Book Of One Mind and of One Government

Download or read book Of One Mind and of One Government written by Kevin Kokomoor and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2019-02 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Of One Mind and Of One Government Kevin Kokomoor examines the formation of Creek politics and nationalism from the 1770s through the Red Stick War, when the aftermath of the American Revolution and the beginnings of American expansionism precipitated a crisis in Creek country. The state of Georgia insisted that the Creeks sign three treaties to cede tribal lands. The Creeks objected vigorously, igniting a series of border conflicts that escalated throughout the late eighteenth century and hardened partisan lines between pro-American, pro-Spanish, and pro-British Creeks and their leaders. Creek politics shifted several times through historical contingencies, self-interests, changing leadership, and debate about how to best preserve sovereignty, a process that generated national sentiment within the nascent and imperfect Creek Nation. Based on original archival research and a revisionist interpretation, Kokomoor explores how the state of Georgia's increasingly belligerent and often fraudulent land acquisitions forced the Creeks into framing a centralized government, appointing heads of state, and assuming the political and administrative functions of a nation-state. Prior interpretations have viewed the Creeks as a loose confederation of towns, but the formation of the Creek Nation brought predictability, stability, and reduced military violence in its domain during the era.

Now his grandfather is gone, his inheritance is in trouble, someone else has his job—and he’s facing the holidays alone. Kerri Olsen’s dream is about to become a nightmare. Nine months ago, Kerri’s grandmother passed away unexpectedly, leaving her a home and business she loves—and a houseful of “collections” which have gotten entirely out of hand. Now her mother has given her an ultimatum: clean out Grandma Bess’s house and hand over the cash value of her share of the inheritance—by Christmas. Kerri always dreamed of meeting a man and raising a family here. Will she really have to sell her home to pay what she owes her mother? Ryan has known Kerri all his life, but when he meets her again the day before Thanksgiving, he realizes she represents everything he’s always loved about this town—and everything he’s always wanted in a woman. Kerri never dreamed Ryan would look at her the way he’s looking at her now. But they’re both facing a tough decision. Can they find a way to stay together in this place they call home? Or is leaving Chance Creek their only option?

She's retreated to Coyote Creek to run the bed and breakfast she inherited from her great aunt. She has no idea what she's doing, but she's wonderful with people. That must count for something, right? Despite her doubts, she's determined to make her new vocation work. She's never had an all-out Christmas and this year; she's determined to do it up in style for herself, and her holiday guests. Maybe focusing on Christmas will nurture her broken spirit. Opening day, she's mid-crisis when Adonis himself strides into her home and rescues her. Zane Ryder is on a self-imposed sabbatical from his life as a forensic engineer. He's tired of analyzing critical safety and equipment failures. He's yearning for something positive, like a full out Christmas in a quaint, small-town inn. He's taking time at Sweet Dreams to refuel his soul, enjoy the holiday, and to put the story burning in his mind onto paper. Love isn't on his agenda, until he rescues Clara from her watery disaster. Her strength and fragility touch his heart. Neither are looking for commitment, but Christmas is the time for love. Will they resist love's siren call or give in to their fears? Will Zane become Clara's Christmas prince and restore the music in her soul? Neither are looking for commitment, but Christmas is the time for love. Book Analyzing Christmas in Film

Download or read book Analyzing Christmas in Film written by Lauren Rosewarne and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2017-12-06 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Film plays a vital role in the celebration of Christmas. For decades, it has taught audiences about what the celebration of the season looks like – from the decorations to the costumes and to the expected snowy weather – as well as mirrors our own festivities back to us. Films like It’s a Wonderful Life and Home Alone have come to play key roles in real-life domestic celebrations: watching such titles has become, for many families, every bit as important as tree-trimming and leaving cookies out for Santa. These films have exported the American take on the holiday far and wide and helped us conjure an image of the perfect holiday. Rather than settling the ‘what is a Christmas film?’ debate – indeed, Die Hard and Lethal Weapon are discussed within – Analyzing Christmas in Film: Santa to the Supernatural focuses on the how Christmas is presented on the deluge of occasions when it appears. While most Christmas films are secular, religion makes many cameos, appearing through Nativity references, storylines involving spiritual rebirth, the framing of Santa as a Christ-like figure and the all-importance of family, be it the Holy family or just those gathered around the dining table. Also explored are popular narratives involving battles with stress and melancholy, single parents and Christmas martyrs, visits from ghosts and angels, big cities and small towns, break-ups and make-ups and the ticking clock of mortality. Nearly 1000 films are analyzed in this volume to determine what the portrayal of Christmas reveals about culture, society and faith as well as sex roles, consumerism, aesthetics and aspiration.

Book Public Inquiries Policy Learning and the Threat of Future Crises

Download or read book Public Inquiries Policy Learning and the Threat of Future Crises written by Alastair Stark and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-01 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of major crises governments turn to public inquiries to learn lessons. Inquiries often challenge established authority, frame heroes and villains in the public spotlight and deliver courtroom-like drama to hungry journalists. As such, they can become high-profile political stories in their own right. Inquiries also have a policy learning mandate with big implications because they are ultimately responsible for identifying policy lessons which, if implemented, should keep us safe from the next big event. However, despite their high-profile nature and their position as the pre-eminent means of learning about crises, we still know very little about what inquiries produce in terms of learning and what factors influence their effectiveness in this regard. In light of this, the question that animates this book is as important as it is simple. Can post-crisis inquiries deliver effective lesson-learning which will reduce our vulnerability to future threats? Conventional wisdom suggests that the answer to this question should be an emphatic no. Outside of the academy, for example, inquiries are regularly vilified as costly wastes of time that illuminate very little while inside social scientists echo similar concerns, regularly describing inquiries as unhelpful. These commentaries, however, lack robust, generalizable evidence to support their claims. This volume provides evidence from the first international comparison of post-crisis inquiries in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, which shows that, contrary to conventional wisdom, the post-crisis inquiry is an effective means of policy learning after crises and that they consistently encourage policy reforms that enhance our resilience to future threats.

Book excerpt: The #1 New York Times bestselling authors of The Heart of Everything That Is return with “a thorough, nuanced, and enthralling account” (The Wall Street Journal) about one of the most inspiring—and underappreciated—chapters in American history: the Continental Army’s six-month transformation in Valley Forge. In December 1777, some 12,000 members of America’s Continental Army stagger into a small Pennsylvania encampment near British-occupied Philadelphia. Their commander in chief, George Washington, is at the lowest ebb of his military career. Yet, somehow, Washington, with a dedicated coterie of advisers, sets out to breathe new life into his military force. Against all odds, they manage to turn a bobtail army of citizen soldiers into a professional fighting force that will change the world forever. Valley Forge is the story of how that metamorphosis occurred. Bestselling authors Bob Drury and Tom Clavin show us how this miracle was accomplished despite thousands of American soldiers succumbing to disease, starvation, and the elements. At the center of it all is George Washington as he fends off pernicious political conspiracies. The Valley Forge winter is his—and the revolution’s—last chance at redemption. And after six months in the camp, Washington fulfills his destiny, leading the Continental Army to a stunning victory in the Battle of Monmouth Court House. Valley Forge is the riveting true story of a nascent United States toppling an empire. Using new and rarely seen contemporaneous documents—and drawing on a cast of iconic characters and remarkable moments that capture the innovation and energy that led to the birth of our nation—Drury and Clavin provide a “gripping, panoramic account” (Publishers Weekly, starred review) of the definitive account of this seminal and previously undervalued moment in the battle for American independence.
