Book excerpt: Anxiety disorders are among the most prevalent forms of adult and childhood psychiatric disorders, and they tend to be chronic. Evidence suggests that anxiety aggregates in families. One familial characteristic that has consistently been found to differ and has received more emphasis in the literature is the construct of parental control. Overall, there appears to be an increased level of control in anxious families versus nonanxious families. Synthesizing the anxiety, parenting, and developmental literatures, there appears to be a need to examine the impact of parental anxiety and control on children across various ages. A conceptual model was proposed based on the extant literature. In the present study, several paths from this model were tested. This study sought to examine: maternal control behavior as a mediator between maternal anxiety and child anxiety; child age as a moderator between maternal anxiety and maternal control behavior; child age as a moderator between maternal control behavior and child anxiety. A total of 108 mother-child dyads participated in the current study, 56 with a maternal primary anxiety diagnosis and 52 with no axis I maternal diagnosis within the child's lifetime. Children ranged from 3 to 12 years old. Both mother and child were administered diagnostic interviews, and they participated in behavioral interaction tasks, which were subsequently transcribed and coded for behavioral observations of maternal control behaviors. Parents also completed demographic and anxiety self-reports. Hypotheses were partially supported. Maternal control behaviors were not found to mediate the relationship between maternal anxiety and child anxiety. The second hypothesis of child age moderating the relationship between mother anxiety and maternal control behaviors was partially supported. It was significant for BAI scores, but not maternal diagnosis. Finally, the third hypothesis of child age moderating the relationship between maternal control behaviors and child anxiety was supported, using both child diagnosis and child severity scores as dependent variables. Potential explanations for these findings, links to the literature, implications for the conceptual model, strengths and weaknesses of the current study, and suggestions for future research are presented.

Parenting behaviors (e.g., high psychological control) have been implicated in increased risk for child and adolescent anxiety, but these associations have not been studied in emerging adults (ages 18-25) or using a developmental psychopathology approach that considers how the relationship between parenting behavior and youth mental health may vary across youth development. Accordingly, the current study examined whether maternal psychological control is significantly associated with anxiety symptoms in emerging adults, and whether the magnitude of this association varies among emerging adults and youth. Participants (n = 70 emerging adults, n = 43 youth) completed questionnaires about parenting behavior and anxiety symptoms. Regression analyses revealed that emerging adults whose mothers were higher in psychological control experienced higher anxiety than emerging adults whose mothers were lower in psychological control. The opposite association was observed in youth. Findings have implications for family-focused interventions.

Book excerpt: Depression is a widespread condition affecting approximately 7.5 million parents in the U.S. each year and may be putting at least 15 million children at risk for adverse health outcomes. Based on evidentiary studies, major depression in either parent can interfere with parenting quality and increase the risk of children developing mental, behavioral and social problems. Depression in Parents, Parenting, and Children highlights disparities in the prevalence, identification, treatment, and prevention of parental depression among different sociodemographic populations. It also outlines strategies for effective intervention and identifies the need for a more interdisciplinary approach that takes biological, psychological, behavioral, interpersonal, and social contexts into consideration. A major challenge to the effective management of parental depression is developing a treatment and prevention strategy that can be introduced within a two-generation framework, conducive for parents and their children. Thus far, both the federal and state response to the problem has been fragmented, poorly funded, and lacking proper oversight. This study examines options for widespread implementation of best practices as well as strategies that can be effective in diverse service settings for diverse populations of children and their families. The delivery of adequate screening and successful detection and treatment of a depressive illness and prevention of its effects on parenting and the health of children is a formidable challenge to modern health care systems. This study offers seven solid recommendations designed to increase awareness about and remove barriers to care for both the depressed adult and prevention of effects in the child. The report will be of particular interest to federal health officers, mental and behavioral health providers in diverse parts of health care delivery systems, health policy staff, state legislators, and the general public.

Book excerpt: This dissertation examined the prediction of anxiety symptoms over time during developmentally significant periods - the transition to middle school (12 years old) and the transition to high school (15 years old). Specifically, relationships between child behavioral inhibition, paternal anxiety, maternal anxiety, and parental control and concurrent levels of adolescent anxiety at each time point were analyzed. Despite a strong research base supporting individual connections between child behavioral inhibition, levels of parental control, parental anxiety symptoms and adolescent anxiety, the joint longitudinal associations have received scant attention in the literature. The current study also compared two different models of adolescent anxiety, a mediated model of adolescent anxiety and a moderated model of adolescent anxiety, to determine which better fit the data. Data for the study was part of the Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development (SECCYD), a study funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). Participants initially enrolled in the study were 1,364 children (659 girls and 705 boys) and their caregivers and were recruited from 10 different geographic locations in the United States. The current study demonstrated associations between child behavioral inhibition, paternal anxiety, maternal anxiety, parental control and adolescent anxiety and suggests that they predict adolescent anxiety at 15 years. This study also indicated that earlier levels of adolescent and parental anxiety predict later levels of adolescent and parental anxiety and that parental anxiety symptoms have implications for concurrent and future levels of adolescent anxiety. Further research concerning the risk and protective factors as they relate to the etiology of adolescent anxiety should be explored to positively guide therapeutic interventions and shape appropriate parental behaviors.
