Book A Definitive Approach to Outsourcing Aircraft Maintenance

Download or read book A Definitive Approach to Outsourcing Aircraft Maintenance written by Jeffrey A. Weaver and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the next decade, U.S. air carriers are expected to outsource over 70 percent of all maintenance performed on their aircraft. From 37 percent in 1996 to 62 percent in 2006, the airline industry and the FAA are lagging behind the fast-paced outsourcing trend. By utilizing insufficient manpower and oversight mechanisms to properly verify the quality of the work being performed at domestic and international MRO's, the safety of aircraft and the future of air carriers are being compromised.

Book Airline Maintenance Resource Management

Download or read book Airline Maintenance Resource Management written by J C Taylor and published by SAE International. This book was released on 1998-09-25 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a primer about the leading-edge approach to maintenance operations known as Maintenance Resource Management (MRM) - a partnership of manager, doer and regulator. MRM programs at several leading carriers are reducing maintenance errors and improving the professional caliber of mechanics and managers. Although communication and coordination issues have only recently been considered as important as technological advances in the aviation community, airlines have realized that a fix exists for maintenance communications problems. The "bottom-up" technique of MRM has successfully addressed these problems through more effective sharing of information among all employees. In addition to describing the best practices now taking hold in the aviation industry, Taylor and Christensen look at what lies ahead and what the industry will need to do to match the high performance work systems in the best high-tech industries around the world.

Book Air Carriers Outsourcing of Aircraft Maintenance

Download or read book Air Carriers Outsourcing of Aircraft Maintenance written by United States. Federal Aviation Administration and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) oversight of air carriers' outsourced aircraft maintenance were reviewed. As of July 14, 2008, there were 4,159 domestic and 709 foreign repair stations certificated by FAA to perform maintenance on U.S. aircraft. When an air carrier uses an FAA-certificated repair station to repair its aircraft or parts, the repair station's organization becomes an extension of the air carrier's maintenance organization. Our audit objectives were to (1) identify the type and quantity of maintenance performed by external repair stations and (2) determine whether FAA is effectively monitoring air carriers' oversight of external repair stations' work and verifying that safety requirements are met. Exhibit A details our audit scope and methodology, and exhibit B lists the entities we visited or contacted. Our work on outsourced maintenance has continually found that the issue is not where maintenance is performed but that maintenance requires effective oversight. Outsourced maintenance requires a multifaceted, risk-based oversight approach, and it is important that each of these elements work together successfully.--P. i.

Book Applied Human Factors in Aviation Maintenance

Download or read book Applied Human Factors in Aviation Maintenance written by Manoj S. Patankar and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considering the global awareness of human performance issues affecting maintenance personnel, there is enough evidence in the US ASRS reports to establish that systemic problems such as impractical maintenance procedures, inadequate training, and the safety versus profit challenge continue to contribute toward latent failures. Manoj S. Patankar and James C. Taylor strongly believe in incorporating the human factors principles in aviation maintenance. In this, their second of two volumes, they place particular emphasis on applying human factors principles in a book intended to serve as a practical guide, as well as an academic text. Features include: - A real 'how to' approach that serves as a companion to the previous volume: 'Risk Management and Error Reduction in Aviation Maintenance'. - Self-reports of maintenance errors used throughout to illustrate the systemic susceptibility for errors as well as to discuss corresponding solutions. - Two tools - a pre-task scorecard and a post-task scorecard - introduced as means to measure individual as well as organizational safety performance. - Interpersonal trust and professionalism explored in detail. - Ethical and procedural issues associated with collection and analysis of both qualitative as well as quantitative safety data discussed. The intended readership includes aviation maintenance personnel, e.g. FAA-type aircraft mechanics, CAA-type aircraft maintenance engineers, maintenance managers, regulators, and aviation students.

Book Practices and Perspectives in Outsourcing Aircraft Maintenance Edward Czepiel

Download or read book Practices and Perspectives in Outsourcing Aircraft Maintenance Edward Czepiel written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this study was to identify the most common criteria that airlines use to select, monitor, and assess the performance of third-party maintenance facilities. These criteria formed the basis to develop performance measures and risk indicators for the operation of aviation maintenance repair stations. In particular, this study focused on outsourcing of major maintenance to larger repair stations. A limited data collection effort was conducted by interviewing representatives from both airlines and repair stations, primarily in their respective quality assurance departments. The most important measures and risk indicators are grouped into three areas. The most important measures for repair station capabilities include training of employees, experience level of employees, and tools and test equipment of the repair station. The most important measures for repair station performance include audit procedures, ability to meet turn times, number of work discrepancies, suspected unapproved part(s) infractions, and certification infractions of the repair station. The most important measures for repair station administration include the financial status of the repair station and change in management of the repair station.
