This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Constitutional History of the American People 1776-1850, Vol. 1 of 2 This work contains the evidence of changes and, it is believed, of progress - in the ideas and opinions which the American people have held respecting the principles, the organization, and the administration of their civil institutions. It is a record of the evolution of government in this country since the Revolution, and it rests upon authorities hitherto almost entirely disregarded. Constitutional history is the history of a constitu ency, which, consciously or unconsciously, is ever striving to promote its own welfare. A constitu tional history deals primarily with persons, not with documents. Laws and constitutions, written or unwritten, are the evidence of the efforts of a constituency to secure its ends. The develop ment of constitutional government consists, essen tially, in the definite limitation of authority, in order to accomplish purposes either implied or specified. These purposes are constant demands upon the constituency, but the means adjudged reasonable or necessary for securing them are as constantly changing. The process is from things to persons; it is progressive because it is dynamic. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Constitutional History of the American People 1776-1850, Vol. 2 of 2 Just as the half-century was closing, the people of Kentucky made a new constitution. The convention, consisting of a hundred delegates, assembled at Frankfort on theist of October. Of these, the majority were natives of the State, and all but three of slave-holding States. The difference, in many respects the most important, between the democracy in a Northern and that in a Southern State was illustrated in the record the delegates gave of their places of nativity. Book Sources in American Constitutional History

Download or read book Sources in American Constitutional History written by Michael Les Benedict and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the second revised and expanded edition of this invaluable reader, Michael Les Benedict draws together the important documents that have shaped and been shaped by the American Constitution from medieval times through the present day. It includes not only the most important Supreme Court decisions, but also key American declarations, resolutions, laws, and platforms. All these documents represent, in a sense, the formal expression of the American people's ongoing contract with each other. The documents in the reader are organized into chapters corresponding to those in the third edition of The Blessings of Liberty: A Concise History of the Constitution of the United States. However, since they reflect the generally accepted canon of American constitutional history, they may supplement any textbook or other readings. The brief introductory headnotes provide information about the social, political, and intellectual context in which each document first appeared.

Book Liberty and Union

Download or read book Liberty and Union written by Edgar J. McManus and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-04 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This, the first of two volumes of Liberty and Union, is a comprehensive constitutional history of the United States from the Anglo-American origins of the Constitution through the colonial and antebellum periods, to the Civil War and the consequent restructuring of the nation. Written in a clear and engaging narrative style, it successfully unites thorough chronological coverage with a thematic approach, offering critical analysis of core constitutional history topics, set in the political, social, and economic context that made them constitutional issues in the first place. Combining a thoughtful and balanced narrative with an authoritative stance on key issues, the authors explain the past in the light of the past, without imposing upon it the standards of later generations. Authored by two experienced professors of History and Law this textbook has been thoughtfully constructed to offer an accessible alternative to dense scholarly works – avoiding unnecessary technical jargon, defining legal terms and historical personalities where appropriate, and making explicit connections between constitutional themes and historical events. For students in an undergraduate or postgraduate constitutional history course, or anyone with a general interest in constitutional developments, this book will be essential reading. Useful features include: Full glossary of legal terminology Recommended reading A table of cases Extensive supporting artwork Companion website Useful documents provided: Declaration of Independence Articles of Confederation Constitution of the United States of America Chronological list of Supreme Court justices

Book A Short Constitutional History of the United States

Download or read book A Short Constitutional History of the United States written by Francis Newton Thorpe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short Constitutional History of the United States The basis of this book is the material consulted in the preparation of the author's larger works, - "A Constitutional History of the American People, 1776- 1850," and "The Constitutional History of the United States, 1765-1895," - the former a narrative of the civil development of the states; the latter, of the federal union. The present volume narrates the constitutional history both of the Union and of the states, showing the common basis of American local and general government. In a book of small compass, adapted to those who desire the essentials of our civil development, it has seemed sufficient if there were related, (1) the origin of our civil system; (2) the principles on which it is founded; (3) the adaptation of the plan of government to public needs, by amendment and construction; and, (4) the interpretation of the principles of the government by the supreme tribunal, - the courts. The chapters on the state constitutions treat of a subject too much neglected. A study of the subject quickly reveals its importance.
