Book A Computer Control Algorithm for a Nuclear Reactor Support System

Download or read book A Computer Control Algorithm for a Nuclear Reactor Support System written by John Roger Kosorok and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The High Temperature Lattice Test Reactor (HTLTR) at Richland, Washington, operates at temperatures up to 1000°C. Its low nuclear power requires a 384 kilowatt electrical heating system, that is divided into four circuits, to attain the high temperatures in the ten-foot cube of moderating graphite. This thesis describes the design and evaluation of an algorithm for digital computer control of the heating system. Design specifications for the algorithm were: (1) limited computer memory was available; (2) the ranges for the manipulated variables were limited and were different; (3) the temperature differences throughout the reactor were to be small; (4) the response was to be non-oscillatory; (5) there should be a small steady-state error; and (6) it was necessary to compensate for nonlinearities, The distributed nature of the heating system, its multitude of inputs and outputs, and its non-linearity over the operating range formed a process that was extremely difficult to describe without directly measuring the transfer function. Since the completion of the control program had to coincide with the completion of the reactor, the design of the algorithm could not wait until direct measurements on the system were made. A preliminary analysis of the reactor heating system showed that the design specifications could be met by using a discrete approximation to a continuous proportional-plus-integral controller as the framework around which to design the algorithm. The extensive logic and calculation power of the digital control computer provided the means to extend the basic form of the algorithm to meet the design specifications. A hybrid computer simulation of the heating system was designed for verifying the algorithm and for refining it to compensate for the interactions between circuits of the heating system. Important features of the simulation were: a program to optimize the control parameters by a "hill-climbing" method; and an operating program that allowed extensive changes in the digital portion of the simulation program while it was running. After the reactor was constructed, transfer functions for the heating system were obtained by step function tests to complete the hybrid simulation. In addition to amplitude scaling, time scaling by a factor of 3000 was necessary to obtain reasonable problem solution times for the control system. Extensive tests with the simulation showed that the first five design specifications were met, and that the system was stable. Extensive testing with the real system, which may take months to complete, is required to verify that the sixth specification will be met. However operating experience has shown that the feature of the algorithm to meet this specification will be necessary. General conclusions, that became obvious during the research on this thesis problem, were: simulation should be considered as a primary tool for the practical solution of complex design problems; and more development effort will be required to make advanced control concepts applicable to practical problems.

Book Autonomous Nuclear Power Plants with Artificial Intelligence

Download or read book Autonomous Nuclear Power Plants with Artificial Intelligence written by Jonghyun Kim and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-02-20 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces novel approaches and practical examples of autonomous nuclear power plants that minimize operator intervention. Autonomous nuclear power plants with artificial intelligence presents a framework to enable nuclear power plants to autonomously operate and introduces artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to implement its functions. Although nuclear power plants are already highly automated to reduce human errors and guarantee the reliability of system operations, the term “autonomous” is still not popular because AI techniques are regarded as less proven technologies. However, the use of AI techniques and the autonomous operation seems unavoidable because of their great advantages, especially, in advanced reactors and small modular reactors. The book includes the following topics: Monitoring, diagnosis, and prediction. Intelligent control. Operator support systems. Operator-autonomous system interaction. Integration into the autonomous operation system. This book will provides useful information for researchers and students who are interested in applying AI techniques in the fields of nuclear as well as other industries. This book covers broad practical applications of AI techniques from the classical fault diagnosis to more recent autonomous control. In addition, specific techniques and modelling examples are expected to be very informative to the beginners in the AI studies.

Book New Optimization Techniques in Engineering

Download or read book New Optimization Techniques in Engineering written by Godfrey C. Onwubolu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presently, general-purpose optimization techniques such as Simulated Annealing, and Genetic Algorithms, have become standard optimization techniques. Concerted research efforts have been made recently in order to invent novel optimization techniques for solving real life problems, which have the attributes of memory update and population-based search solutions. The book describes a variety of these novel optimization techniques which in most cases outperform the standard optimization techniques in many application areas. New Optimization Techniques in Engineering reports applications and results of the novel optimization techniques considering a multitude of practical problems in the different engineering disciplines – presenting both the background of the subject area and the techniques for solving the problems.

Book Safety of Computer Control Systems

Download or read book Safety of Computer Control Systems written by R. Lauber and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-19 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Safety of Computer Control Systems is a collection of papers from the Proceedings of the IFAC Workshop, held in Stuttgart, Germany on May 16-18, 1979. This book discusses the inherent problems in the hardware and software application of computerized control to automated systems safeguarding human life, property, and the environment. The papers discuss more specific concerns, such as railway systems, aircraft landing systems, nuclear power stations, chemical reactors, elevators, and cranes. The book also describes the safety and reliability of complex industrial computer systems together with an example showing the application of computers in power plants. One paper presents guidelines in documenting safety related computer systems that will help various parties who are involved in their purchase and operation. Another paper discusses how to detect failures in microcomputer systems such as memory violations and invalid operation code detectors. This book then concludes by discussing the necessity of inspecting process computers used in nuclear power plants, especially when computers are used in reactor protection, control rod, and authentication of log-in systems. This collection can be of interest for students of programming, process-computer analysts, heads of computer technology departments and institutions, and lecturers in industrial computer programming and design.
