Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commentary on St. Paul's Epistle: To the Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians and to Philemon N the present volume I have expounded the third group of St. Paul's Epistles, those written during his first imprison ment at Rome. It is well that the four Epistles are expounded in one volume. For they are most closely related in thought and expression, and unitedly present a very definite phase of St. Paul's thought; a marked development of the thought embodied in the great group already annotated. This rich development can be appreciated only by consecutive study of the whole group. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commentary on St. Paul's: Epistle to the Galatians This historic light on St. Paul and his surroundings, supported as it is by the united testimony of the writers of the early Church, affords evidence which in all ages has assured all students, even those who have doubted the authorship of other Epistles attributed to him, that at least these four Epistles are from the pen of the Great Apostle. This certainty of authorship gives to these Epistles a special value, even amid the other Epistles bearing St. Paul's name and to those who confidently accept them all as genuine. In harmony with this mutual relation of the Epistles, the three volumes in which I have annotated them form one com plete work. I have endeavoured, by tracing the line of thought of these Epistles and by comparing them each with the others and with the Book of Acts, to reproduce the thought andthe movements and surroundings of the Apostle of the Gentiles at the noonday of his career. This reproduction I hope to supplement by another volume expounding the profound Epistles written during the seclusion of his first long imprisonment, viz. Those to the Ephesians, Philippians, Colos sians, and Philemon: by a fifth volume comprising both his two earliest and his three latest extant Epistles, viz. Those written during his second missionary tour, to the newly-founded Church at Thessalonica, and those written, as I hope to prove, after his release from his first imprisonment and to conclude the series by a volume expounding St. Paul's teaching as a whole, com paring it with that of the other writers of the New Testament, and tracing the manifold teaching of these various writers to its one immediate source in the Gospel proclaimed by Christ and to its ultimate source in the Eternal Purpose of God. Download or read book Sacra Pagina Colossians and Ephesians written by Margaret Y. MacDonald and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2016-03-16 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No two works in the Pauline Epistles resemble each other as closely as Colossians and Ephesians. Often recognized for their majestic tone and powerful theological statement, Colossians and Ephesians also present many challenges of interpretation. Most commentaries on these letters seem preoccupied with the same few issues, particularly the question of authorship. As MacDonald addresses these classic questions, she offers a fresh perspective on Colossians and Ephesians by making use of insights from the social sciences. Moreover, by paying attention to subtle differences between the two letters, she brings their distinct perspectives into sharp relief. MacDonald highlights the interplay between Colossians and Ephesians and the social life of New Testament communities. She illustrates how the texts reflect ancient cultural values and are influenced by particular aspects of community life such as worship and household existence. In particular, she reflects on the issues faced by these communities as they formed institutions and interacted with the society around them. She shows the struggles of the New Testament communities to survive and maintain a distinct identity in first-century society.
