Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Dictionary of the Church The scope of the work is such as necessarily to embrace many points of importance, already made familiar through the periodical press, or by the expositions of writers ever ready to consecrate their services to the Church. With the province of these, it is not the object of the present sketches to interfere. We offer the outline; others have given the finished picture. And the reader whose interest this little volume may have excited, will equally gratify himself and the writer, by renewing his investigations in the more elabo rate works of others. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Church Dictionary The Church Dictionary, of which the Sixth Edition is now published, appeared originally in the shape of monthly tracts, intended by the writer to explain to his parishioners the more important doctrines of the Church, and the fundamental verities of our religion. The title of Church Dictionary was adopted from a work published with a similar object in America, by the Rev. Mr. Staunton; and the work itself assumed the character of short dissertations on those theological terms and ecclesiastical practices, which were misrepresented or misunderstood by persons who had received an education external to the Church. Book A Dictionary of English Church History Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Dictionary of English Church History Classic Reprint written by S. L. Ollard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Dictionary of English Church History Such an object would have been unattainable without the help of many scholars. From the outset the idea of the Dictionary was approved and aided by those English bishops best known as Church historians - the present Bishop of Bristol (dr. G. F. Browne), the late Bishop of Gibraltar (dr. W. E. Collins), and the late Bishop of Salisbury (dr. John Wordsworth). Illness unhappily prevented the Bishop of Bristol and the late Bishop of Gibraltar from contributing articles; while the late Bishop of Salisbury had completed only two of his promised articles when, to the heavy loss of English learning, he was removed by death. The Dictionary is intended not so much for the scientifically trained historian as for the ordinary member of the English Church who desires to know the best ascertained facts in the history of the society to which he belongs. To attain this result in one volume compression and some omissions have been necessary. Yet, notwithstanding this, it is hoped that the broad features of the story have been covered. Any lack of proportion in treatment is due to the consideration that a subject admittedly Obscure, when treated by an expert, demands more generous space than a subject already familiar, for which authorities are easily accessible. In fairness to the contributors, it should be said that many articles have been rigorously compressed owing to exigencies of space. It has not been thought necessary to insist on uniformity in the spelling of proper names as to which scholars of repute differ. References have been appended to most articles, designed not so much to justify the conclusions arrived at, as to direct the reader to fuller and more detailed treatment of the matter discussed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Church Dictionary: A Practical Manual of Reference for Clergymen and Students Dr. Hook's Church Dictionary is so well and widely known, that it is scarcely necessary now to give a further description of its origin and aim than by mentioning that it arose from the great want felt by its author, in the management of his parish, of some book of reference for the laity as well as for the clergy upon the leading facts of the history, the economy and constitution of the Church. That Dean Hook was exceptionally fitted for the task, by his wide experience and success as a parish priest, by his learning, and by his literary skill, has been freely admitted on all hands. Since the first issue of the Church Dictionary, in the year 1842, it has passed through no less than thirteen editions, each of which underwent more or less of improvement and addition. But of late years there has been such a great increase of activity in the Church, and such a vast extension of her energies in every direction; such advances also have been made in Biblical and Liturgical criticism, as well as in the knowledge of ecclesiastical history, antiquities, and art, that it seemed desirable to submit the whole Dictionary to a thorough revision. This indeed was the view taken by the late Dean, who expressed to his son an opinion that nearly the whole of it ought to be rewritten if it was to be brought up to the level of modern requirements. The truth of this has been felt by the present editors during the progress of their work. It has been found necessary, or desirable, to rewrite or completely recast many of the old articles, and to add many new ones. Book excerpt: Anglicanism arguably originated in 1534 when Parliament passed the Act of Supremacy, which transferred papal power over the Church of England to the king. The dictionary section has over 700 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, concepts and institutions, rituals and liturgy, events and national communities. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 1158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ecclesiastical Law of the Church of England, Vol. 1 of 2 The last edition of Dr. Burn's Ecclesiastical Law was edited by me in 1842. Since that period many and important alterations have been made in that law. The present Treatise incorporates considerable portions of Dr. Burn's Work, but it is framed upon a totally different model, and, while it contains a very large portion of entirely new matter, omits those subjects over which the Ecclesiastical Courts have ceased to exercise jurisdiction. The dictionary form adopted by Dr. Burn, how ever superficially convenient, appears to me fatal to any attempt to produce the law in the form of a system arranged according to the principles of science. Book A Dictionary of Ecclesiastical Terms

Download or read book A Dictionary of Ecclesiastical Terms written by John S. Bumpus and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Dictionary of Ecclesiastical Terms: Being a History and Explanation of Certain Terms Used in Architecture, Ecclesiology, Liturgiology, Music, Ritual, Cathedral Constitution, Etc Washing or purification, either of the hands or the sacred vessels. The word is generally used to signify the rinsing of the chalice after the Holy Communion with wine and water, which are reverently drunk by the celebrant (cf. 6th Rubric after Communion Service). In some churches it is customary to sing a short and appropriate sentence of Scripture, with the 117th Psalm - an antiphon, in fact - during the Ablutions. Such sentences have been set to music by various composers, notably Dr W. H. Monk, who, in 1869, wrote four, appropriate to various seasons, for the use of the Church of St Matthias, Stoke Newington, where, from 1852 to 1889, he was organist and director of the choir. They are unpublished. At St Paul's, since 1892, the 150th Psalm has been sung in this place to an ancient chant, arranged by Sir George Martin, organist of the Cathedral. From Easter Day to Trinity Sunday, both inclusive, "Alleluia" is added, forming a very effective termination to the Communion Service at St Paul's, once described by Gounod as the finest thing of its kind on this side the Alps. (1) The Italian term for the Church style; vocal music unaccompanied. (2) Church music in duple time, innumerable examples of which may be found among the masses, motetts, and anthems of the earlier English, Flemish, Italian and Spanish Schools of vocal composition. Our own countryman, Dr Nares (1715-1783), marks his excellent anthem, "Call to remembrance," Alla Cappella. The foreign alla cappella style, with English adaptations, has been much in vogue of late years in some of our principal choirs, such as those of St Paul's and Westminster Abbey. There can be no objection to this, so long as it is not overdone, and so long as the sterling and genuine cathedral music of the last three centuries is not excluded.
