Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Banff Mountain Book Awards WINNER The spellbinding true story of retracing the extraordinary trek of Ewart "the Leopard" Grogan—the legendary British explorer who, in order to win the woman he loved, attempted to become the first person to cross Africa In 1898 the dashing British adventurer Ewart Grogan fell head-over-heels in love—but before he could marry, he needed the approval of his beloved's skeptical, aristocratic stepfather. Grogan, seeking to prove his worth and earn his love's hand, then set out on an epic quest to become the first man to cross the entire length of Africa, from Cape Town to Cairo, "a feat hitherto thought by many explorers to be impossible" (New York Times). A little more than a century later, American journalist Julian Smith also found himself madly in love with his girlfriend of seven years... but he was terrified by the prospect of marraige. Inspired by Grogan's story, which he discovered by chance, Smith decided to face his fears of commitment by retracing the explorer's amazing—but now forgotten—4,500-mile journey for love and glory through Africa. Crossing the Heart of Africa is the unforgettable account of these twin adventures, as Smith beautifully ineterweaves his own contemporary journey with Grogan's larger-than-life tale of cannibal attacks, charging elephants, deadly jungles, and romantic triumph. He’s the one who saw it happen, a year ago, but neither of us knows it…yet. He’s also the one who saves my life, but neither of us knows that yet, either. If only I’d met him sooner. If only I knew the right choices to make, then. Will his voice bring me back before it’s too late? *** Sleep? What’s that? Sure, my job and my business keep me busy, but I always make time for family. Then I meet Ripley, a teacher with a busted car and an a-hole husband, and I find myself lying to her, so I don’t make the same mistake twice. But it comes back to bite me at the worst time, and I can’t take it back. That’s when I find out the truth about Ripley. That’s when I find out things that I can’t un-find out. And now I’m stuck. Download or read book Crossing the Dead Heart written by C.T. Madigan and published by ETT Imprint. This book was released on 2023-09-01 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a classic narrative of modern exploration; a story of adventure, enterprise and patient scientific exploration, illustrated by photographs taken on the expedition. The Simpson is a sand-ridge desert extending 200 miles (322 km) west to east, the ridges running parallel from north to south at roughly quarter-mile (0.4 km) intervals, some reaching as high as 100 feet (30 m). Madigan planned a ground crossing in the winter of 1939. A party of nine, including a biologist, a botanist, a photographer and a radio operator, with nineteen camels, made the exhausting crossing from Andado station in the Northern Territory to Birdsville in twenty-five days. It verified Madigan's previous conclusions that the area was a wasteland. This last classic Australian exploration adventure pioneered the use of mobile radio communication; national broadcasts were made through the Australian Broadcasting Commission from desert camps. The scientific results were published and also a popular accound, Crossing the Dead Heart (Melbourne, 1946). He saw the 'Dead Heart' as a land of everlasting sand-ridges and salt-encrusted clay-pans; while his conclusions seemed correct then, within twenty years the area was criss-crossed by petroleum explorers. - Australian Dictionary of Biography

Download or read book Heart of the Cross written by Wonhee Anne Joh and published by Presbyterian Publishing Corp. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theologies have often pointed to the cross as a place of suffering and sacrifice, while feminist critiques have frequently argued against interpretations of the cross as patriarchal valorizing of suffering. Wonhee Anne Joh points toward a new interpretation of the cross as a place of love, where God and humanity come together in a surprising way. Interpreting the cross as performing a double gesture that has a subversive effect, Joh argues that the cross works simultaneously to pay homage to and to menace complex oppressive powers. Utilizing the Korean concept ofjeong, Joh constructs a theology that is feminist, political and love-centered, while acknowledging the cross as source of pain and suffering. Joh's innovative vision is a call for political love that is stronger than powers of oppression.

Book excerpt: Courageous and compelling, an invaluable resource for actors, directors, and teachers that can open a pathway to inner creativity. "The actor will do, in public, what is considered impossible." When the renowned Polish director Jerzy Grotowski began his 1967 American workshop with these words, his students were stunned. But within four weeks they themselves had experienced the "impossible." In An Acrobat of the Heart, teacher-director-playwright Stephen Wangh draws on Grotowski's insights and on the work of Stanislavski, Uta Hagen, and others to bridge the gap between rigorous physical training and practical scene and character technique. Wangh's students give candid descriptions of their struggles and breakthroughs, demonstrating how to transform these remarkable lessons into a personal journey of artistic growth.

Download or read book The Best Native American Stories for Children written by G.W. Mullins and published by Light Of The Moon Publishing. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Best Native American Stories For Children" features stories which have been selected for young readers, while presenting children with a chance to explore Native American history. Contained within 186 pages in 6x9 format, Mullins brings history to life along with original art by award winning artist C.L. Hause. Most Native American tribes did not write down or record their history, so we have to find out about their past in other ways. They used games, myths, dance, and impersonation to teach the children of their history and ways of life. Their storytelling was filled with family, heritage and stories of the earth. It is through storytelling, that the rich history of the Native American tribes is alive and well today. It has been shared and preserved and still pays tribute to fallen heroes of the past. It is through these glimpses into the past, and these stories much like the ones that are contained in this book, that you can see what a proud heritage they possess and how in tune with the Earth Native Americans really are. Included in this collection are: The Woman and Her Bear, The First Moccisons, At The Rainbow's End, The Gift of Corn, The Gift of the Peace Pipe, How the Deer got His Horns, The Orphan Boy Captured by the Bad Thunderbirds, Dream Walk, The Origin of Fire and the Canoe, How the Milky Way Came To Be, Turtle Goes to War, How the Bear Lost His Tail, The Origin of the Pleiades and the Pine, The Story of the Drum, Ghost of the White Deer, The Boy and the Turtles, The Story of the Buffalo-painted Lodges, The Story of the First Pine Trees, Contents of the Medicine Bag, The Legend of the Dream Catcher, How the Redbird got his Color, The Story of the Camp of the Ghosts, The Story of the Little Burnt Face Girl, Dance of the Dead, The Bear Man, How the Great Chiefs Made the Moon and the Sun, Tipi Etiquette, and many more.
