Book Saint Michael the Archangel in Medieval English Legend

Download or read book Saint Michael the Archangel in Medieval English Legend written by Richard Freeman Johnson and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cult and legends of St Michael the archangel were widespread in medieval England, and this book - the first full-length study of the subject - offers a comprehensive examination of their genesis and diffusion. Part I identifies and analyses the concerns, conflicts, and roles with which St Michael is associated, from scriptural and apocryphal literature through to the homiletic literature of the medieval period. Part II begins with a discussion of the vernacular recensions of the popular account of the archangel's earthly interventions, and goes on to survey the legendary accounts in Old English, Anglo-Norman, and Middle English of the archangel and his roles as guardian, intercessor, psychopomp, and warrior-angel follows. The Appendices contain the first English translation of the archangel's hagiographic foundation-myth; an annotated bibliographical list and motif index of textual materials relating to the archangel; and an essay on the iconographic representations of the archangel in medieval England. RICHARD F. JOHNSON is Assistant Professor of English at William Rainey Harper College.

Book The Gospel of Nicodemus and Christ s Descent Into Hell

Download or read book The Gospel of Nicodemus and Christ s Descent Into Hell written by Nicodemus and published by . This book was released on 2020-10-31 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gospel of Nicodemus, otherwise known as the Acts of Pilate (Acta Pilati) is not assumed to have written by Pilate, but rather to have been compiled from the official acts which were preserved in the praetorium at Jerusalem. The original is said to have been written by Nicodemus in Hebrew. The work gained a wide readership in the Middle Ages, with its popularity shown by the number of languages and versions in which it exists. Currently, there are known copies in Greek, Coptic, Armenian and Latin. These Acts are composed of three sections. The first section relates to the trial of Jesus and is similar to Luke 23. The second part regards the Resurrection. Then in the third part, Christ's Descent into Hell (Descensus ad Infernos), for which there is no known Greek text. In it, Leucius and Charinus, two souls who are raised from the dead after the Crucifixion tell the Sanhedrin the circumstances of the descent of Christ into Limbo. This short book gives the full Acts of Pilate along with footnotes to referring Bible passages and includes the Latin text of "Descensus ad Infernos" as an appendix. The source text for this work is "Apocryphal Gospels, Acts, and Revelations" (1870) by Alexander Walker (1825-1903).

Book The Middle English Liber Aureus and Gospel of Nicodemus

Download or read book The Middle English Liber Aureus and Gospel of Nicodemus written by C. William Marx and published by Universitatsverlag Winter. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apart from Nicholas Love's 'Mirror of the Blessed Life of Jesus Christ', the pseudo-Bonaventuran 'Meditationes Vitae Christi' was the basis for a number of other Middle English texts in verse and prose. The 'Liber Aureus and Gospel of Nicodemus', which survives in three manuscripts and a fragment, offers a distinctive contribution to the tradition that followed in the wake of the Latin text and provides a significant counterpoint to Nicholas Love's version. Whereas Love adopts from the 'Meditationes Vitae Christi' most of its rhetorical strategies characteristic of Franciscan devotion, the compiler of the 'Liber Aureus and Gospel of Nicodemus' systematically and deliberately removes these features and produces a translation in a plain style. At the same time, the compiler adds to the narrative derived from the 'Meditationes Vitae Christi' passages from the gospels as well as legendary materials. The 'Liber Aureus and Gospel of Nicodemus' is a theologically eclectic text that reveals the influences of both Wycliffite thinking on the centrality of the gospels and orthodoxy. This is the first edition of the text, and includes an introduction, commentary, appendices of marginalia and related texts, and a glossary.
