Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Cluster of Nuts: Being Sketches Among My Own People Mo Craoibhin Cno. The Irish woods have sycamore and quicken, Chestnut and beech and elm-trees set a-row; And in the hazel copse the clusters thicken - Mo craoibhin cno! In the green hazels play the squirrel people, Bright-eyed and brisk not fearing any foe, As safe above the world as daw in steeple, Mo craoibhin cno! The nuts are sweeter to the dainty squirrels Than garden-fruit or blackberries aglow; Sweeter than to the youth his brown maid's curls - Mo craoibhin cno! I wandered by the hazels ere they withered, And heard the blackbirds liquid numbers flow; And from the bough a cluster brown I gathered - Mo craoibhin cno! Russet and small, but still within the brownness May hide some sweetness - pray you find it so! - As pleases squirrels in the old wood's loneness - Mo craoibhin cno! Brown nuts, my masters, from an Irish hazel! But if ye will not their rough flavour, go And leave my fruit for finer fruits that dazzle - Mo craoibhin cno! Book Michael Field

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sarah Parker
  • Publisher : Ohio University Press
  • Release : 2019-12-10
  • ISBN : 0821446924
  • Pages : 301 pages

Download or read book Michael Field written by Sarah Parker and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2019-12-10 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last twenty years, Michael Field has emerged as one of the most fascinating poets of the Victorian era. Through their collaborative partnership as “Michael Field,” Katharine Bradley and Edith Cooper engaged in the aesthetic and decadent movements of the fin de siècle, while their poetry and verse drama articulate ideas associated with the New Woman and boldly express queer and lesbian desire. Michael Field: Decadent Moderns extends the focus on these key literary and cultural contexts by emphasizing their continuing significance within twentieth-century literary modernism. Through a series of interdisciplinary essays, this book addresses Michael Field’s energetic engagements with a range of topics including ecology, perfume, tourism, art history, sculpture, formalism, classics, and book history. In doing so, Michael Field: Decadent Moderns highlights the modernity, radicalism, and relevance of their work, both within the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as well as in our own cultural moment. Contributors: Leire Barrera-Medrano, Joseph Bristow, Jill R. Ehnenn, Sarah E. Kersh, Kristin Mahoney, Catherine Maxwell, Alex Murray, Sarah Parker, Margaret D. Stetz, Kate Thomas, and Ana Parejo Vadillo.

Book The Selected Letters of Katharine Tynan

Download or read book The Selected Letters of Katharine Tynan written by Damian Atkinson and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-04-26 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A farmer’s daughter, a convent girl, a lover of the Irish countryside, a poet, novelist and short story writer, a journalist, a friend of the English during war and peace, a fighter for justice, a Catholic, but able to see and decry the interference of religion in politics: this is in part Katharine Tynan Hinkson (1859–1931), usually known as Katharine Tynan, who lived in Ireland and England, and wrote through the turbulent times of Irish politics, suffrage, the Great War, and civil war in Ireland. Her background was rural Ireland, her father being a prosperous land-owning farmer. Educated locally and at a convent, she left aged fourteen and spent much time reading and enjoying the countryside, which became a foundation for her poetry and storytelling. She was aware of the politics of Ireland through her politically active father, and she joined the short-lived Ladies’ Land League in 1881 and was a fervent admirer of Charles Stewart Parnell. Her first major literary friendship was with her mentor, the Jesuit Father Matthew Russell, editor of the Irish Monthly, who published much of her work. He introduced Katharine to the Catholic literary couple Wilfrid and Alice Meynell in London in 1884, a visit which formed a deep love and admiration for Alice. The Meynells published much of her poetry in the Weekly Register and Merry England. Katharine made many visits to England and settled in England in 1893 after her marriage to Harry Hinkson, making it her home until returning to Ireland in 1912. After the Great War, she moved between England and Ireland, finally settling in London where she died. Katharine’s life spanned Anglo-Irish politics, the suffrage movement, the Easter Rising of 1916, the Great War (her two sons served in the British Army) and its aftermath. Her letters cover these events and the friendships and correspondence with many literary persons, including George William Russell (A.E.), G. K. Chesterton, Wilfrid Scawen Blunt, Clement King Shorter, the writer Frank James Mathew and the novelist May Sinclair. An early friend of W. B. Yeats, she was seen as part of the Irish literary revival, although in a minor role. Throughout her life she suffered from very poor eyesight. She published five autobiographies, which, together with the letters, provide us with valuable insight into her life and times.

Book The Chariot of the Flesh

Download or read book The Chariot of the Flesh written by Hedley Peek and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1897 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is nearly eleven years since Alan Sydney left England, but I have only recently been released from my promise of secrecy. So sacred to me is the memory of our friendship, that, even now, I shrink from the task of narrating his strange and curious history. A strong impulse, however, urges me to break silence. The village of Anstead, near which we both lived, is in Surrey, possibly the best county in England to find mixed society. Here the old-fashioned farmers, the labourers who have never travelled as far as London, and a few country squires are mingled with, and influenced by, retired London shopkeepers, merchant princes--with or without H's--and a sprinkling of literary and scientific dabblers; these last are regarded with suspicion by all, but especially by the retired Army and Navy magnates.
