Book Dryden an Essay of Dramatic Poetry

Download or read book Dryden an Essay of Dramatic Poetry written by Revised By William T. Arnold and published by Atlantic Publishers & Dist. This book was released on 2006 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dryden S Main Contribution To Literary Criticism Is Represented By An Essay Of Dramatic Poesy In Which In The Form Of A Lively Dialogue His Views On Drama Are Propounded. In This Landmark Of English Criticism, Dryden Examines Five Important Issues : The Relative Merits Of Ancient And Modern Poets, The French Versus The English School Of Drama, The Elizabethan Dramatists Versus Those Of Dryden S Own Time, Conformation To The Dramatic Rules Laid Down By The Ancients And The Question Of Substituting Rhyme For Blank Verse.Considering The Fact That Dryden Had No Settled Body Of English Criticism To Bank Upon, His Theorising On The Form Of Drama Is A Distinguished Achievement And Many Of The Issues Raised By Him Can By No Means Be Treated As Finally Decided. Dryden S Special Advantages Were A Strong, Clear, Common-Sense Judgement And A Very Remarkable Faculty Of Arguing The Point . Add To This His Intimate Knowledge Of Both Ancient And Modern Playwrights, Including The French Masters, And His Personal Initial Experiments In Writing Plays.Thomas Arnold S Explanatory Notes Make This Volume All The More Valuable To The Scholars And Students Of Dryden As A Critic. William T. Arnold In His Revision Of The Third Edition, Made The Notes Fuller And More Helpful By, Among Other Things, Adding Quotations From Corneille.

Book Restoration Drama and the Idea of Literature

Download or read book Restoration Drama and the Idea of Literature written by Katherine Mannheimer and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2023-12-28 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1642 to 1660, live theater was banned in England. The market for printed books, however—including plays—flourished. How did this period, when plays could be read but not performed, affect the way drama was written thereafter? As Katherine Mannheimer demonstrates, the plays of the following decades exhibited a distinct self-consciousness of drama’s status as a singular art form that straddled both page and stage. Scholars have commented on how the ban on live performance changed the way consumers read plays, but no previous book has addressed how this upheaval changed the way dramatists wrote them. In Restoration Drama and the Idea of Literature, Mannheimer argues that Restoration playwrights recognized and exploited the tension between print and performance inherent to all drama. By repeatedly and systematically manipulating this tension, these authors’ works sought to court the reader while at the same time also challenging emergent concepts of "literature" that privileged textuality and print culture over the performing body and the live voice.

Book The Just and the Lively

Download or read book The Just and the Lively written by Michael Werth Gelber and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Dryden is the father of English literary criticism. In The Just and the Lively, Michael Werth Gelber provides the first complete study of his criticism since Dryden's death almost three hundred years ago. Through a detailed reading of each of his essays, the book explains and illustrates the unity and the development of Dryden's thought. It demonstrates that, even as he based his first principles on his own poems and plays, Dryden tried to resolve what, since the early sixteenth century, had been a key problem in western literature: how to reconcile the demand of classical unity with the bewildering variety of Renaissance drama and romance. The figure who emerges from these pages is a man deeply responsive to the social, political, and intellectual currents of his age. An important influence on critics as diverse as Samuel Johnson and T. S. Eliot, Dryden retains the power to enlighten and delight the reader of today.

Book The Lively Arts of the London Stage 1675 1725

Download or read book The Lively Arts of the London Stage 1675 1725 written by Kathryn Lowerre and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike collections of essays which focus on a single century or whose authors are drawn from a single discipline, this collection reflects the myriad performance options available to London audiences, offering readers a composite portrait of the music, drama, and dance productions that characterized this rich period. Just as the performing arts were deeply interrelated, the essays presented here, by scholars from a range of fields, engage in dialogue with others in the volume. The opening section examines a famous series of 1701 performances based on the competition between composers to set William Congreve's masque The Judgment of Paris to music. The essays in the central section (the 'mainpiece') showcase performers and productions on the London stage from a variety of perspectives, including English 'tastes' in art and music, the use of dance, the depiction of madness and masculinity in both spoken and musical performances, and genres and modes in the context of contemporary criticism and theatrical practice. A brief afterpiece looks at comic pieces in relation to satire, parody and homage. By bringing together work by scholars of music, dance, and drama, this cross-disciplinary collection illuminates the interconnecting strands that shaped a vibrant theatrical world.
