Capitalism is roaring but somehow at the same time doesn't exist. The economy is booming in virtually all areas. The military is growing more powerful each year, many industries are at world level, and China is taking more and more steps to join the international community while being sure as she doesn't snuggle up too closely. Still, with a population of 1.3 billion and staggering poverty in the rural areas making up the vast part of the country, the face of China remains centuries old. Where she goes, nobody knows. Book FDI and Development in Vietnam

Download or read book FDI and Development in Vietnam written by Hoang Mai Pham and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 2004 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Vietnam's economy moves further along the path of development, this book presents urgent lessons for policymakers from the country's first decade of experience of FDI. A mere decade after the start of its reforms towards a market-oriented economy, a World Bank report named Vietnam the second largest recipient of foreign direct investment (FDI). Drawing on a wealth of hitherto unpublished data and qualitative analysis, this work critically examines the overall impact of FDI on Vietnams economy, as well as the performance of individual projects. A major finding is that government policy and intervention have been important in channelling foreign investment flows towards national and regional development goals. This book is also a significant addition to the debates on FDI-induced effects such as technology transfer and employment creation in developing countries. It will be of great interest to all those researching or involved in policymaking in transitional economies in particular.

Book Comparative Studies on Regional and National Economic Development

Download or read book Comparative Studies on Regional and National Economic Development written by Hui Zhang and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-05-11 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to quantify the role of the world's major economies in the international division from the perspective of global value chains and clarify the value cycle system between China and developed and developing economies. This book establishes a theoretical paradigm that conforms to the current world economic structure. That is, the world economic structure gradually shifts from a single-cycle model centered on developed countries to a more complex dual-circulation model. Furthermore, based on the analysis of the current world economic situation, it also analyzes the interaction between trade and investment and the synergistic effect of the Corridors under the Belt and Road Initiative. The first part of the book brings a better understanding of mutual relationships between trade and investment under the Belt and Road Initiative and broadens the research fields of relevant studies. Additionally, comprehensive and specific country research is particularly conducted in this book. By analyzing the economic indicators, reviewing social history and social-economic development, covering various countries along the Belt and Road, it provides deep exploration of the fields and approaches of the most potential cooperation under the purpose of "Peace, Development, Cooperation and Win-Win." Therefore, this part draws a broad map of economic and cultures in order to provide a reference and assistance for promoting the Belt and Road Initiative. Fulfilling this vision, this book hopes to deepen the understanding of economic development of each relevant economy to encourage the participation of economies in regional connectivity.

Book The Transnational Activities of Small and Medium Sized Enterprises

Download or read book The Transnational Activities of Small and Medium Sized Enterprises written by Masataka Fujita and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: measure of the rate of innovation --research-and-development (R&D) expenditure per employee compared to new patents received per employee -- does not adequately capture a unique feature of SMEs, namely that owners and managers are often themselves innovators. For example, in Japan 52 per cent of SMEs' innovations reported in 1986 were created by employers, whereas in large firms 72 per cent of innovations were created by research technicians. Nevertheless, patchy evidence from Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States indicates that SMEs at least hold their own in terms of innovation compared to large firms. Perhaps most significantly, a recent study indicates that, while the total number of innovations is positively related to R&D expenditures, skilled labour and the degree to which large firms comprise the industry, in innovative industries innovative activity tends to emanate more from SMEs than large firms. This is probably because in industries where large firms dominate, SMEs need to be innovative to survive. There is much information to suggest that in technologies such as micro-electronics, new materials and biotechnology SMEs tend to be in the vanguard of innovation. Small and medium-sized enterprises as exporters. The contribution of SMEs to a national economy from exporting is generally small; for example, in Japan SMEs accounted for only 13 per cent of merchandise exports in 1990.

Book The Role of Foreign Direct Investment in East Asian Economic Development

Download or read book The Role of Foreign Direct Investment in East Asian Economic Development written by Takatoshi Ito and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The international flow of long-term private capital has increased dramatically in the 1990s. In fact, many policymakers now consider private foreign capital to be an essential resource for the acceleration of economic growth. This volume focuses attention on the microeconomic determinants and effects of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the East Asian region, allowing researchers to explore the overall structure of FDI, to offer case studies of individual countries, and to consider their insights, both general and particular, within the context of current economic theory.

Book FDI Regionalism Government Policy and Endogenous Growth

Download or read book FDI Regionalism Government Policy and Endogenous Growth written by Anthony Bende-Nabende and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-20 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1999, this text investigates whether FDI caused spill over effects which have led to the economic growth of the ASEAN-5 economies, and if that it so, whether the ASEAN Preferential Trade Agreement (APTA) had a significant effect in attracting FDI to the region. It takes into account the different levels of economic development of the countries under analysis. The results from the structural (static) model suggest that FDI has stimulated economic growth through the human factors followed by technology transfer, international trade, and learning by doing, and that the formation of APTA had a lagged influence on FDI inflows into the advantage of the more developed member countries and the disadvantage of the less developed countries. Those from the multiplier (dynamic) effects analysis demonstrate that whereas the impact is immediate in the more developed, politically stable and foreign investment friendly economies, there is a time lag in those economies which are less developed and more hostile to FDI. The analysis presents an empirical comparison of how the level of economic development affects the interaction of FDI, regionalism and economic growth.
