Book The Structure and Measurement of Intelligence

Download or read book The Structure and Measurement of Intelligence written by Hans Eysenck and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is meant by the term "intelligence" and, once de- fined, how do we go about achieving a valid measurement of this faculty? This classic textbook, originally published in 1979, and now reissued with a new preface by Sybil Eysenck, incorporates a broad range of findings and reanalyzes much of the existing literature in this area. In The Structure and Measurement of Intelligence, Hans Eysenck draws on methods for determining the effect of genetics and environment on the development of intelligence and examines the validity of the term as defined in relation to internal as well as external criteria. He tests a number of hypotheses on intelligence against empirical research findings and considers various criticisms in detail. The significance of intelligence and its measurement in society are explored in depth. Eysenck greatly expands upon such questions as: Does IQ measure intelligence? How valid is the nature versus nurture argument? and, How might socioeconomic status influence one's intelligence? Designed primarily for students and scholars in psychology and education, this text will make thought-provoking reading for all concerned with the development and measurement of intelligence in the individual.

Book Intelligence and Intelligence Testing

Download or read book Intelligence and Intelligence Testing written by Richard B Fletcher and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-03-11 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered what IQ is and how it is measured? Why is there such a premium placed on high IQ? What do we mean by intelligence? What does your IQ score mean? There can be no denying the enduring appeal of IQ over the last century. It is probably one of the most misunderstood yet highly researched psychological constructs ever. Such has been the controversy surrounding this topic that it is difficult to distinguish fact from fiction. Intelligence and Intelligence Testing is a text that aims to address that. This book examines the controversial psychological construct that is IQ, discussing and reviewing the history and current status of the research on intelligence and providing an overview of its development, measurement and use. From Galton, Spearman and Binet to the relatively recent controversy caused by the research of Herrnstein and Murray, this important book makes a major claim about the importance today of ‘problem solving on demand’ as one of the key components of today’s notions of intelligence. Chapters include coverage of: Intelligence and schooling; Cultural differences in views of intelligence; The history of IQ testing and its emergence into public consciousness; IQ as predictor of educational and occupational outcomes; Psychometrics and measurement of intelligence; The future of intelligence research. Written by Richard B. Fletcher and John Hattie, the author of the highly-regarded Visible Learning, this textbook will be invaluable for all undergraduate and Masters level students studying the theory of intelligence and the impact of testing on educational. Detailed and annotated further reading lists and a glossary of terms are also included.

Book The Measurement of Adult Intelligence

Download or read book The Measurement of Adult Intelligence written by David Wechsler and published by Baltimore : The Williams & Wilkins Company. This book was released on 1944 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In preparing this third, "war" edition of the Measurement of Adult Intelligence my primary aim has been to increase the book's usefulness to those engaged in the field of applied psychometrics. I have borne in mind particularly the military applications of the Wechsler-Bellevue Scale, as it is now being used by some of the armed services of our own country as well as of Great Britain. Accordingly, most of the changes made will be found in the chapters dealing with Clinical applications and the Problem of mental deterioration. These chapters have been somewhat extended and in part rewritten. The table of 'signs' for different clinical entities has been completely revised and a new quantitative method for determining mental deterioration elaborated. Both of these presentations should be of value not only in the field of neuropsychiatric diagnosis but also in questions connected with rehabilitation. In addition to the above, some changes have been made in the scoring of certain subtests of the Scale. The effect of these changes will be to increase the I.Q. range at the upper end of the Scale, without however altering significantly the norms for the population as a whole. In the case of one or two tests (noticeably, the Arithmetic) the change has necessitated slight alteration in the scoring of some of the subtest items. Little alteration has otherwise been made in the substance of the text. One table and two figures which were not particularly useful have been omitted and two new tables which should be of immediate and practical value added. Also added is a bibliography of most of the important studies with the Wechsler-Bellevue Scale, published up to March 1944"--Preface. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved).

The volume focusses on theoretical innovation and recent advances in the measurement, modelling, and characterization of the neurobiology of intelligence differences, especially from brain imaging studies. It summarizes fundamental issues in the characterization and measurement of general intelligence, and surveys multidisciplinary research consortia and large-scale data repositories for the study of general intelligence. A systematic review of neuroimaging methods for studying intelligence is provided, including structural and diffusion-weighted MRI techniques, functional MRI methods, and spectroscopic imaging of metabolic markers of intelligence.
