In those happy days of my Wander jahre, I ran down from Vienna for a week in Venice, prepared to exhaust its treasures in a few days; to consider St. Mark's a dingy bit of orientalism; to fully believe that the unapproachable Piazzetta was literally so, and badly arranged; to smile. In a noble family, only one daughter and one son will be allowed to marry; Donata, like all younger daughters, will be sent to a convent. Donata longs to be tutored like her brothers and to see the Venice she has glimpsed only on the map. What is the world beyond her balcony, beyond what she sees when she glides, veiled, in a gondola down the canal? She dresses as a boy and escapes the palazzo on the Grand Canal to see the world before she is shut away, and to try to find a way to escape her fate. Donata risks everything; she changes her life, and her family’s life, forever when she walks through the door and encounters a Venice she never knew existed.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Venice Empire, was, that they secured freedom of trade and intercourse within its vast boundaries. They knew how to obtain the same rights from the Italian Empire of the German emperors, and when the second millenium dawned, Venice was already considered a flourishing commercial state, richer than all her neighbours. The Doge Pietro Orseolo II., the fried of the young German Emperor Otho III., established factories and ports all along the Italian coast. The Roman coast-towns of Dalmatia, from Zara to Ragusa, rendered him homage. He was rightly conscious of being Lord of the Adriatic and expressed this feeling symbolically by an imposing and beautiful ceremony. Every year on Ascension day, he - and after him the later Doges - went to sea in a magnificently decorated boat (the Bucentoro) and celebrated his espousal of the Adriatic by throwing a golden ring into the waters. Not that the rule over Dalmatia had then by any means been assured, or even after the Byzan tine emperor had formally ceded Istria and Dalmatia to the Doge in 1074. The Venetians were, on the contrary, constantly forced to struggle against the rivalry of the Hungarians, and only enjoyed the undisputed possession of the East coast of the Adriatic after the time of the crusades. Book Marietta a Maid of Venice Classic Reprint

Download or read book Marietta a Maid of Venice Classic Reprint written by F. Marion Crawford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Marietta a Maid of Venice The glass-house was guarded from outsiders as carefully as a nunnery, and somewhat resembled a convent in having no windows so situated that curious persons might see from without what went on inside. The place was entered by a low door from the narrow paved path that ran along the canal. In a little vesti bule, ill-lighted by one small grated window, sat the porter, an uncouth old man who rarely answered ques tions, and never opened the door until he had assured himself by a deliberate inspection through the grating that the person who knocked had a right to come in. Marietta remembered him in his den when she had been a little child, and she vaguely supposed that he had always been there. He had been old then, he was not visibly older now, he would probably never die of old age, and if any mortal ill should carry him off, he would surely be replaced by some one exactly like him, who would sleep in the same box bed, sit all day in the same black chair, and eat bread, shellfish and garlic off the same worm-eaten table. There was no other entrance to the glass-house, and there could be no other porter to guard it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice Night had fallen as they drew near to Belmont. The moon light lay spread among the statues and cypresses in Portia's garden, where on a grassy bank the two lovers, Lorenzo and Jessica, talked together in low antiphons such as lovers use, and in the pauses of their talk gazed and drank in the beauty of the heavens. Word had come that the mistress of the house would return home before daybreak and close upon this came a mes senger with the news that Bassanio, too, might be expected. Lorenzo called for music: no gentler or more gracious welcome could there be for the home-comers, should they be arriving; and if not, still he and Jessica could sit till the moonlight faded, and let the sweet sounds creep in their ears, while the stillness of the garden, the embracing silent night, made harmony with the hidden lutes, as the listening heart might hear its own beating harmonies whispered back from the stars paving the floor of heaven.
