Book Collaborative Relationships in Construction

Download or read book Collaborative Relationships in Construction written by Hedley Smyth and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-01-28 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book collects the latest research on both contractual andconceptual collaborative practices in construction. It identifiescommon problems faced by the industry and draws out practicalimplications. Construction projects are increasingly run in ways thatundermine the traditional boundary of the firm and sometimes alsothe definition of the project coalition. This poses challenges forconstruction firms whose clients demand ever increasing performanceimprovements as well as those firms who want to improve theirstrategies for greater collaboration to give themselves competitiveadvantage. The editors identify three main themes: collaborativerelationships, operating both in frameworks and within networks ofcontacts, e.g. relational contracting in partnering, supply chainmanagement and other procurement-driven initiatives. The second theme is frameworks, both contractual frameworksbinding parties together over a series of contracts, and conceptualframeworks used to develop future performance improvement arisingfrom the proactive strategies of firms. The third theme is the network of relationships that supportsindividuals and firms within the project coalition in deliveringservices and adding value to improve performance. These networksdefine the investment and incentives supporting the inter-firm andintra-firm relationships, as well as the formal contractualconditions through which such incentives flow. Networks ofinformation exchange define the structure of the activity and helppredict organisational configurations for successful projectoutcomes.

Book Project Management in Construction

Download or read book Project Management in Construction written by Anthony Walker and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-04-20 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As with all previous editions of Project Management in Construction, this sixth edition focuses on systems theory as the approach suitable for organizing and managing people skilled in the design and completion of construction projects. It discusses the many competing paradigms and alternative perspectives available, for example in relation to differentiation and integration, as well as the emerging study of temporary organizations and its relevance to construction project management. Whilst encompassing the need to develop further theoretical aspects of construction project organization theory, this edition has also enhanced the application of organization studies to practical issues of construction project management. More emphasis has been placed on the added complexity of construction project management by issues surrounding clients and stakeholders, and the control and empowerment of project participants. Additional focus has been placed on sustainability issues as they impinge on construction project management, on reworked views on supply chain management and on developments in partnering, together with clarification of the shifting terms and definitions relating to construction organization structures and their uses.

Book Relationship Management and the Management of Projects

Download or read book Relationship Management and the Management of Projects written by Hedley Smyth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-08-27 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relationship Management and the Management of Projects is a guide to successfully building and managing relationships as a project manager and in the project business. Relationship management is a core skill for any project business to develop capabilities and manage the interface with projects, providing guidance to project managers as they negotiate with business partners and coordinate between business functions. Whatever the structures and procedures an organization has and whatever the project management tools and techniques, they are only as good as the hands they are in. Yet relationship management, though a well-established discipline, is rarely applied to the process-driven world of project management. This book is a much-needed guide to the process of enhancing these skills to boost firm performance, team performance and develop collaborative practices. Hedley Smyth guides you through the processes of relationship management examining the theory and practice. This book highlights the range of options available to further develop current practices to ensure a successful relationship management in all stages of a project’s lifecycle. Relationship Management and the Management of Projects is valuable reading for all students and specialists in project management, as well as project managers in business, management, the built environment, or indeed any industry.

Book The Management of Complex Projects

Download or read book The Management of Complex Projects written by Stephen Pryke and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-11-20 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Value is added to projects through the relationships surrounding the client; the focus of this book is therefore the client as project, rather than the building on the ground. It shows how to create and maintain effective relationships between the client and the project team, as well as intra-coalition relationships Students, academics and practitioners need to understand the changing nature of reforms from successive calls for change by the industry’s various clients and client groups. Project team network relationships are a function of mindsets, behaviour and competencies of individuals and The Management of Complex Projects: a relationship approach: • Explores the relationship at the project interface: client-design team-contractor, stakeholders and supply chain relations • Examines different concepts to the development and management of relationships; formation and maintenance issues • Highlights some of the key issues that require development, both academically and through applied research. Most project management books cover tools and techniques; this one covers the softer skills and shows how crucial good relationships are to the successful management of projects.

Book Social Network Analysis in Construction

Download or read book Social Network Analysis in Construction written by Stephen Pryke and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-07-23 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social Network Analysis in Construction Increasingly demanding and knowledgeable clients in construction require an approach to project management that recognises both the important role played by the client in the definition of a project and the lack of certainty that large and/or complex projects present. Having identified the importance of managing relationships, both analysts and practitioners today need a sophisticated framework and methodology for observing systems and managing the complex relationships in major construction project coalitions. Social Network Analysis in Construction shows how social network analysis (SNA) can be used to observe, monitor and analyse systems and relationships. Although this has been an established analytical technique in the US for some time, it is only now being developed in the UK. Stephen Pryke spent nearly two decades investigating major project relationships using SNA and brings together here mathematical and sociological methods, and major project relationships in a manner that will inspire both academic interest and a desire to apply these concepts and techniques to live construction projects. Case studies include projects from two of the UK’s largest property developers – the UK Ministry of Defence, and a County Council. SNA is innovative – but potentially inaccessible to project management analysts and practitioners. The author provides clear and relevant explanation and illustration of the possibilities of using SNA in a major project environment. In addition to offering the potential for sophisticated retrospective analysis of a wide range of systems associated with construction and engineering project coalitions, he also looks at how we might apply the network analysis findings to the design and management of project and supply chain networks. Postgraduate students and academic researchers in Project Management and Construction Management, as well as practitioners from professional consultancies and project management companies will find here an excellent exposition of an often inaccessible subject.

Book Managing Networks in Project Based Organisations

Download or read book Managing Networks in Project Based Organisations written by Stephen Pryke and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book demonstrating how to apply the principles of social network analysis to managing complex projects This groundbreaking book gets project managers and students up to speed on state-of-the-art applications of social network analysis (SNA) for observing, analysing, and managing complex projects. Written by an expert at the leading edge of the SNA project management movement, it clearly demonstrates how the principles of social network analysis can be used to provide a smarter, more efficient, holistic approach to managing complex projects. Project managers, especially those tasked with managing large, complex construction and engineering projects, traditionally have relied upon analysis and decision-making based upon hierarchical structures and vaguely defined project systems, much of which is borrowed from historic scientific management approaches. However, it has become apparent that a more sophisticated methodology is required for observing project systems and managing relationships with today’s more knowledgeable and demanding clients. Social network analysis (SNA) provides just such an approach. Unfortunately, existing books on social network analysis are written primarily for sociologists and mathematicians, with little or no regard for the needs of project managers — until now. The first and only book of its kind, Managing Networks in Project-Based Organisations: Offers a framework and a fully-developed approach to applying SNA theory and methodologies to large, complex projects Describes highly effective strategies and techniques for managing the iterative and transient relationships between network-defining actor roles involved in the delivery of complex projects Uses numerous real-world examples and case studies of successful applications of SNA to large-scale construction and engineering projects around the world Draws on its author’s decades of experience managing complex projects for demanding clients, as well as his extensive academic research in Project Management Managing Networks in Project-Based Organisations is an important working resource for project management professionals and consultants, especially those serving the construction and engineering industries. It is also an excellent text/reference for postgraduate students of project management and supply chain management, as well as academic researchers of project management.

Book Project Management

Download or read book Project Management written by Adedeji B. Badiru and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2011-12-12 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As organizations realize the benefits of PM, the need to develop effective management tools rises with the increasing complexity of new technologies and processes. Taking a systems approach to accomplishing goals and objectives, Project Management: Systems, Principles, and Applications covers contemporary tools and techniques of PM from an established pedagogical perspective. A project can be simple or complex. In each case, proven PM processes must be followed with a world systems view of the project environment. While on-the-job training is possible for many of the PM requirements, rigorous and formal training must be used. Consequently, PM resources are of high utility. This text fills the void that exists in the availability of PM resources. Although individual books dealing with management principles, optimization models, and computer tools are available, there are few guidelines for the integration of these three areas for PM purposes. This book integrates these areas into a comprehensive guide to PM. It introduces the triad approach to improve the effectiveness of PM with respect to schedule, cost, and performance constraints within the context of systems modeling. It provides details on an integrated systems PM approach that can help diminish the adverse impacts of these issues through good project planning, organizing, scheduling, and control.
