Book Royal Wills in Britain from 1509 to 2008

Download or read book Royal Wills in Britain from 1509 to 2008 written by Michael L. Nash and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-02-09 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book on Royal Wills since 1780 and aims to take over where the previous ones (in 1775 and 1780) left off. Therefore the period 1509 to 2008 is covered. It aims to uncover the many dilemmas and conundrums they have had to deal with, against a backdrop of Imperial splendor and political strife, society scandals and in later instances, a disintegrating infrastructure. This period covers the wills of Henry VIII, Edward VI and George I, which all sought to divert the accepted rules of succession; the wills of Queen Charlotte and George III, which brought into sharp focus the differences between State and Personal property; and the wills from Prince Albert to the present day (with a few exceptions) which sought to exclude the public from seeing their contents, in devices known as ‘closing’ and ‘sealing up’ the wills. The authority by which the latter was done has been seriously questioned in signal cases in 2007 and 2008. Sources drawn upon include not only the Royal Archives, but the Kilmorey Papers in the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland, and the Teck Letters in Wellington College, where Prince Frank received much of his early education. The sealed will of Prince Frank of Teck, the brother of Queen Mary and great-uncle of the present Queen, is the seminal chapter in this study.

Book The Romance of William and the Werewolf

Download or read book The Romance of William and the Werewolf written by Michael Smith and published by Unbound Publishing. This book was released on 2024-12-05 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A magical, long-forgotten masterpiece, The Romance of William and the Werewolf is the story of two princes who overcame their wicked family to reclaim their inheritance and build a society based on tolerance and equality. Originally titled William of Palerne, it was first translated from French and then converted into an alliterative Middle English romance by an obscure Gloucestershire scribe in c. 1350. It has never been translated into modern English – until now. Written over 600 years ago, it is a multi-layered tale of poverty, justice, exile and 'otherness'; its themes of inheritance, the freedom of women, fairness and forgiveness, familial responsibility and social class, speak to us just as clearly today, and challenge us to reflect upon our class-driven politics and the corruption, entitlement and indifference which underlie it. As with Michael Smith’s other translations – Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and King Arthur’s Death – The Romance of William and the Werewolf will feature a detailed historical introduction, a comprehensive glossary and notes, and Michael’s own rich and beautiful linocut illustrations.

Four kings were murdered, two came close to being deposed, and the last—and most notorious, Richard III— was killed in a battle by rebels. Shakespeare wrote plays about six of them, further entrenching them in the national myth.Based on major contemporary sources and recent research, acclaimed historian Desmond Seward provides the first readable overview of the whole extraordinary dynasty, in one volume.

Book Learned in the Law 1882

Download or read book Learned in the Law 1882 written by William Henry Davenport Adams and published by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd.. This book was released on 2002 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A set of biographical sketches of eminent jurists from the 17th through 19th centuries, including Lord Bacon, John Selden, the Earl of Mansfield, Sir William Jones, and Lord Brougham. Intended to encourage emulation, Adams offers a series of "Great Man" portraits in the manner of Carlyle that emphasizes the outstanding moral character, determination, and diligence of his subjects and their crucial contributions to Britain. Like many Victorians, Adams feared that the professional specialization created by the growth of science and industry would eliminate the type of well-rounded personality dear to the English. This concern is evident in his choice of representative figures. He demonstrates in each case that these were men of parts with a breadth of interests that contributed to their greatness as jurists.
