Book excerpt: This Summarized version of Sahih Al-Bukhâri is an English translation of the compilation entitled "At-Tajrid As-Sarih" by Imam Zain-ud-Deen Ahmad bin 'Abdul-Lateef Az-Zubaidi. The original compilation (in nine volumes) contains more than 7500 Ahadith with repetitions and duplicates. The summarized version (in one volume) is about one quarter the size of the original and contains 2230 Ahadith without repetitions. Also, most of the duplicate Ahadith from different chains (with slight variations) have been removed and only one has been kept. Furthermore, most of the sub-narrators are often omitted when possible and sometimes only the first narrator in each chain is kept. NOTE: The numbering style has been altered slightly to includes both the Summarized and Original versions. So the Hadith numbering of the Summarized version from numbers 1 to 2230 is shown in squared brackets, while the reference to the Original version is shown directly after it by depicting the Volume number it is found in, the Book title of that Volume, and the Hadith number of that specific Book. For example: In the Book of "Fasting (Saum)", you will find the first narration beginning with "[919] Volume 3, Book 31, Hadith 118: Narrated.... etc." This makes an excellent read for the average Muslim who would like to increase their knowledge and get to know more about the authentic narrations of our beloved Prophet Muhammad, may peace and blessings of Allâh be upon him. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume is a collection of excerpts from al-Ṭabarī's biographical work entitled The Supplement to the Supplemented (Dhayl al-mudhayyal). In the introduction to his History, al-Ṭabarī declared his intention to append to it a biographical work for the reader's convenience. Only a collection of excerpts has survived, however. It was first published as part of the Leiden edition of the History and is now presented as a volume in the Ṭabarī Translation Project. It brings together biographies of Companions, successors, and scholars of subsequent generations; many chapters are devoted to women related to the Prophet who played a role in the transmission of knowledge. The biographies vary in length and style, ranging from a mere identification of a person to long accounts and anecdotes. This volume represents a long tradition characteristic of Muslim culture. Muslim scholars developed biographical literature into a rich and complex genre. It was intended to be an auxiliary branch of religious study, aimed at determining the reliability of chains of transmission through which traditions were handed down. More often than not, however, works in this genre contain valuable historical information of the kind often ignored by the authors of mainstream history books. Even though not a complete work, this volume is thus not merely a supplement to al-Ṭabarī's History but also a source in its own right, often supplying new and rare insights into events and social conditions.
