Book excerpt: At the Fundy National Park golf course, fungicides containing mercury were applied to greens between 1949 and 1983, and mercury contamination still persists on the course. This report summarizes three 1995 studies to provide an assessment of that contamination. An Environment Canada study documented potential environmental contamination from the use of mercury-based fungicides on golf course greens in Atlantic Canada. Another study by GEMTEC provided a more detailed valuation of the magnitude and distribution of mercury contamination at the Fundy National Park course by analyzing samples of soil, water, grass, and sediment. The third study involved a human health risk assessment using data from the GEMTEC study and results from air samples collected on a hot summer day. Methodology employed included hazard identification, toxicity assessment, and risk characterization.
