Download or read book Evaluating the Effectiveness of Correctional Education written by Lois M. Davis and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2013-08-21 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After conducting a comprehensive literature search, the authors undertook a meta-analysis to examine the association between correctional education and reductions in recidivism, improvements in employment after release from prison, and other outcomes. The study finds that receiving correctional education while incarcerated reduces inmates' risk of recidivating and may improve their odds of obtaining employment after release from prison.

Book A DESCRIPTIVE ANALYSIS OF POST SECONDARY INSTITUTIONAL APPLICATIONS FOR EX OFFENDERS

Download or read book A DESCRIPTIVE ANALYSIS OF POST SECONDARY INSTITUTIONAL APPLICATIONS FOR EX OFFENDERS written by Brandon G. Peebles and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upon release from incarceration or other forms of supervision, many former offenders struggle with the transition to lead productive and crime-free lifestyles. Many of their struggles are endured in housing, employment and education markets. Most notably, education has been linked to decrease in recidivism, as well an increase in the chances of employment. The higher the level of education, particularly the attainment of post-secondary education, the more likely former offenders are to succeed in obtaining stable housing and employment. In addition, former offenders are significantly more likely to refrain from criminal activity when they obtain some form of post-secondary education. However, post-secondary education remains the least attained level of education among former offenders, as well as the least commonly offered in correctional institutions. This leaves the majority of offenders to pursue post-secondary education upon release from correctional supervision. This exploratory study examined admissions applications through The Common Application, from post-secondary institutions across the United States to see which types of institutions are inquiring about criminal history. Previous research has been quite scarce, with only three national surveys having measured institutional admissions practices. This study combines all of the demographic variables of previous studies with geographic location and enrollment size to expand literature on criminal history inquiry in college and university admissions. Also, the type of criminal history inquiry, such as felony or misdemeanor conviction, is detailed in this study. Results show that criminal history inquiry is at a low with The Common Application, but notes large, public PSEIs in the South and Midwest are likely to inquire about criminal history. Specifically, inquiry mainly included felony and sexually-related convictions. Implications of the findings for offender reentry education are discussed.

Book Post secondary Correctional Education and Recidivism

Download or read book Post secondary Correctional Education and Recidivism written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current figure of United States citizens serving time behind bars stands at about 2 million. Recidivism rates range from approximately 41% to more than 60% depending on method of measurement. The 1994 Crime Bill ended Pell Grant eligibility for prison inmates, significantly cutting the depth and breadth of higher education programs in prisons and jails. In order to curtail further cuts, and to increase the number and scope of such programs, their efficacy must be verified. The relationship of post-secondary correctional education (PSCE) and recidivism has been widely studied with various, idiosyncratic results. A meta-analysis of ten years of existing studies was conducted to synthesize a portion of the past research. This study demonstrates, using relevant studies reported from 1990 6 1999, that there is a positive correlation (+.31) between PSCE and recidivism reduction. These results are statistically significant. Four subsets, or moderator analyses, were also positively related to recidivism reduction and statistically significant. These included (1) PSCE program completers versus completers and participants; (2) reincarceration only as the recidivism construct; (3) length of recidivism measure; and (4) studies using control groups to negate possible selection bias. It is hoped that this information will increase interest, justification, and funding of future PSCE programs.

Book An Educational Transition

Download or read book An Educational Transition written by Greg Bartholomew and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the transition of a post-secondary correctional education (PSCE) system formerly facilitated by higher education to the current system administered by the State Department of Corrections (SDC). This study used qualitative case study methodology utilizing multiple perspectives from five different stake-holding groups or five socials units: state legislators, county law enforcement personnel, state higher education administrators, SDC personnel, and technical college personnel. A thick, rich description of the transition was obtained by relying on multiple perspectives recorded in interviews of stakeholders in PSCE. The stakeholders0́9 perception of this educational transition that changed PSCE in one state was shaped by personal perspectives on issues surrounding the education of the incarcerated. The rhetoric, political machinations, and reality of this transition define stakeholders0́9 perspectives of the driving forces that initiated the facilitation of PSCE from a Higher Education run system to one run by the SDC.

Book Can In prison Interventions Affect Post release Outcomes

Download or read book Can In prison Interventions Affect Post release Outcomes written by Jack Lucas Tilley and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper evaluates the impact of in-prison educational and vocational programs on recidivism among former inmates released from prisons in five different states during 1994. It is the first study to consider this particular topic using a subset of nationally representative data. Two sets of microeconometric analyses are performed in order to identify potential program effects. Initially, a basic multivariate framework is considered in which special consideration is given to problems of program heterogeneity; next, a propensity score matching (PSM) approach is used to address the issue of self-selection inherent in observational studies of this kind. The findings of this study are twofold. First, in evaluating correctional education programs, it is important to account for program heterogeneity not only in the form of multiple program types, but also stemming from cross-state differences. All of the regression analyses performed here indicated that the level of association between recidivism and program participation varied according to program type and also across states: participating in educational programs was generally found to significantly reduce the risk of recidivist behavior, whereas vocational programs had a negative but insignificant association with post-release outcomes. Second, this study underscores the importance of addressing issues of self-selection bias when evaluating prison programs and motivates the need for a more rigorous methodology.
