Excerpt: ...from that pursued in the case of adults. The most marked benefit will be derived from the use of the liniment, in abating the inflammatory action, especially when the powder prescribed has been administered every second night; in cases of children, of from one to two years old, for under that age we never administer more than one dose of the powder, and afterwards keep the bowels in a proper state by daily three grain doses of the powder of chalk, with mercury, and small portions of castor oil, giving a large tea-spoonful of a mixture formed of two ounces of the emulsion of gum Arabic, one scruple of powdered nitre, and one ounce of simple syrup. This tends to relieve the cough, and tends to keep the inflammatory action in subjection. However, we would never advise rubbing in more than half a dram of the soothing liniment, either on the chest, or along the spine, every four hours. There is, perhaps, no disease that is more benefited by a uniform and regulated temperature than this; and many lives, we are persuaded, might every year be saved by a ward devoted to the cure of measles being so heated, or, what is preferable, in families adopting such plans as will insure this desirable object in their own houses. Adults will, in the early stage, find oftenrepeated small doses of a mixture composed of infusion of roses and Epsom salts, combined with the tinctures of foxglove and henbane, in the same proportions as those tinctures are ordered to be mixed with the emulsion of syrup, very useful where the emulsion cannot be procured. When the eruptive fever takes on the appearance of debility, and there appear petechia; or spots, quinine, combined as in the following mixture, may with confidence be resorted to: --Sulphate of quinine, half a dram...

Book An Annotated Catalogue of the Edward C Atwater Collection of American Popular Medicine and Health Reform A L

Download or read book An Annotated Catalogue of the Edward C Atwater Collection of American Popular Medicine and Health Reform A L written by Christopher Hoolihan and published by University Rochester Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a catalogue of the Edward C. Atwater Collection of rare books dealing with "popular medicine" in early America which is housed at the University of Rochester Medical School library. The books described in the catalogue were written by physicians and other professionals to provide information for the non-medical audience. The books taught human anatomy, hygiene, temperance and diet, how to maintain health, and how to cope with illness especially when no professional help was available. The books promoted a healthy lifestyle for the readers, giving guidance on everything from physical fitness and recreation to the special health needs of women. The collection consists of works dealing with reproduction [from birth control to delivering and caring for a baby], venereal disease, home-nursing, epidemics, and the need for public sex education. These books, covering areas largely ignored by the medical profession, made important contributions to the health of the American public, and the collection is a vital piece of medical history. The collector is Edward C. Atwater, Professor Emeritus of Medicine and the History of Medicine at the University of Rochester Medical School. Christopher Hoolihan is History of Medicine Librarian at the University of Rochester Medical School's Edward G. Miner LIbrary.

This book was released on 2018-08-07 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Death Across Oceans: Archaeology of Coffins and Vaults in Britain, America, and Australia brings together the leading researchers in historic mortuary practice from Britain, North America, and Australia. It is the first book dedicated to the material culture associated with burial in the historic, English-speaking world. It combines reflections and evaluations from the pioneer scholars who initiated research in this field during the 1980s with studies by young scholars now pushing the research into a new and wider range of issues. This volume will be the seminal work in this field for some time, providing key analyses and essential bibliographic routes into site-specific literature, and setting the research agenda for the future.

Book A History of Herbalism

Download or read book A History of Herbalism written by Emma Kay and published by Pen and Sword History. This book was released on 2022-07-28 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food historian Emma Kay tells the story of our centuries-old relationship with herbs. From herbalists of old to contemporary cooking, this book reveals the magical and medicinal properties of your favourite plants in colorful, compelling detail. At one time, every village in Britain had a herbalist. A History of Herbalism investigates the lives of women and men who used herbs to administer treatment and knew the benefit of each. Meet Dr Richard Shephard of Preston, who cultivated angelica on his estate in the eighteenth century for the sick and injured; or Nicholas Culpeper, a botanist who catalogued the pharmaceutical benefits of herbs for early literary society. But herbs were not only medicinal. Countless cultures and beliefs as far back as prehistoric times incorporated herbs into their practices: paganism, witchcraft, religion and even astrology. Take a walk through a medieval ‘physick’ garden, or Early Britain, and learn the ancient rituals to fend off evil powers, protect or bewitch or even attract a lover. The wake of modern medicine saw a shift away from herbal treatments, with rituals and spells shrouded with superstition as the years wore on. The author reveals how herbs became more culinary rather than medicinal including accounts of recent trends for herbal remedies as lockdown and the pandemic leads us to focus more on our health and wellbeing.
