Book Quantitative Bacteriology

Download or read book Quantitative Bacteriology written by John P. Heggers and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1990-12-19 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students, residents, researchers, and surgeons will discover that this book is a compendium of knowledge regarding quantitative bacteriology. Beginning with the concept of the equilibrium between bacteria and the factors of host resistance as recognized historically, this book finishes with discussions regarding the practicality of tissue bacterial quantification in 1990. Various techniques for quantifying bacteria in tissue are discussed and critically evaluated. The role for qualitative species identification is emphasized. Specialists will find the place for quantitative bacteriology in general wound healing, general surgery, orthopedics, plastic surgery, thoracic surgery, and the management of burns. Also included is a section on statistics and validity of tissue sampling to help develop confidence levels. All of the chapters are interwoven to allow readers to determine the role of quantitative bacteriology in the armamentarium of a surgeon.

Book Compendium of the Microbiological Spoilage of Foods and Beverages

Download or read book Compendium of the Microbiological Spoilage of Foods and Beverages written by Michael P. Doyle and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-09-23 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increased emphasis on food safety during the past two decades has decreased the emphasis on the loss of food through spoilage, particularly in developed co- tries where food is more abundant. In these countries spoilage is a commercial issue that affects the pro?t or loss of producers and manufacturers. In lesser developed countries spoilage continues to be a major concern. The amount of food lost to spoilage is not known. As will be evident in this text, stability and the type of spoilage are in?uenced by the inherent properties of the food and many other factors. During the Second World War a major effort was given to developing the te- nologies needed to ship foods to different regions of the world without spoilage. The food was essential to the military and to populations in countries that could not provide for themselves. Since then, progress has been made in improved product formulations, processing, packaging, and distribution systems. New products have continued to evolve, but for many new perishable foods product stability continues to be a limiting factor. Many new products have failed to reach the marketplace because of spoilage issues.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Compend: On Bacteriology Including Animal Parasites This little book was designed by the writer to serve the needs of the medical student preparing for examination, and for the practitioner of medicine who desires to acquaint himself with the principle facts of the rapidly growing science of bacteriology. An effort has been made to reduce the subject matter to as concrete a form as possible. While the literature of the subject of immunity is as vast almost as the rest of bacteriology, yet it is hoped that the chapter in this book on immunity gives in outline the essential accepted teachings on the subject. Minute details of cultures and technic are not given. They must be sought for in books on descriptive bacteriology.
