Book Handbook of Convex Geometry

Download or read book Handbook of Convex Geometry written by Bozzano G Luisa and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 803 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handbook of Convex Geometry, Volume A offers a survey of convex geometry and its many ramifications and relations with other areas of mathematics, including convexity, geometric inequalities, and convex sets. The selection first offers information on the history of convexity, characterizations of convex sets, and mixed volumes. Topics include elementary convexity, equality in the Aleksandrov-Fenchel inequality, mixed surface area measures, characteristic properties of convex sets in analysis and differential geometry, and extensions of the notion of a convex set. The text then reviews the standard isoperimetric theorem and stability of geometric inequalities. The manuscript takes a look at selected affine isoperimetric inequalities, extremum problems for convex discs and polyhedra, and rigidity. Discussions focus on include infinitesimal and static rigidity related to surfaces, isoperimetric problem for convex polyhedral, bounds for the volume of a convex polyhedron, curvature image inequality, Busemann intersection inequality and its relatives, and Petty projection inequality. The book then tackles geometric algorithms, convexity and discrete optimization, mathematical programming and convex geometry, and the combinatorial aspects of convex polytopes. The selection is a valuable source of data for mathematicians and researchers interested in convex geometry.

Book Linear Programming Duality

Download or read book Linear Programming Duality written by Achim Bachem and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an elementary introduction to the theory of oriented matroids. The way oriented matroids are intro- duced emphasizes that they are the most general - and hence simplest - structures for which linear Programming Duality results can be stated and proved. The main theme of the book is duality. Using Farkas' Lemma as the basis the authors start withre- sults on polyhedra in Rn and show how to restate the essence of the proofs in terms of sign patterns of oriented ma- troids. Most of the standard material in Linear Programming is presented in the setting of real space as well as in the more abstract theory of oriented matroids. This approach clarifies the theory behind Linear Programming and proofs become simpler. The last part of the book deals with the facial structure of polytopes respectively their oriented matroid counterparts. It is an introduction to more advanced topics in oriented matroid theory. Each chapter contains suggestions for furt- herreading and the references provide an overview of the research in this field.

Book Computational Oriented Matroids

Download or read book Computational Oriented Matroids written by Jürgen Bokowski and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-05-08 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oriented matroids play the role of matrices in discrete geometry, when metrical properties, such as angles or distances, are neither required nor available. Thus they are of great use in such areas as graph theory, combinatorial optimization and convex geometry. The variety of applications corresponds to the variety of ways they can be defined. Each of these definitions corresponds to a differing data structure for an oriented matroid, and handling them requires computational support, best realised through a functional language. Haskell is used here, and, for the benefit of readers, the book includes a primer on it. The combination of concrete applications and computation, the profusion of illustrations, many in colour, and the large number of examples and exercises make this an ideal introductory text on the subject. It will also be valuable for self-study for mathematicians and computer scientists working in discrete and computational geometry.

Book Matroid Theory and its Applications in Electric Network Theory and in Statics

Download or read book Matroid Theory and its Applications in Electric Network Theory and in Statics written by Andras Recski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I. The topics of this book The concept of a matroid has been known for more than five decades. Whitney (1935) introduced it as a common generalization of graphs and matrices. In the last two decades, it has become clear how important the concept is, for the following reasons: (1) Combinatorics (or discrete mathematics) was considered by many to be a collection of interesting, sometimes deep, but mostly unrelated ideas. However, like other branches of mathematics, combinatorics also encompasses some gen eral tools that can be learned and then applied, to various problems. Matroid theory is one of these tools. (2) Within combinatorics, the relative importance of algorithms has in creased with the spread of computers. Classical analysis did not even consider problems where "only" a finite number of cases were to be studied. Now such problems are not only considered, but their complexity is often analyzed in con siderable detail. Some questions of this type (for example, the determination of when the so called "greedy" algorithm is optimal) cannot even be answered without matroidal tools.

Book Oriented Matroids

Download or read book Oriented Matroids written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oriented matroids are a very natural mathematical concept which presents itself in many different guises and which has connections and applications to many different areas. These include discrete and computational geometry, combinatorics, convexity, topology, algebraic geometry, operations research, computer science and theoretical chemistry. This is the second edition of the first comprehensive, accessible account of the subject. It is intended for a diverse audience: graduate students who wish to learn the subject from scratch; researchers in the various fields of application who want to concentrate on certain aspects of the theory; specialists who need a thorough reference work; and others at academic points in between. A list of exercises and open problems ends each chapter. For the second edition, the authors have expanded the bibliography greatly to ensure that it remains comprehensive and up-to-date, and they have also added an appendix surveying research since the work was first published.

Book Combinatorial Algebraic Topology

Download or read book Combinatorial Algebraic Topology written by Dimitry Kozlov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-01-08 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the first comprehensive treatment of combinatorial algebraic topology in book form. The first part of the book constitutes a swift walk through the main tools of algebraic topology. Readers - graduate students and working mathematicians alike - will probably find particularly useful the second part, which contains an in-depth discussion of the major research techniques of combinatorial algebraic topology. Although applications are sprinkled throughout the second part, they are principal focus of the third part, which is entirely devoted to developing the topological structure theory for graph homomorphisms.

  • ISBN : 9780817637644
  • Pages : 292 pages

Download or read book Coxeter Matroids written by Alexandre V. Borovik and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003-07-11 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Matroids appear in diverse areas of mathematics, from combinatorics to algebraic topology and geometry, and "Coxeter Matroids" provides an intuitive and interdisciplinary treatment of their theory. In this text, matroids are examined in terms of symmetric and finite reflection groups; also, symplectic matroids and the more general coxeter matroids are carefully developed. The Gelfand-Serganova theorem, which allows for the geometric interpretation of matroids as convex polytopes with certain symmetry properties, is presented, and in the final chapter, matroid representations and combinatorial flag varieties are discussed. With its excellent bibliography and index and ample references to current research, this work will be useful for graduate students and research mathematicians.
