Book Responding to Intimate Partner Violence and Sexual Violence Against Women

Download or read book Responding to Intimate Partner Violence and Sexual Violence Against Women written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2013 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A health-care provider is likely to be the first professional contact for survivors of intimate partner violence or sexual assault. Evidence suggests that women who have been subjected to violence seek health care more often than non-abused women, even if they do not disclose the associated violence. They also identify health-care providers as the professionals they would most trust with disclosure of abuse. These guidelines are an unprecedented effort to equip healthcare providers with evidence-based guidance as to how to respond to intimate partner violence and sexual violence against women. They also provide advice for policy makers, encouraging better coordination and funding of services, and greater attention to responding to sexual violence and partner violence within training programmes for health care providers. The guidelines are based on systematic reviews of the evidence, and cover: 1. identification and clinical care for intimate partner violence 2. clinical care for sexual assault 3. training relating to intimate partner violence and sexual assault against women 4. policy and programmatic approaches to delivering services 5. mandatory reporting of intimate partner violence. The guidelines aim to raise awareness of violence against women among health-care providers and policy-makers, so that they better understand the need for an appropriate health-sector response. They provide standards that can form the basis for national guidelines, and for integrating these issues into health-care provider education.

Book Disclosure and Therapy

Download or read book Disclosure and Therapy written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rape is a problem in the United States. According to the National Victim Center (1995), 1.3 women are raped every minute. This qualitative study on the experiences of acquaintance rape survivors, examined acquaintance rape by searching for meaning behind their experiences. Stranger rape is a sexual assault by an individual who is a stranger; whereas, acquaintance rape is defined as sexual assault by an individual known to the victim (National Center for Victims of Crime and Treatment Center, 1992). Acquaintance rapes account for the majority of unreported rapes (Hall, 1995), and acquaintance rape victims tend to put the responsibility on themselves for being in that particular situation and blame themselves for the crime (National Victim Center, 1995; Koss, 2000). To explore the meaning behind the disclosure and therapy processes of acquaintance rape survivors, three acquaintance rape survivors were interviewed about their experiences regarding their disclosure and therapy process post-rape. Results of the data analysis indicate several themes including: social myths and societal blame impact disclosure, the reactions of persons disclosed to impact the healing and recovery process for victims, and therapy and participation in this research support victim participants' recovery. Implications for future research and clinical applications are discussed.

Book The Victim of Rape

Download or read book The Victim of Rape written by Lynda Lytle Holmstrom and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unprecedented in-depth account of how our major institutions respond to the crime of rape is the first empirical study of rape victims in the United States as they come into contact with those who staff our police stations, hospitals, and courthouses. As this engrossing study makes clear, rape does not end with the assailant's departure; the profound suffering of the victim can be diminished or heightened by the response of these institutions. The authors provide direct, on-the-scene reports of how rape victims confront and endure the often devastating effects of institutional processing. Their work is based on first-hand observations, personal interviews, and case histories that document the rape victim's plight, and includes tables that present all research findings in easy-to-grasp numerical terms. The authors note changes now taking place, and argue that further institutional changes must be made to delegitimize rape in our society. The new introductory essay locates The Victim of Rape within the context of four lines of research: studies looking at the criminal justice system processing of such cases, the connection of rape to everyday life, social-structural and ideological support for rape, and strategies for prevention.

Book Accounting for Rape

    Book Details:
  • Author : Irina Anderson
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2007-11-26
  • ISBN : 1134616872
  • Pages : 302 pages

Download or read book Accounting for Rape written by Irina Anderson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-11-26 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accounting for Rape presents an original perspective on the subject of rape, focusing on both female and male sexual violence. The authors investigate everyday beliefs about rape, to examine how blaming the victim and the normalization of rape are achieved by people in a discussion about sexual violence. They synthesize discursive psychology and a feminist standpoint to explore precisely how rape and rape victimhood are defined in ways that reflect the social, political and cultural conditions of society. By analysing conversational data, Anderson and Doherty suggest that the existing social psychological experimental research into rape and rape perception fails to analyse the subtlety and political significance of rape supportive reasoning. Accounting for Rape provides a critical interrogation of the dominant theories and methodologies, focusing on: How the gender and sexual orientation of alleged victims and perpetrators is crucial to social participants when making sense of a rape report and in apportioning blame and sympathy How arguments that are critical of alleged victims are built in ways that are 'face saving' for the participants in the conversations, and how victim-blaming arguments are presented as 'common sense'. The potential of applying this approach in both professional and academic contexts to promote attitude change. The book will be of great interest to those studying social and clinical psychology, cultural studies, sociology, women's studies and communication studies.

Book The Rape Crisis Intervention Handbook

Download or read book The Rape Crisis Intervention Handbook written by S.L. McCombie and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook is intended to be a comprehensive resource for those in volved in providing crisis intervention to rape victims. The medical, legal, and counseling needs of the rape victim are presented to prepare helping professionals to offer sensitive and skillful assistance to women who have suffered sexual assault. The interdisciplinary thrust of the book reflects our conviction that health professionals, police, and prosecuting attorneys must share their expertise and coordinate their efforts in order to successfully meet the multiple needs of rape victims and their families. While an exten sive literature on rape has developed in the past decade, to the best of our knowledge there is no single source for the practical treatment-oriented information sought by those who work directly with victims. The primary objective of this book is to offer just such a guide to service providers. The book is organized into sections that deal with a specific area of the treatment of victims. Detailed guidelines are provided for the nursing, med ical, counseling, police, and legal services involved in comprehensive crisis intervention. Interdisciplinary teaming and the emotional impact of rape on service providers are discussed by authors actively involved in rape crisis work. Rape laws are explained and court preparation for victim-witnesses is carefully outlined. Of particular relevance to counselors is an overview of crisis theory and a psychodynamic perspective on rape trauma.
