Book excerpt: The human microbiota consists of a diverse collection of microbes including bacteria, archaea, viruses and eukaryotes. These organisms carry out a variety of functions that are vital to human health and well-being. One example is the prevention of bacterial infections by commensal bacterial in the gut. In recent years research has demonstrated a link between imbalances in the gut microbiota in early life and the development of obesity and allergic diseases in later life. The mechanisms of this and how diet, life-style factors and ageing influence the composition and activity of human microbiota are other areas of active research. The application of new technologies has revolutionised research initiatives providing new insights into the dynamics of these complex microbial communities and their role in health and disease. In this timely book expert international authors review selected hot-topics in this area to provide an up-to-date overview. Topics covered include: effect of ageing and diet; dysbiosis as an environmental factor; beneficial effects of probiotics on infants and children with dysbiosis; metaproteomics of the gut microbiota; gut microbiome and neuro development; the link between oral health and neurological disease; and the influence of the gut microbiome composition on GI tract cancer. The book is essential reading for everyone working with human microbiota, probiotics and prebiotics from the PhD student to the experienced scientist.

This book was released on 2011-07-06 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to disseminate the most recent research in science and technology against microbial pathogens presented at the first edition of the ICAR Conference Series (ICAR2010) held in Valladolid, Spain, in November 2010.This volume is a compilation of 86 chapters written by active researchers that offer information and experiences and afford critical insights into anti-microbe strategies in a general context marked by the threat posed by the increasing antimicrobial resistance of pathogenic microorganisms. “Anti” is here taken in a wide sense as “against cell cycle, adhesion, or communication”, and when harmful for the human health (infectious diseases, chemotherapy etc.) and industry or economy (food, agriculture, water systems etc.)The book examines this interesting subject area from antimicrobial resistance (superbugs, emerging and re-emerging pathogens etc.), to the use of natural products or microbes against microbial pathogens, not forgetting antimicrobial chemistry, physics and material science.Readers will find in a single volume, up-to-date information of the current knowledge in antimicrobial research. The book is recommended for researchers from a broad range of academic disciplines that are contributing in the battle against harmful microorganisms, not only those more traditionally involved in this research area (microbiologists, biochemists, geneticists, clinicians etc.), but also experimental and theoretical/computational chemists, physicists or engineers.

Book The Gut Skin Axis Interaction of Gut Microbiome and Skin Diseases

Download or read book The Gut Skin Axis Interaction of Gut Microbiome and Skin Diseases written by Jianmin Chai and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-06-13 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More and more evidence has demonstrated that gut microbiome plays critical roles in modulating the development of diseases beyond the gastrointestinal tract, including skin disorders such as psoriasis. The new conception ‘gut-skin axis’ refers to the bidirectional relationship between the gut microbiome and skin health. Several mechanisms, such as intestinal barrier, inflammatory mediators, and metabolites, have been proposed for gut-skin axis. Currently, there have been various studies regarding the presence of the gut-skin axis and its resulting inflammatory effect due to gut microbiome imbalance. In addition, dysbiosis of the skin and gut microbiota is also observed in skin disorders. Therefore, understanding the gut-skin axis, especially in terms of microbiome modulation, is important for the gut and skin health, which may lead to development of novel therapies for skin disease.
