Book Place Names of Hawaii

Download or read book Place Names of Hawaii written by Mary Kawena Pukui and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2021-05-25 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How many place names are there in the Hawaiian Islands? Even a rough estimate is impossible. Hawaiians named taro patches, rocks, trees, canoe landings, resting places in the forests, and the tiniest spots where miraculous events are believed to have taken place. And place names are far from static--names are constantly being given to new houses and buildings, streets and towns, and old names are replaced by new ones. It is essential, then, to record the names and the lore associated with them now, while Hawaiians are here to lend us their knowledge. And, whatever the fate of the Hawaiian language, the place names will endure. The first edition of Place Names of Hawaii contained only 1,125 entries. The coverage is expanded in the present edition to include about 4,000 entries, including names in English. Also, approximately 800 more names are included in this volume than appear in the second edition of the Atlas of Hawaii.

Book When Life Gives You Pears

Download or read book When Life Gives You Pears written by Jeannie Gaffigan and published by Grand Central Publishing. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Big Sick meets Dad is Fat in this funny and heartfelt New York Times bestselling memoir from writer, director, wife, and mother, Jeannie Gaffigan, as she reflects on the life-changing impact of her battle with a pear-sized brain tumor. In 2017, Jeannie's life came to a crashing halt when she was diagnosed with a life-threatening brain tumor. As the mother of 5 kids -- 6 if you include her husband -- sat in the neurosurgery department in star-covered sweats too whimsical for the seriousness of the situation, all she could think was "Am I going to die?" Thankfully, Jeannie and her family were able to survive their time of crisis, and now she is sharing her deeply personal journey through this miraculous story: the challenging conversations she had with her children; how she came to terms with feeling powerless and ferociously crabby while bedridden and unable to eat for a month; and how she ultimately learned, re-learned and re re-learned to be more present in life. With sincerity and hilarity, Jeannie invites you into her heart (and brain) during this trying time, emphasizing the importance of family, faith and humor as keys to her recovery and leading a more fulfilling life.

Book excerpt: From the green and fertile lands of Kauai Kuapapa (ancient Kauai) came the most beautiful chiefesses, the bravest heroes, the strongest warriors, and the fiercest giants. It was a land of dauntless raiders who boldly sailed out to sea while others crept cautiously from island to island. Gods and demi-gods participated in the everyday life of the people, and the places where they lived, fought, and loved were remembered and celebrated. Gathered here for the first time are the delightful stories behind the place-names of ancient Kauai. Over a period of almost two thousand years, each ridge, mountain, valley, and stream was named, as were unusual rocks, groves of trees - every corner of the island on which people lived and worked. The names tied people to the land and to places where mauli ola, the sacred essence of life, was to be found. Today these names serve as colorful windows on the past, telling of the rich and wondrous heritage of the people of Kauai Kuapapa.

Book Ke Garne

Download or read book Ke Garne written by Lani Kay Ackerman, MD, FAAFP and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014-03 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ke Garne, a common Nepali phrase which literally means, "What to do?" embodies the thinking of millions of people living in the Himalayas steeped in the belief that their karma has destined them to poverty and hopelessness. In 1991 an enthusiastic young couple, a medical doctor and an ecologist, left their jobs and sold everything to take the good news of Christ to a remote area of the Himalayas closed to traditional missions. God led them to establish and lead an organization, Health Environmental and Learning Program (H.E.L.P.), which has combined the principles of the Bible and wholistic sustainable development, following the model of Jesus's ministry. "Ke garne is the fruit from decades of boots-on-the-ground, sacrificial devotion ...Want to be guided and inspired by exemplary, real-life Christian community development? It is here in your hands." Nicholas Comninellis, MD MPH DIM and PH, Pres. & CEO, Institute for International Medicine "The Ackermans are the proof that the Holy Spirit still anoints and empowers those He chooses to spread Christ's Gospel in the most effective ways in the places most needed. If allowed, God has no limits." Lamar McNew, MD, Retired Professor, Texas A and M College of Medicine, Chairman of H.E.L.P. board. "As I read these pages and re-heard their story, precious memories of trusting the Lord for direction and provisions flooded my soul. Meet this special family, and be challenged by their obedience to the Great Commission." Dr. Don Higginbotham, Retired Pastor "This is a book that 21st Century Christians must read! In an age of "toxic charity" and misdirected mission efforts, this is a book that issues a call for mission work that starts on the inside and moves outward. I've personally seen this ministry in action in Nepal, and without a doubt, the church needs to embrace this model!" Reverend Jerry House, Pastor
