Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commemorative Discourse on the Death of Abraham Lincoln To keep in memory, and to review with gratitude and honor, the lives of men conspicuous for great services, has the sanction of the universal judgment of mankind. In so doing, the goodness which would be ephemeral is embalmed; the examples worthy of perpetual imitation are kept as ever-burning lights in the darkness of the world. It is thus history adorns her temple with noble statues, and fills her archives with the choicest wisdom of the ages. It is thus that prophets and kings, benefactors and holy men, being dead, speak on from generation to generation, and the righteous are in everlasting remembrance. A prince and a great man has fallen, and a grateful people will establish his memorial: they will enrol his name with the illustrious benefactors of the world, and treasure his deeds amongst the worthiest traditions that are handed down to after-times. Book excerpt: Excerpt from God's Way of Leading the Blind: A Discourse Commemorative of the Death of Abraham Lincoln, Delivered by Rev. Henry E. Butler, in the Congregational Church, Keeseville, April 23, 1865 There are times in human history when we realize how full of meaning are the words we use in daily speech. In ordinary life they seem the product of a breath, the common coin which passes with current stamp at all the marts of trade. The word, which is the body, seems to have capacity unfilled. The thought, which is its soul, is only a germ, into which new life being thrown, the growth is manifest. But when the thought receives impulse from the feeling; when emotion with overflowing stream crowds upon its barriers in speech, and the heart is filled to its utmost with the great tidal wave that comes surging inland from the wide deep ocean of human passion, 'tis then the infant goes forth to do a strong man's labor, 'tis then that ordinary sounds born upon the lips are intensified with meaning, and the great depths of feeling, broken up, refuse to be contained within the bounds of articulate expression. The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed, saying, let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord Shall have them in derision. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Bulkley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Uncrowned Nation, a Discourse Commemorative of the Death of Abraham Lincoln, Sixteenth President of the United States: Preached in the First Presbyterian Church of Plattsburgh, N. Y. April 19, 1865 A ruler's death could scarcely have taken place at a more inopportune time we thought, and therefore our grief was aggravated. As in previous stages of our contest, we may err in our calculations of what is needful in an emergency, but it seemed to us, at the first intelligence of our bereavement, that it would be well nigh ruin to our national interests. Though we are recovered from this feeling, and more hope ful, we are still anxious and apprehensive. The ship of state will perhaps steer wildly we fear, now that the skilled helms man is taken from the wheel. His eye has grown wary as he has peered long into the cloudy night, through which we have been sailing - his hand has grown more firm, as the shock of the storm has threatened to tear away its grasp his heart has grown more undaunted, as danger has lowered more fearfully near. And now as we are approaching the shallows and bars, - the narrow and tortuous channels, - the sunken rocks and boiling breakers, - over and through which we must enter the port of peace, we need all these for our safe piloting into the haven of our desires. If I have not misinter preted public opinion, there has been an increasing confidence in President Lincoln's sincerity and integrity of purpose, practical and comprehensive good sense, - benevolence andmagnanimity of disposition, and whatever have been our theories of administration, whoever our preferred exponents of these, -the people as a whole, were settling down into acquiescence and trust, in assurance that the reins of govern ment were in wise and safe hands. It cannot be less than a severe calamity which removes him at this juncture. The man upon whom divine providence has let fall the mantle of succession may prove a true and fit man. God make him so, we heartily pray, in his private character and Official acts. Yet we mourn, anxiety largely entering into our mourning, for the proven and the trusty has been taken away, and we crave the quieting of apprehension, lest some national disaster be brought upon us by mal-administration. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorial Discourse on the Character of Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States: Delivered at Hollis, on the Day of the National Fast, June 1, 1865 WE are here to-day, my friends, at the request of the highest authority of our land, to unite with the great mass of our countrymen in the memorial services of our late lamented and endeared President. The mysterious events of a Wise Providence have taken from us the second Father of our Country, and a bereaved nation mourns. A cruel and ruthless hand has smitten him down, and bathed us all in tears. We have come to mingle our sorrows; to dwell upon his virtues, and to learn such lessons as his untimely death is calculated to teach. Never, since time began, has the departure of one man filled so many hearts With sadness, and never have so many gathered, on one occasion of mourning, as will be gathered this day. The cruel manner of our President's death; the critical period of public affairs in which he fell; the loss of so much experience, talent, and honest purpose, and the sundering of so many cords of personal love, all conspire to make the event one of the most mournful interest. All civilized nations tender us their sympathy, and unite with us in sorrowing over our sad bereavement. Thirty millions of hearts have been pierced by one foul blow of the assassin.
