Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, Americans are some of the world’s biggest consumers of black teas; in Japan, green tea, especially sencha, is preferred. These national partialities, Robert Hellyer reveals, are deeply entwined. Tracing the transpacific tea trade from the eighteenth century onward, Green with Milk and Sugar shows how interconnections between Japan and the United States have influenced the daily habits of people in both countries. Hellyer explores the forgotten American penchant for Japanese green tea and how it shaped Japanese tastes. In the nineteenth century, Americans favored green teas, which were imported from China until Japan developed an export industry centered on the United States. The influx of Japanese imports democratized green tea: Americans of all classes, particularly Midwesterners, made it their daily beverage—which they drank hot, often with milk and sugar. In the 1920s, socioeconomic trends and racial prejudices pushed Americans toward black teas from Ceylon and India. Facing a glut, Japanese merchants aggressively marketed sencha on their home and imperial markets, transforming it into an icon of Japanese culture. Featuring lively stories of the people involved in the tea trade—including samurai turned tea farmers and Hellyer’s own ancestors—Green with Milk and Sugar offers not only a social and commodity history of tea in the United States and Japan but also new insights into how national customs have profound if often hidden international dimensions.

Book Imitation Counterfeiting and the Quality of Goods in Modern Asian History

Download or read book Imitation Counterfeiting and the Quality of Goods in Modern Asian History written by Kazuko Furuta and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the production of low-quality goods, the rise of markets for imitations and shoddy goods, and dishonest trading practices which developed along with the expansion of global trade in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in East Asia. Fake, imitation, counterfeit, and adulterated goods have long plagued domestic and international trade. While we are all familiar with contemporary attempts to control the manufacture and sales of such goods, economic historians have given the subject little attention, despite the fact that the growth of international trade and the lengthening of commodity chains played a major role in the spread of such practices. The problem is approached in several ways. Part I of the book examines the ways in which the asymmetry of product-quality information was reduced and mechanisms were developed to bring greater order in the markets, using case studies on cotton fiber, silk pongee, cotton cloth, fertilizer, and tea. Part II of the book focuses on problems associated with imported everyday-use items—which are referred to here as “small things”—and the role played by imitations of such everyday goods as soap, matches, glass bottles, and toys in the development of the modern economies of Japan, China and Taiwan. The project brings together the work of an international team of scholars who offer important historical perspectives on these issues, exploring the ways in which new institutions were created that continue to play a role in contemporary global economic activities.

Book excerpt: From the PREFATORY. UTILITY, not originality, has been aimed at in the compilation of this work. The difficulties and obstacles its author had met with, in his endeavors to learn something of the article he was commissioned to sell, when he first entered the Tea business, and the almost total lack of knowledge displayed by the aver- age dealer in the commodity, allied to the numerous inquiries made from time to time for a work, containing "all about tea," first prompted the undertaking. The material was collated at intervals in a fragmentary manner, and arranged amid the many interruptions incident to a business life, being subjected to constant revisions, repeated prunings and frequent corrections, due mainly, to the conflicting opinions and varying statements of authorities in every branch of the subject. Yet, as careful an arrangement of the data has been given as possible, a faithful effort being made to omit nothing that may prove useful, instructive or profitable to the general reader, or those who trade in or use the article. It was compiled under impulse, Hot under inducement. Not a line being intended originally for the market, and is published solely for those "whom it may concern." "While rendering due credit for much of the contents to the appended publications, viz., Johnson's and the Encyclopedias Britannica, Americana and similar works, its author feels called upon to express his indebtedness particularly to Mr. David M. Stone, editor-in-chief of the New York Journal of Commerce for the invariably kind, prompt and valuable information furnished him in his efforts to produce "A Cup of Tea." Aware that many errors may have been committed, and many facts have been omitted, he would ask of those who may bestow any attention on the work, to assist him by pointing out what is erratic, or furnishing what has been omitted. So that he may be enabled to rectify the one and supply the other. Still he trusts that the pains he has taken to avoid both have not been in vain, that the former may be few, and the latter of no great importance. To the critic, his reply is, that the best has been done with the abilities, facilities and opportunities at command; to the cynic and pseudo "expert" Surpass it!
