Download or read book Jaina Scriptures and Philosophy written by Peter Flügel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-19 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in Indian religion and comparative philosophy has increased in recent years, but despite this the study of Jaina philosophy is still in its infancy. This book looks at the role of philosophy in Jaina tradition, and its significance within the general developments in Indian philosophy. Bringing together chapters by philologists, historians and philosophers, the book focuses on karman theory, the theory of conditional predication, epistemology and the debates of Jaina philosophers with representatives of competing traditions, such as Ājīvika, Buddhist and Hindu. It analyses the relationship between religion and philosophy in Jaina scriptures, both Digambara and Śvetāmbara, and will be of interest to scholars and students of South Asian Religion, Philosophy, and Philology.
Download or read book Paesi kah aya Sanskrit written by Willem B. Bollée and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2002 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the materialist prince Paesi is the only larger legend common to Jain and Buddhist (Payasi in the Digha-nikaya) canonical literature and a rare sample of a lively dialogue. Its subject, the corporeality of the soul, is denied by the Jains. In contrast the Buddhists consider the "I" a facon de parler for practical reasons. Modern brain research tends in favour of the Buddhist view of the ego as being impermanent and therefore an illusion created by the brain. The problem in this dialogue of Paesi with a Jain monk, which is set in the axial age of reflexion on and discussion of the soul (6th century BCE), but in its present literary form dates some centuries later, has therefore in two millennia not lost its actuality. Differently from the Buddhist version the story of Paesi ends tragically; after his conversion the prince is murdered by his wife. The single arguments in the discussion show many ancient Indian realia (birth ritual, diseases, etiquette, ethnic list of female servants, execution of thieves, regicide, 72 professions, similes etc.) which have been commented upon in the notes.

Book excerpt: Bhagavan Parsvanatha is the 23rd Tirthankara of the Jains. There are several hagiographies composed on his life. One of the earliest works, composed in the 9th century, as part of the larger Mahapurana which is a hagiography of all 24 Jinas, was composed by Acarya Gunabhadra who was a disciple of Acarya Jinasena. Lord Parsvanatha is an object of intense devotion to Jains of all sects and is iconographically recognisable by a canopy of cobra hoods. In 170 succinct Sanskrit verses, Gunabhadra gives us a beautiful account of the life of Jina Parsvanatha. Each Sanskrit verse is written in roman, followed by an exact English translation. There are several, highly informative footnotes which reflect the tremendous scholarship of Prof. Dr. Willem Bollée. Prof. Bollée presents his edition as an opening contribution to a proposed wideranging investigation into hagiographies of Bhagavan Parsvanatha. This book has been beautifully produced to a high standard by Hindi Grath Karyalay and has been included in a series to honour the founder of the firm, the celebrated Jain scholar Pandit Nathuram Premi.

Download or read book History of Kr i stra written by Gyula Wojtilla and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2006 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The practice and theory of agriculture occupies a special branch of sciences called krishishastra literature 'agricultural science' in the traditional Indian taxonomy of sciences. This knowledge is deposited in the krishishastras literature 'textbooks of agriculture', in didactic poetry or single chapters or passages of literary works of different genres and in various collections of popular sayings. These texts together are rich mines of information on the methods of weather forecast, the main events of the agricultural year comprising agricultural operations, events of village life and certain religious beliefs. Gyula Wojtilla in the first part of his book defines the various meanings of the term krishishastra and assigns its role among traditional sciences in India. It is followed by the major part of the book containing the detailed description of individual works on traditional agriculture written mainly in Sanskrit but also in Prakrit and in vernaculars such as Bengali, Bihari, Gujarati, Hindi, Kanarese, Malayalam, Maithili, Marathi, Rajasthani, Tamil and Telugu. At the end of the book there are four appendices comprising texts containing independent chapters) on the subject, collections of sayings others than ascribed to authors and miscellaneus issues. The book as such can be regarded as an literary encyclopaedia of traditional Indian agriculture and may serve as an indispensable tool of research for students of classical Indology, history of science and culture or the peasant society in India.
