Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the perceptions and opinions of teachers regarding the effective leadership practices of elementary school administrators. A survey was prepared consisting of 10 statements on school leadership. One hundred elementary school teachers were asked to select a response using a 4-point Likert-type scale that indicated their level of agreement or disagreement with each statement. There were 63 surveys completed and analyzed for this study. The results of a chi-square analysis showed that teachers either agree or strongly agree that elementary school administrators challenge teachers to improve teaching and provide support; create team building activities for the staff; use staff meetings for teacher collaboration; work with teachers to create a school vision; lead professional development; check lesson plans for alignment to objectives; mentor new and low-performing teachers; conduct walk-throughs; and maintain visibility, accessibility, and approachability.

Few ideas, it seems, have provoked as much attention, debate and c- troversy. Whatever your position on distributed leadership, and you cannot fail to have one, it is irrefutable that distributed leadership has become the leadership idea of the moment. Yet, it is an idea that can be traced back as far as the mid 20s and possibly earlier. So why the interest? Part of the answer can be found in a move away from theorizing and empirical enquiry focused on the single leader. This shift has undoubtedly been fuelled by structural changes, within schools and across school systems that have resulted in - ternative models or forms of leadership practice. Evidence highlights how those - cupying formal leadership positions are increasingly recognizing the limitations of existing structural arrangements to secure organizational growth and transformation (Fullan et al. , 2007; Harris et al. , 2008; Chapman et al. , 2008). As a consequence, many heads and principals are actively restructuring, realigning and redesigning leadership practice in their school (Harris, 2008). While the terminology to describe such changes varies, the core principle is one of extending or sharing leadership practice. While scholars have long argued for the need to move beyond those at the top of organizations in order to examine leadership (Barnard, 1968; Katz and Kahn, 1966) until relatively recently, much of the school leadership literature has tended tofocusupontheheadortheprincipal.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative, survey study was to investigate the relationship between the leadership practices of principals and teacher perceptions of schools as professional learning communities. Twelve principals and 203 teachers at 12 selected schools in a small, rural Louisiana school district participated in the study. Data were collected on principal leadership practices as measured by the Leadership Practice Inventory and teacher perceptions of schools as professional learning communities as measured by the Professional Learning Community Assessment- Revised (PLCA-R) online survey. Correlational analysis revealed the principal self-rated LPI scores were significantly correlated only with the dimension of supported conditions- structures (SCS) from the PLCA-R. The correlation was negative, suggesting that perceptions of SCS were reduced as the principals rated themselves higher on LPI dimensions. Teacher observed leadership scores were significantly, positively correlated with the dimension of supported conditions- relationships (SCR) from PLCA-R. A nonparametric, Kruskal-Wallis test was used to analyze the potential differences among the 12 schools in their professional learning communities. There were significant differences among the schools in all six dimensions of professional learning communities. Collective learning and application and shared personal practices appeared to be more challenging to the schools. This study may provide a greater understanding of how leadership practices affect educational accountability, collaboration, sustainability, and teacher leadership.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine secondary or high school teachers' and administrators' perception of teacher leadership within the PLC model. The study included a review of data collected from the Professional Learning Communities Assessment-Revised (PLCA-R) from a purposeful sample of high school teachers and administrators from a large suburban school district in southeast Texas. A purposeful sample of high school teachers, teacher leaders, administrators, and the Director of Professional Growth were interviewed in an attempt to provide a more in-depth understanding of their perceptions of teacher leadership within the PLC model. Quantitative data were analyzed using frequencies and percentages, while an inductive coding process was used to analyze the collected qualitative data. Quantitative data analyzed the five dimensions of PLCs varied based on the campuses of the teachers and administrators. Qualitative analysis reinforced quantitative data gathered while bringing additional clarity to teachers, teacher leaders, administrators and the Director of Professional Growth perceptions of teacher leadership in PLCs. Quantitative analysis revealed that there is evidence of the implementation model of PLCs in the district, however there is some inconsistency in the shared and supportive leadership domain. The qualitative analysis supported the inconsistency in shared and supportive leadership evidence in the teacher leaders role in PLCs from the perspectives of the teachers', teacher leaders', administrators' and the Director of Professional Growth.

Book excerpt: Effective principal leadership practices improve school organization, teaching, and student achievement outcomes. These practices include framing and communicating a school's goals and mission, creating shared expectations of high performance, clarifying roles and objectives, and promoting professional development. However, research demonstrates that teachers tend to rate principals lower on important leadership practices than principals rate themselves, and this mismatch in perception could have negative consequences. Numerous studies in the fields of human resources and organizational management reveal that leader self-awareness-when leader self-perception is in agreement with what subordinates perceive-is directly related to leadership effectiveness. The degree to which leaders rate themselves more highly than do subordinates correlates with diminished organizational outcomes, including reduced subordinate job satisfaction and productivity. Specific to education, negative teacher perception of school leadership correlates with teacher burnout and reduced teacher collaboration. We used data from the RAND Corporation's web-based American Educator Panels to gather nationally representative evidence of whether perceptions of school leadership practices vary by educator position. We find that principals almost universally rate themselves as effective, but a minority of teachers disagree.
