Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Detailed Course of Qualitative Chemical Analysis of Inorganic Substances: With Explanatory Notes Some explanation of the origin and purpose of the present work is necessary. It arose out of the difficulty experienced in attempting to give a thorough course of qualitative analysis in limited time to large classes of students. The smaller text-books on the subject are too elementary in character to use in connection with such a course; they devote too little attention to the precautions to be observed to insure delicacy of the reactions, to the difficulties encountered by the student in actual work, and to the modifications of the process required in special cases. On the other hand, the manual of Fresenius, though complete and very valuable as a work of reference, is confusing to beginners on account of the complexity of its arrangement and insufficient explanation of the purposes of the various operations. The attempt has been made in the following pages to present an almost equally thorough scheme of qualitative analysis in a more concise and readily intelligible form. The process of analysis here given was based originally on that of Fresenius, but it has undergone a number of important modifications suggested by experience with it in the laboratory. Among these may be specially mentioned the directions for the preparation of the substance for analysis and those for testing for acids, which have been made as distinct and definite as possible; for it is with these two parts of the process that the greatest difficulty is usually experienced. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Systematic Course of Qualitative Chemical Analysis of Inorganic and Organic Substances: With Explanatory Notes The exhaustion of the second edition of this book and the greatly increased demand for it, have encouraged the author to publish a new and revised edition. In the latter, the features which made the former edition valuable to students have been retained, but a careful revision has been made and much new matter added. The scheme for the acids is greatly improved and many charts have been introduced which it is believed will add to the usefulness of the book. The author is very much indebted to Dr. Joseph S. Goldwag for the considerable work he has done in the revision and for the introduction of many new charts as well as for his careful proofreading and indexing. It is hoped that the new edition will meet with the same generous appreciation as was accorded the former.
