Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A handbook for compassion... a Must-Read Music Book.” —Rolling Stone Country "Generous and big-hearted, Gauthier has stories to tell and worthwhile advice to share." —Wally Lamb, author of I Know This Much Is True "Gauthier has an uncanny ability to combine songwriting craft with a seeker’s vulnerability and a sage’s wisdom.” —Amy Ray, Indigo Girls From the Grammy nominated folk singer and songwriter, an inspiring exploration of creativity and the redemptive power of song Mary Gauthier was twelve years old when she was given her Aunt Jenny’s old guitar and taught herself to play with a Mel Bay basic guitar workbook. Music offered her a window to a world where others felt the way she did. Songs became lifelines to her, and she longed to write her own, one day. Then, for a decade, while struggling with addiction, Gauthier put her dream away and her call to songwriting faded. It wasn’t until she got sober and went to an open mic with a friend did she realize that she not only still wanted to write songs, she needed to. Today, Gauthier is a decorated musical artist, with numerous awards and recognition for her songwriting, including a Grammy nomination. In Saved by a Song, Mary Gauthier pulls the curtain back on the artistry of songwriting. Part memoir, part philosophy of art, part nuts and bolts of songwriting, her book celebrates the redemptive power of song to inspire and bring seemingly different kinds of people together.

Download or read book Days Linked by Song written by Gerard O'Daly and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-05-24 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prudentius is often considered the greatest Latin poet of late antiquity. In this volume, O'Daly looks at Prudentius' lyric poems, the Cathemerinon, Poems for the Day, which were published early in the fifth century AD. Reflecting the religious concerns of the increasingly Christianized western Roman Empire in the age of the emperor Theodosius and Ambrose of Milan, the Cathemerinon are above all the writings of a private person, and of the ways in which his religious beliefs colour his everyday life. They speak of bird-song and morning light, they are about about the taking of food, about lighting lamps as dark sets in, and about the night's sleep. Rich in biblical themes and narratives, images and symbols (including paradise and the Fall, Exodus, Jonah, Daniel, and the Magi), they also celebrate Christ's miracles and the feasts of Christmas and Epiphany. However, while they exploit the themes of the Bible, they are also written in the classical metres of Latin poetry and make use of its vocabulary and metaphors. They achieve a remarkable creative tension between the two worlds that determined Prudentius' culture: the beliefs and practices, sacred books, and doctrines of Christianity; and the traditions, poetry, and ideas of the Greeks and Romans. A good part of the attractiveness of these poems comes from the interplay between these two worlds. The volume includes the Latin texts, English translations, and critical essays on each of the twelve poems.

This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BEARING in mind the assertion of Monsieur de Milcourt, that prefaces for the most part seem only made in order to “impose” upon the reader, a brief foreword will suffice to explain the scope of the following pages. As will be apparent at a glance, the selections are all from modern, and largely from living poets; the dominant chord is lyrical; and in the general unisance the minor prevails over the major key. No excuse seems called for in presenting a new anthology; for, given the same theme, each compiler must of necessity present a different score, subject to individual taste and preferences. “To apologize for a new anthology is but one degree less sensible than to prepare it,” pertinently remarks the editor of Ballades and Rondeaus. Such were but another case of qui s’excuse, s’accuse. It may be observed, nevertheless, that the path of the compiler is far from being strewn with flowers. Indeed, it has been truly said that Æsop’s old man and boy with the donkey had not a harder task than the maker of selections and collections of verses. Of recent years a number of excellent anthologies have been published on a similar theme. But these deal mainly with the rhythmic fancies of the elder bards, or in fewer instances, combine the older and the younger schools. In the present instance the editor has been guided solely by his own taste or predilections, having had no recourse to other collections, beyond that of avoiding excerpta too oft repeated; the aim being so far as possible to include such examples of merit as are not generally familiar to the average lover of poetry. Whether these be by well-known authors, or by those who are little known, has not entered into consideration, the prime object being to present as intrinsically meritorious a collection, by both British and American modern lyrists, as is possible within the limits of the space at command. The writer is not aware of a similar compilation having been previously attempted, there being few who would care to brave the “omissions” that must naturally be thrust at one’s door, more especially in the case of an abstract from the works of living writers. Yet while fault may be found, perchance, on the score of selection both by those who may be excluded, as well as by those who are included, the editor of an anthology should at least be thanked for placing many selections before the reader that in the ordinary course of things he would miss,—either through lack of time, or the inability to possess or consult the multitudinous volumes he would be called upon to peruse.
