Book Critique of Pure Reason

Download or read book Critique of Pure Reason written by Immanuel Kant and published by . This book was released on 1900 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metaphysicians have for centuries attempted to clarify the nature of the world and how rational human beings construct their ideas of it. Materialists believed that the world (including its human component) consisted of objective matter, an irreducible substance to which qualities and characteristics could be attributed. Mindthoughts, ideas, and perceptionswas viewed as a more sophisticated material substance. Idealists, on the other hand, argued that the world acquired its reality from mind, which breathed metaphysical life into substances that had no independent existence of their own. These two camps seemed deadlocked until Immanuel Kant's Critique of Pure Reason endeavored to show that the most accurate theory of reality would be one that combined relevant aspects of each position, yet transcended both to arrive at a more fundamental metaphysical theory. Kant's synthesis sought to disclose how human reason goes about constructing its experience of the world, thus intertwining objective simuli with rational processes that arrive at an orderly view of nature.

Like Copernicus, Kant dared to question the ordinary perspective from which we habitually view the world. Kant's moderate form of skepticism is known as "transcendental idealism," and its primary tenet is that we cannot know things as they are in themselves because we only know things as they appear to us. His thesis had a monumental influence on the culture of the last two centuries, giving rise to cultural movements and theoretical approaches including: German Idealism, Romanticism, Modernism, Marxism, Existentialism, Psychoanalysis, Structuralism, Post-Structuralism, and even Quantum Physics.

Book excerpt: In Kant's "second critique," following on from his Critique of Pure Reason, one of the great thinkers of the Enlightenment explores the requirements and necessities of morality and ethics in an age dominated by reason. Assuming the truth of Christianity and the existence of an afterlife, Kant lays the groundwork for a moral science to replace superstition, and for logical ethics to replace less reliable human emotion. First published in 1788, this is still required reading for all students of modern moral philosophy. German metaphysician IMMANUEL KANT (1724-1804) served as a librarian of the Royal Library, a prestigious government position, and as a professor at Knigsberg University. His other works include Observations on the Feeling of the Beautiful and Sublime (1764), Critique of Pure Reason (1781), and Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals (1785).
