Book Avian Use of Quitobaquito Springs Oasis Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument Arizona Classic Reprint

Download or read book Avian Use of Quitobaquito Springs Oasis Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument Arizona Classic Reprint written by R. Roy Johnson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Avian Use of Quitobaquito Springs Oasis, Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, Arizona As a result of historic disturbances, Quitobaquito Springs passed to National Park Service management in a highly disturbed condition. Photographs of the area from the first half of the twentieth century show a shallow and broad expanse of water surrounded by a largely open area with little woody vegetation. Shortly after National Park Service acquisition, the open water area was drained, bulldozed, and diked into a discrete pond. Human disturbances were prevented after this time, eliminating the shallow, gravelly, open shore zone which was formerly attractive habitat for migrant shorebirds and wading birds (nabhan et al. And allowing a dense thicket of water-loving vegetation to develop around the pond. The development of dense riparian vegetation around the pond may, however, have increased the usefulness of the area to some resident breeding birds. In summary, the vegetation around Quitobaquito Springs has changed greatly within historic times. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Rowlands and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-09 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Flow Regimes and Canyon Bottom Vegetation Dynamics at Walnut Canyon National Monument, Arizona The Water Rights Branch of the Water Resources Division, National Park Service, contracted with the Cooperative Park Studies Unit1 to determine the historical flow regimes and canyon bottom vegetation dynamics at Walnut Canyon National Monument (w aca), Arizona. The prehistoric and historic flow regimes for Walnut Canyon as well as their effect upon the associated vegetation are not well documented or understood. Since the turn of the century, hydrologic conditions have changed due to construction of dams and other water diversions. Concomitantly, changes in riparian and aquatic habitat and composition have been cm-going Brian This study endeavors to understand this complex hydrologic-vegetative system through field research, resurvey of past studies, and synthesis. Book Manual of Grasses for North America

Download or read book Manual of Grasses for North America written by Mary E. Barkworth and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2007-09-15 with total page 1552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grasses are the world’s most important plants. They are the dominant species over large parts of the earth’s land surface, a fact that is reflected in the many different words that exist for grasslands, words such as prairie, veldt, palouse, and pampas to mention just a few. As a group, grasses are of major ecological importance, as soil binders and providers of shelter and food for wild animals, both large and small. Some grasses, such as wheat, rice, corn, barley, rye, tef, and sugar cane are major sources of calories for humans and their livestock; others, primarily bamboos, are used for construction, tools, paper, and fabric. More recently, the seed catalogs that tantalize gardeners each winter have borne witness to an increasing appreciation of the aesthetic value of grasses. The Manual of Grasses for North America is designed as a successor to the classic volume by Hitchcock and Chase. It reflects current taxonomic thought and includes keys, illustrations, and distribution maps for the nearly 900 native and 400 introduced species that have been found in North America north of Mexico. In addition, it presents keys and illustrations for several species that are known only in cultivation or are of major agricultural significance, either as progenitors of bread wheat and corn or as a major threat to North American agriculture because of their ability to hybridize with crop species. The Manual of Grasses for North America is a major reference work for grasses that will retain its value for many years.

Book Battle Against Extinction

Download or read book Battle Against Extinction written by W. L. Minckley and published by . This book was released on 1991-12 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1962 the Green River was poisoned and its native fishes killed so that the new Flaming Gorge Reservoir could be stocked with non-native game fishes for sportsmen. This incident was representative of water management in the West, where dams and other projects have been built to serve human needs without consideration for the effects of water diversion or depletion on the ecosystem. Indeed, it took a Supreme Court decision in 1976 to save Devils Hole pupfish from habitat destruction at the hands of developers. Nearly a third of the native fish fauna of North America lives in the arid West; this book traces their decline toward extinction as a result of human interference and the threat to their genetic diversity posed by decreases in their populations. What can be done to slow or end this tragedy? As the most comprehensive treatment ever attempted on the subject, Battle Against Extinction shows how conservation efforts have been or can be used to reverse these trends. In covering fishes in arid lands west of the Mississippi Valley, the contributors provide a species-by-species appraisal of their status and potential for recovery, bringing together in one volume nearly all of the scattered literature on western fishes to produce a monumental work in conservation biology. They also ponder ethical considerations related to the issue, ask why conservation efforts have not proceeded at a proper pace, and suggest how native fish protection relates to other aspects of biodiversity planetwide. Their insights will allow scientific and public agencies to evaluate future management of these animal populations and will offer additional guidance for those active in water rights and conservation biology. First published in 1991, Battle Against Extinction is now back in print and available as an open-access e-book thanks to the Desert Fishes Council.

Book At the Desert s Green Edge

Download or read book At the Desert s Green Edge written by Amadeo M. Rea and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 1997-11 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Akimel O'odham, or Pima Indians, of the northern Sonoran Desert continue to make their home along Arizona's Gila River despite the alarming degradation of their habitat that has occurred over the past century. The oldest living Pimas can recall a lush riparian ecosystem and still recite more than two hundred names for plants in their environment, but they are the last generation who grew up subsisting on cultivated native crops or wild-foraged plants. Ethnobiologist Amadeo M. Rea has written the first complete ethnobotany of the Gila River Pima and has done so from the perspective of the Pimas themselves. At the Desert's Green Edge weaves the Pima view of the plants found in their environment with memories of their own history and culture, creating a monumental testament to their traditions and way of life. Rea first discusses the Piman people, environment, and language, then proceeds to share their botanical knowledge in entries for 240 plants that systematically cover information on economic botany, folk taxonomy, and linguistics. The entries are organized according to Pima life-form categories such as plants growing in water, eaten greens, and planted fruit trees. All are anecdotal, conveying the author's long personal involvement with the Pimas, whether teaching in their schools or learning from them in conversations and interviews. At the Desert's Green Edge is an archive of otherwise unavailable plant lore that will become a benchmark for botanists and anthropologists. Enhanced by more than one hundred brush paintings of plants, it is written to be equally useful to nonspecialists so that the Pimas themselves can turn to it as a resource regarding their former lifeways. More than an encyclopedia of facts, it is the Pimas' own story, a witness to a changing way of life in the Sonoran Desert.
