Excerpt: ...It is said to be a great enemy to the rattlesnake, which it often attacks and destroys. It effects its purpose by leaping up and dropping perpendicularly, with its fore feet joined together, upon the snake, from which it bounds away again in an instant. A repetition of the attack soon overcomes the enemy. THIs species is a native of India, where it is mostly found in heavy grass jungles along the banks of the rivers. It is an extremely indolent animal, feeding at night, and passing most of the day in sleep. And it is said, but apparently with more humour than credit, that on this account it is averse to and will not remain in the vicinity of wild pea fowl. If this be true, we cannot but feel compassion for an animal placed in a crowded and noisy menagerie, whose nerves are too delicate for the scream of a peacock! It must lose many a peaceful slumber! In this animal, as in some other species of Deer, the shape of the skull gradually conforms to the origin of the horns, giving these the appearance of growing as if from the lower part of the muzzle. IT is the general opinion of naturalists that the Zebu is but a variety of the common Ox, although it is not easy to ascertain the causes by means of which the distinctive characters have been produced in the two races. The influence, however, of climate, cultivation, and food, may have brought about peculiarities, the chief of which consist in the slenderness of the legs of the Zebu, and the fatty hump on its back, whilst the identity of the two races seems to be con-. firmed by the fact, that the distinctions vanish by the intermixture of the breeds, and are entirely'lost at the end of a few generations. The Zebu is a native of India, where it varies in size from that of a large Mastiff...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Civilised by beasts tells the story of nineteenth-century Dublin through human-animal relationships. It offers a unique perspective on ordinary life in the Irish metropolis during a century of significant change and reform. At its heart is the argument that the exploitation of animals formed a key component of urban change, from municipal reform to class formation to the expansion of public health and policing. It uses a social history approach but draws on a range of new and underused sources, including archives of the humane society and the zoological society, popular songs, visual ephemera and diaries. The book moves chronologically from 1830 to 1900, with each chapter focusing on specific animals and their relationship to urban changes. It will appeal to anyone fascinated by the history of cities, the history of Dublin or the history of Ireland.

Book Urban Histories of Science

Download or read book Urban Histories of Science written by Oliver Hochadel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-09-20 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells ten urban histories of science from nine cities—Athens, Barcelona, Budapest, Buenos Aires, Dublin (2 articles), Glasgow, Helsinki, Lisbon, and Naples—situated on the geographical margins of Europe and beyond. Ranging from the mid-nineteenth to the early twentieth centuries, the contents of this volume debate why and how we should study the scientific culture of cities, often considered "peripheral" in terms of their production of knowledge. How were scientific practices, debates and innovations intertwined with the highly dynamic urban space around 1900? The authors analyze zoological gardens, research stations, observatories, and international exhibitions, along with hospitals, newspapers, backstreets, and private homes while also stressing the importance of concrete urban spaces for the production and appropriation of knowledge. They uncover the diversity of actors and urban publics ranging from engineers, scientists, architects, and physicians to journalists, tuberculosis patients, and fishermen. Looking at these nine cities around 1900 is like glancing at a prism that produces different and even conflicting notions of modernity. In their totality, the ten case studies help to overcome an outdated centre-periphery model. This volume is, thus, able to address far more intriguing historiographical questions. How do science, technology, and medicine shape the debates about modernity and national identity in the urban space? To what degree do cities and the heterogeneous elements they contain have agency? These urban histories show that science and the city are consistently and continuously co-constructing each other.

Book excerpt: Bryozoan Studies 2022 contains nineteen papers presented at the 19th International Conference of the International Bryozoology Association held at Trinity College Dublin in August 2022. Bryozoans are complex and fascinating colonial organisms that range from Cambrian to the present day and which are found in marine and freshwater environments from pole to pole and subtidal to abyssal. Recent tomographic techniques have revolutionised the study of modern and fossil taxa where internal structures are revealed through non-destructive methodologies. Here the internal structure of some Ordovician and Eocene taxa is illustrated through these methods. Phylogenetic studies of bryozoans question the classic classification of the group; here the phylogeny of species from California and Japan is described. Other topics covered are assessments of Recent faunas from Haiti and fossil assemblages from Mexico and the United States. Distributional patterns from the Arctic and New Zealand and the dispersal patterns of bryozoans on rafted pumice and on slipper lobsters are characterised. Further contributions provide descriptions of a rare Permian taxon, clarification of species assigned to the Upper Palaeozoic genus Stenopora, avicularia in Wilbertopora, enigmatic structures in a fenestrate bryozoan, repair structures in trepostomes, and an assessment of skeletonisation in the families of Palaeozoic orders.
