Book excerpt: Christian Gnaegi and his wife, Elizabeth, emigrated from Switzerland and settled in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, between 1750 and 1760. They were the parents of ten children. Christian and Elizabeth moved to land near Scio, Harrison County, Ohio, in 1807. He died there in 1812. Descendants listed, chiefly descendants of his son, Johannes Gnaegi (d. 1845) of Somerset County, Pennsylvania, lived in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Illinois, and elsewhere. Most descendants spelled their surname "Gnagey.".

Mary died at sea aboard the ship enroute to Pennsylvania. Johanes Gnäge settled in what is now Bethel Twp., Lebanon Co., Pennsylvania with his sons, Christian and John. His second wife was Magdalena Yoder or Swatka (b. 1744), with whom he had eight children. This family was Swiss Amish or Mennonites. Descendants live in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and elsewhere. John Kenege Sr., born Johanes Gnäge, Jr. in 1742, was the second son of Johanes Gnäge and Mary Holden.

This occurs because the ir regularly numbered ones were not reported to this office until the numbers were assigned, and then unassigned numbers were given them, as occasion seemed to require. While it may seem strange that such differences appear, it is really immaterial, as the references always show to what family each belongs. It has recentlv been decided to add an index to the Record, to show the number and name of each descendant in alphabetical order so that the record of each may be readily found; by referring to any person's number, the name and number of one or both parents will be seen from which can readily be traced any connections, either in the ascending or descending line by references from one family to another. This index is a valuable and important addition, and will appear at the end of the Record in each volume. It required much time and labor to accurately complete it, but it is a very desirable feature, and adds much to the value of the Record.
