Book excerpt: This unnerving work is a contemplation of the middle–class existence in a changing world, narrated by an unstable man held hostage by his deteriorating mental state. The story begins with the unhappy marriage of junior clerk Earl Summerfield to the much older Bianca. Feeling victimized by his cold wife and mocking superiors at work, Earl decides to keep a diary, a chronicle of his apparently crumbling marital relations, the paranoia and abuses he is seemingly forced to tolerate at work, and the world around him going to pieces in 1960's San Francisco. What he sees, what he says, what he wants to say – everything swarms his head and consciousness, inciting and fueling fantasies of love, ambition, and avenging the violent crimes with which he was become obsessed. His angry and unstable mind alternates between feelings of apprehension and disgust, and exploring his own violent, sexual fantasies, and Earl takes action first by breaking into other peoples' houses and then fixating on various women, before settling with utmost and troubling certainty on the local beauty queen, Mara St. John's.

  • Author : Friedrich Reck

Download or read book Diary of a Man in Despair written by Friedrich Reck and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2013-02-12 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hailed as one of the most important works on the Hitler period, this is an “astonishing, compelling, and unnerving” portrait of life in Nazi Germany between 1936 and 1944—from a man who nearly shot Hitler himself (The New Yorker) Friedrich Reck might seem an unlikely rebel against Nazism. Not just a conservative but a rock-ribbed reactionary, he played the part of a landed gentleman, deplored democracy, and rejected the modern world outright. To Reck, the Nazis were ruthless revolutionaries in Gothic drag, and helpless as he was to counter the spell they had cast on the German people, he felt compelled to record the corruptions of their rule. The result is less a diary than a sequence of stark and astonishing snapshots of life in Germany between 1936 and 1944. We see the Nazis at the peak of power, and the murderous panic with which they respond to approaching defeat; their travesty of traditional folkways in the name of the Volk; and the author’s own missed opportunity to shoot Hitler. This riveting book is not only, as Hannah Arendt proclaimed it, “one of the most important documents of the Hitler period,” but a moving testament of a decent man struggling to do the right thing in a depraved world.

Book The Diary of a Nobody Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Diary of a Nobody Classic Reprint written by George Grossmith and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diary of a Nobody It would be presumption for a writer of humble attainments to add anything to the splendid eulogy which Lord Rosebery has penned on the merits of The Diary of a Nobody. That the book has run through so many editions is proof conclusive the public have fully appreciated its delicate irony and subtle humour. But if it be a work of supererogation to dwell on the charm of the Diary itself, there is scope for discourse in the lives of its authors, George and Weedon Grossmith. Both have passed away, one but quite recently, leaving behind them a record of honourable work and distinguished achievement. Both found their ultimate art medium by a process of evolution - the elder through the Press entrance to the Bow Street Police Court, the other by way of the South Kensington Art Schools. We reached London Saturday night although the officials who came on the boat at Liverpool were loath to lose us. We were given numbers and waited our turn for the examination of our passports. It was all done intelligently, the undesirables being waived aside and sent in to a board of inquiry under the military. Theat rical people without labor permits for instance; British subjects who had been conspicuous only for their absence during the war; one young fellow, American born, who had skipped down to his father's planta tion in South America. They aren't going to deal any too leniently for the next few years with the boy who did not show an inclination to fight. I suppose some one reported the Ameri can young fellow. Book The War Outside My Window

Download or read book The War Outside My Window written by Janet Elizabeth Croon and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2018-06-01 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A remarkable account of the collapse of the Old South and the final years of a young boy’s privileged but afflicted life. LeRoy Wiley Gresham was born in 1847 to an affluent slave-holding family in Macon, Georgia. After a horrific leg injury left him an invalid, the educated, inquisitive, perceptive, and exceptionally witty twelve-year-old began keeping a diary in 1860—just as secession and the Civil War began tearing the country and his world apart. He continued to write even as his health deteriorated until both the war and his life ended in 1865. His unique manuscript of the demise of the Old South is published here for the first time in The War Outside My Window. LeRoy read books, devoured newspapers and magazines, listened to gossip, and discussed and debated important social and military issues with his parents and others. He wrote daily for five years, putting pen to paper with a vim and tongue-in-cheek vigor that impresses even now, more than 150 years later. His practical, philosophical, and occasionally Twain-like hilarious observations cover politics and the secession movement, the long and increasingly destructive Civil War, family pets, a wide variety of hobbies and interests, and what life was like at the center of a socially prominent wealthy family in the important Confederate manufacturing center of Macon. The young scribe often voiced concern about the family’s pair of plantations outside town, and recorded his interactions and relationships with servants as he pondered the fate of human bondage and his family’s declining fortunes. Unbeknownst to LeRoy, he was chronicling his own slow and painful descent toward death in tandem with the demise of the Southern Confederacy. He recorded—often in horrific detail—an increasingly painful and debilitating disease that robbed him of his childhood. The teenager’s declining health is a consistent thread coursing through his fascinating journals. “I feel more discouraged [and] less hopeful about getting well than I ever did before,” he wrote on March 17, 1863. “I am weaker and more helpless than I ever was.” Morphine and a score of other “remedies” did little to ease his suffering. Abscesses developed; nagging coughs and pain consumed him. Alternating between bouts of euphoria and despondency, he often wrote, “Saw off my leg.” The War Outside My Window, edited and annotated by Janet Croon with helpful footnotes and a detailed family biographical chart, captures the spirit and the character of a young privileged white teenager witnessing the demise of his world even as his own body slowly failed him. Just as Anne Frank has come down to us as the adolescent voice of World War II, LeRoy Gresham will now be remembered as the young voice of the Civil War South. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes From a Diary, Vol. 1 of 2: 1886-1888 The volumes, which I now offer to the kind con sideration of my friends, record the more interesting things I heard or saw during the two years which followed my departure from Madras. As, for the first time since I was returned for the Elgin District in the year 1857, I found myself, on the 8th of December 1886, with no definite work to do, the entries in my Diary became immediately more numerous, since in it I rarely took notice of anything relating either to politics or official business, which claimed the lion's share of my time and thoughts between those two dates. These volumes contain, amongst other things, an account of two visits to Palestine, the second of which extended over a winter and spring. Book A Diary from Dixie Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Diary from Dixie Classic Reprint written by Mary Boykin Chesnut and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Diary From Dixie Mrs. Chesnut's Diary are vivid pictures of the social life that went on uninterruptedly in the midst of war; of the economic conditions that resulted from blockaded ports; of the manner in which the Spirits of the people rose and fell with each victory or defeat, and of the momentous events that took place in Charleston, Montgom ery, and Richmond. But the Diary has an importance quite apart from the interest that lies in these pictures. Mrs. Chesnut was close to forty years of age when the war began, and thus had lived through the most stirring scenes in the controversies that led to it. In this Diary, as perhaps nowhere else in the literature of the war, will be found the Southern spirit of that time expressed in words which are not alone charming as literature, but genuinely human in their spontaneousness, their delightfully uncon scious frankness. Her words are the farthest possible re moved from anything deliberate, academic, or purely intel lectual. They ring so true that they start echoes. The most uncompromising Northern heart can scarcely fail to be moved by their abounding sincerity, surcharged though it be with that old Southern fire which overwhelmed the army of mcdowell at Bull Run.
