Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commentary: With Introduction and Appendix on the Hellenica of Xenophon The success oi his edition of the first and second books of Xenophon's Hellem'ca, published in 1888, has encouraged the editor to revise and continue his work on the same lines, but on a slightly larger scale, so as to embrace the whole of the seven books. It was his original intention to prepare a revised text, and with that end in view he had already amassed considerable material - drawn more especially from a hitherto un collated Palatine ms. Of the Hellem'ca which it was his good fortune to discover, along with two others of inferior merit, in the Vatican Library. Finding, how ever, that the Delegates of the University Press had entrusted the task of revising the text of the whole of Xenophon's writings to Mr. E. C. Marchant, he most willingly abandoned this portion of the work, and has contented himself with collecting together in a short appendix such readings and conjectures - very few in number - as for some reason or other he has preferred to those admitted by Mr. Marchant into his own text. The volume is more concerned with examining violence in practice rather than the theory of violence, and violent practices are more frequently recorded in the Hellenica, which is the main historical work of Xenophon.This volume attempts to provide a comprehensive study of the subject of violence in Xenophon’s works and to demonstrate the coherence and consistency of his thought on it. This work aspires to be a contribution to classical scholarship since it attempts to: (1) shed further light on the literary character of Xenophon’s oeuvre; (2) offer new interpretation of passages and themes; and (3) put emphasis on passages that scholars have not pointed out and which offer important insights to the thought of Xenophon.
