas e políticas que envolvem a variação linguística. Os resultados desta tese apontam para a necessidade de formação dos educadores (de todas as áreas) no tocante aos usos orais da língua para que compreendam e oportunizem aos estudantes a compreensão da diversidade linguística, destituindo-se (educadores e educandos) do preconceito linguístico e, ao mesmo tempo, tornando os estudantes competentes no uso das variedades de prestígio que constituem o português brasileiro, assegurando uma efetiva educação linguística democrática.

Book excerpt: O presente trabalho analisa cinco manuais didáticos para o ensino de português como língua estrangeira (PLE) publicados no Brasil, com o objetivo de averiguar o tratamento dado à questão da diversidade lingüística brasileira nesses materiais. A partir dos pressupostos teóricos da Sociolingüística Variacionista e de estudos recentes sobre o paradigma pronominal de sujeito no português brasileiro (PB) são examinados e discutidos: (i) a concepção de língua e de gramática que norteia os manuais analisados; (ii) a atenção dispensada à noção de competência comunicativa/sociolingüística dos falantes; e (iii) o modo como o material didático apresenta o quadro de pronomes sujeito no PB, especialmente no que se refere às formas pronominais e à expressão ou não do sujeito. Verificou-se que: (i) o material didático examinado, em geral, baseia-se nas gramáticas normativas e em critérios de 'certo' e 'errado'; (ii) a competência sociolingüística dos falantes não é contemplada; e (iii) os livros didáticos estão, de certo modo, atentos às inovações do paradigma pronominal do PB, embora insistam em exercícios artificiais que não desenvolvem a competência comunicativa do aluno estrangeiro. Com esta dissertação, busca-se fazer uma ponte entre pesquisa e ensino, procurando contribuir não só com o elaborador de material didático, mas também com o professor de português como língua estrangeira, em formação ou não.

Book excerpt: Walking away is both refusal and production (Tuck & Yang, 2014), a seeming paradox taken up in work on fugitivity and marronage (Diouf, 2021; Grant, Woodson, & Dumas, 2021; Harney & Moten, 2013; Hartman, 2007), survivance (Powell, 2002; Sabzalian, 2019; Vizenor, 2008), testimonios (Calderon-Berumen, 2021; Delgado Bernal, Burciaga, & Flores Carmona, 2012; Latina Feminist Group, 2001), and other forms of critical pedagogy and curriculum. In other words, walking away presumes both the rejection of a form of status quo (walking away from something) and a new direction taken (a walking toward something else). In the context of education, many teachers and researchers have reached that breaking point where/when no more curricular/pedagogic violence can be survived, and it is in that moment that those researchers and teachers actively remove themselves from those systems and assert new courses with new possibilities. This edited volume is a collection of works chronicling acts of refusal that manifest as walking away. In some cases what is walked away from is the erasure of experience in curriculum while in others it is a fundamentalist religious experience. In still other cases what is walked away from is the carceral nature of school discipline policies. In each case walking away is resistance, refusal, and re/co-producing new possibilities and agencies.
