Book The Early Dutch Sinologists 1854 1900

Download or read book The Early Dutch Sinologists 1854 1900 written by Koos (P.N.) Kuiper and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-07-10 with total page 1206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Early Dutch Sinologists Koos Kuiper gives a detailed account of the studies and work of the 24 Dutchmen trained as “interpreters” for the Netherlands Indies before 1900. Most began studying at Leiden University, then went to Amoy to study southern Chinese dialects. Their main functions were translating Dutch law into Chinese, advising the courts on Chinese law and checking Chinese accounts books, later also regulating coolie affairs. Actually their services were not always appreciated and there was not enough work for them; later many pursued other careers in the Indies administration or in scholarship. This study also analyses the three dictionaries they compiled. Based on a wealth of primary sources, it gives a fascinating picture of personal cross-cultural contacts.

Book Vernacular Chinese Character Manuscripts from East and Southeast Asia

Download or read book Vernacular Chinese Character Manuscripts from East and Southeast Asia written by David Holm and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-07-14 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection brings together studies on vernacular manuscripts in regional Chinese dialects such as Cantonese and Hokkien (South Fujian dialect), those of non-Han peoples in China and Southeast Asia such as the Zhuang and Yao, and a vernacular character manuscript in Vietnamese. Across this wide range, the focus is on manuscripts written in regional and vernacular adaptations of the Chinese script. Three chapters on Yao manuscripts each focus on a different aspect of their use in local society or on collections of Yao manuscripts in overseas collections; there are three chapters on Zhuang and related Tai languages; two studies on Hokkien; one on the Cantonese script in contemporary Hong Kong; and one on a Buddhist manuscript with Vietnamese chữ nôm commentary from a temple in Bangkok. Detailed descriptions of traditional paper manufacture in the villages are given for both the Yao and the Zhuang, as well as paper analysis used to date a Vietnamese manuscript. Coverage includes information about the physicality of the manuscripts investigated and the vernacular Chinese scripts in which they are written, but also a wealth of information about their use and significance in local society. This collection will be of interest to scholars and students interested in the philological analysis of East and Southeast Asian character scripts and manuscript traditions, but also the broader social contexts of manuscript use in traditional and modern society.

Book Evolving Identities

Download or read book Evolving Identities written by Vincent B. Y. Ooi and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evolving Identities is an analysis of the English language in two historically-linked Southeast nation states, Singapore and Malaysia. It details what it means to use English as an everyday language in these countries, and as the medium of international currency at the same time. Written by leading practitioners, the volume is organised in terms of three broad perspectives: macro-linguistic issues, micro-linguistic ones, and the wider implications for recording descriptive (and prescriptive) norms in the dictionary -- since it is the role of the dictionary to record the language. This book will appeal to those who have the vested interest of understanding the nature of linguistic hybridity and resolving its use in both local and global settings.

Book Authentic Chinese Christianity

Download or read book Authentic Chinese Christianity written by Koen De Ridder and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume intends to tackle two problems. The first is the historical framework of imperialism - until now widely applied by Western and Chinese scholars as an approach to the Christian evangelization movement in China. The theological aspect of the missionary action is seldom taken into account, nor is religion treated as an authentic human experience. In this volume two authors try to place the position of the Christian mission in its broader context. Scott Somers reflects on the changing image of the Japanese occupation in Taiwan, based on protestant missionary sources; Koen De Ridder discusses the early diplomatic contacts between China and Belgium and the position of the Belgian missionaries. A second problem dealt with is that of the native Christians. While Jessie Lutz attempts to sketch a profile of the Chinese Protestant evangelizers, Jean-Paul Wiest focuses his attention on the Roman Catholics among the Chinese Hakka minority. Gary Tiedemann explains the material, spiritual and political incentives for conversion among the inhabitants of North China, paying special attention to the socio-political profile of the converts. In the contribution of Ann Heylen we return to Taiwan, where we are offered a better understanding of the Protestant contribution to the study of the Min language. Finally, Karel Steenbrink describes the changing religious affiliation of assimilated Chinese in Indonesia during the period 1900-1942.

Book Changing Taiwanese Identities

Download or read book Changing Taiwanese Identities written by J. Bruce Jacobs and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-03 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The peoples of Taiwan have been influenced by many different cultures and migrations throughout the island’s history. In the 20th and early 21st centuries especially it has been a stage for cultural and ethnic conflict, not least because of the arrival of mainland Chinese fleeing the Chinese Communist Revolution. The subsequent tensions between those who see Taiwan as a natural territory of China and those who would prefer to see it remain independent have brought to the fore questions of what it is to be ‘Taiwanese’. This book addresses the question of how Taiwanese identities have changed after the Taiwanization process which began in the 1990s. It also examines the impact of this process on cross-strait relations between Taiwan and the People's Republic of China after the return of the Kuomintang to power after 2008 and the Sunflower movement in 2014. The various contributors between them cover a range of topics including the waves of migration to Taiwan, changes of political regimes, generational differences and social movements. Taken as a whole, this book presents a nuanced picture of the patchwork of identities which exist in contemporary Taiwan.
