Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Conclusive Peace, Presenting the Historically Logical, and a Feasible, Plan of Action for the Coming Peace Conference, Which Will Co-Ordinate and Harmonize Europe and the World What is the answer? The only adequate answer is that the existing system is wrong. In such a crisis these officials should get together, in the same room. Then there would be no delayed dispatches, no undelivered dispatches, no misdated dispatches, no unreported dispatches, etc., and no misunderstanding. There in that one room, open to the world, open to the press of the world, with the fierce, critical light of civilization playing on that group, with every secret brought out into the light and every pertinent fact laid bare, responsibilities would be placed squarely where they belong, with no possibility of shifting. From such a council, a European war could not have resulted. If such a getting together would avert danger in a crisis, then a regular getting together at stated intervals, in the general interest, would prevent the development of crises. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens when the international community simultaneously pursues peace and justice in response to ongoing conflicts? What are the effects of interventions by the International Criminal Court (ICC) on the wars in which the institution intervenes? Is holding perpetrators of mass atrocities accountable a help or hindrance to conflict resolution? This book offers an in-depth examination of the effects of interventions by the ICC on peace, justice and conflict processes. The 'peace versus justice' debate, wherein it is argued that the ICC has either positive or negative effects on 'peace', has spawned in response to the Court's propensity to intervene in conflicts as they still rage. This book is a response to, and a critical engagement with, this debate. Building on theoretical and analytical insights from the fields of conflict and peace studies, conflict resolution, and negotiation theory, the book develops a novel analytical framework to study the Court's effects on peace, justice, and conflict processes. This framework is applied to two cases: Libya and northern Uganda. Drawing on extensive fieldwork, the core of the book examines the empirical effects of the ICC on each case. The book also examines why the ICC has the effects that it does, delineating the relationship between the interests of states that refer situations to the Court and the ICC's institutional interests, arguing that the negotiation of these interests determines which side of a conflict the ICC targets and thus its effects on peace, justice, and conflict processes. While the effects of the ICC's interventions are ultimately and inevitably mixed, the book makes a unique contribution to the empirical record on ICC interventions and presents a novel and sophisticated means of studying, analyzing, and understanding the effects of the Court's interventions in Libya, northern Uganda - and beyond.

Book excerpt: Johan Galtung, one of the founders of modern peace studies, provides a wide-ranging panorama of the ideas, theories and assumptions on which the study of peace is based. The book is organized in four parts, each examining the one of the four major theoretical approaches to peace. The first part covers peace theory, exploring the epistemological assumptions of peace. In Part Two conflict theory is examined with an exploration of nonviolent and creative handling of conflict. Developmental theory is discussed in Part Three, exploring structural violence, particularly in the economic field, together with a consideration of the ways of overcoming that violence. The fourth part is devoted to civilization theory. This involves an

Book A Conclusive Argument in Favour of Islam

Download or read book A Conclusive Argument in Favour of Islam written by Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad and published by Islam International Publications Ltd. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mere claims do not prove that a certain religion is true. The distinct hallmark of a true and living religion is that it establishes the existence of God in every age and with undeniable evidence. In this work, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian, the Promised Messiah and Mahdi, explains that Islam is a living religion that is not based on tales of the past, but possesses the power to endow its followers the ability to manifest miracles and signs even today. A tree is recognised by its fruit he states, and the fruits of Islam can be tasted by all even today. The author takes up the challenge of Dr Henry Martyn Clark to engage in a debate that he said would once and for all settle the differences between Christianity and Islam, and determine the superiority of one over the other – a debate dubbed ‘The Holy War’ by Dr Clark. The author presents copies of correspondence between Dr Clark and himself, as well as letters to and from the Muslims of Jandiala, who were to be represented in this debate. It also contains the conditions settled for the aforementioned debate and proclaims a prophecy regarding Muhammad Husain of Batala.
