Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Critical and Grammatical Commentary on St. Paul's First Epistle to the Corinthians As it is in continuation of Commentaries that have now passed through several editions, it will not be necessary for me to detain the reader by many prefatory comments. Still as more than a generation has passed away since those Commentaries were published, the very lapse of time and the accumulation of fresh materials have imported certain changes into the present work on which it will be necessary for me briefly to Speak. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Critical and Grammatical Commentary on St. Paul's Epistles to the Philippians, Colossians, and to Philemon: With a Revised Translation This fervent, affectionate, and, in parts, pathetic Epistle was written by the apostle to his liberal and warmhearted converts in the Roman colony of Philippi. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Critical and Grammatical Commentary St. Paul's Epistles to the Philippians, Colossians, and to Philemon: With a Revised Translation This duty has now been performed. Every portion of the commentary has been read over; every interpretation has been tested; and, I might almost add, every citation of Scripture has been examined and verified anew. For this labor, which has occupied a considerable portion of the past summer. There is but little to show. The book remains nearly in all its details as well as in its larger features exactly what it was. A very few readings, and those unimportant, have been changed; a certain number of alterations have been introduced in the Revised Translation; a small number of references to standard sermons, which had been either overlooked or not known when the commentary was written, are now added; and lastly, a short introduction has been prefixed to each one of the three Epistles that are included in this volume. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Paul's Epistle to the Galatians: With a Critical and Grammatical Commentary, and a Revised Translation The latter portions of my work have been based on these somewhat remodelled principles, and - if I may trust the opinions of perhaps too partial and friendly judges - so far successfully, that I shall apparently be wise to keep them as the sort of standard to which, if God mercifully grant me life and strength, former portions of the series (wherever they seem to need it) may be brought up, and future portions conformed. The present edition then is an effort to make my earliest and decidedly most incomplete work as much as possible resemble those which apparently have some greater measures of maturity and completeness. It has involved, and I do not seek to disguise it, very great labour - labour perhaps not very much less than writing a new commentary. For though the notes remain substantially what they were before, and though I have found no reason to retract former opinions except in about four or five debateable and contested passages, I have still found that the interpolation of new matter and the introduction of exegetical comments have obliged me in many cases to alter the arrangement of the whole note, and occasionally even to face the weary and irksome task of total re-writing and reconstruction. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Paul's Epistles to the Philippians, the Colossians and Philemon: With a Critical and Grammatical Commentary The present volume forms the fourth portion of my Commentary on St. Paul's Epistles, and contains an exposition of the important Epistles to the Philippians and Colossians, and of the graceful and touching Epistle to Philemon. The notes will be found to reflect the same critical and grammatical characteristics, and to recognize the same principles of interpretation as those which I endeavored to follow in the earlier portions of this work, and on which the experiences slowly and laboriously acquired during this undertaking have taught me year by year more confidently to rely. There is, however, a slight amount of additional matter which it is perhaps desirable briefly to specify. In the first place, I have been enabled to carry out more fully and completely a system of reference to the great versions of antiquity, and have spared no pains to approach a little more nearly to those fresh and clear, yet somewhat remote, well-heads of Christian interpretation. In the notes on the Pastoral Epistles it was my endeavor to place before the reader, in all more important passages, the interpretations adopted by the Syriac, Old Latin, and Gothic Versions. To these in the present volume I have added references to the Coptic (Memphitic) and Ethiopic Versions; to the former as found in the convenient and accessible edition of Botticher, to the latter as found in Walton's Polyglott, but more especially and exclusively to the excellent edition of the Ethiopic New Testament by the late Mr. Pell Platt (1830), published by the Bible Society. I have now adopted this term, feeling convinced that the term 'Italic' is likely to mislead. The latter I retained in the previous Epistles, as sanctioned by common usage; I was, however, fully aware that the 'term vetus Itala' really belonged to a recension, and not to an independent version. In the present Epistles I have derived the Old Latin from the translation in that language as found in the Codex Claromontanus. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Critical and Grammatical Commentary on St. Paul's Epistles: To the Philippians, Colossians, and to Philemon With these three earthly aids, first, an accurate knowledge of Hellenic Greek; secondly, the Greek commentators, and thirdly, the five or six principal ancient Versions, we may (with humble prayer for the illuminating grace of the Eternal Spirit) address ourselves to the task of a critical exposition of the Covenant of Mercy; we may trust that, though often with clouded and holden eyes, we may yet be per mitted to see and to recognise some sure and certain outlines of Divine Truth: but without any of these, or with one, or even two, to the exclusion of what remain, dare we hope that our interpretations will always be found free from uncertainties and incon sistencies, and will never exhibit the tinges of indi vidual opinion, and the often estimable, but ever precarious subjectivity of religious predilections?
