Download or read book Mako Sharks written by Alessandro De Maddalena and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mako sharks, shortfin mako and longfin mako, belong to the family Lamnidae, which also includes the great white shark. Makos have very ancient origins, appearing in prehistoric oceans between 40 and 60 million years ago. The elegant shape, the curved prominent teeth and the tail shaped like a halfmoon make them unmistakable. The shortfin mako can be considered among the fastest of all sharks, since it can reach speeds of 35-56 km/h and can jump out of the water to more than 6 meters in height. Makos have the speed and agility to catch fast swimming prey, such as tunas, swordfishes and dolphins. Some makos have been found with a swordfish bill driven into their body after fighting with prey. Makos are considered dangerous animals: attacks on divers, swimmers and boats are known, but are rare because these predators prefer offshore waters. The shortfin mako is fished all over the world and is prized for the high quality of its meat. Moreover its fighting temper makes it one of the most sought-after prey by the sport-fishermen.

Download or read book Apple written by Antonella Gambotto-Burke and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Woman as comestible. Woman as kingmaker. Woman as oblivion. Why is our culture governed by the principle of separation? Beginning with a devastating exploration of the 1960s, understood up until now as the era of female liberation, free love and the tribal sharing of drugs, Antonella Gambotto-Burke deconstructs the past two centuries and shows how we are, in fact, moving towards the age of the Nietzschean übermensch, in which femininity will, if we do not change, be erased. She skilfully draws together diverse threads, from the shockingly personal to the broadest societal trends and cutting-edge scientific research, to construct a brilliant and startling thesis that medicinal and recreational drugs have rewired our bodies and brains to a near-incomprehensible extent. Anxiety, artificial wombs, brutality, the class system, depression, dieting, racism and other issues - including the first plausible theory for rubber fetishism and other 'kinks' such as choking or breathplay - are explained within the context of the dominant cultural paradigm. A devastating uppercut to a patriarchal ideology that has marred billions of lives, Apple: Sex, Drugs, Motherhood and the Recovery of the Feminine completely revises our understanding of addiction, art, drug use, homosexuality, murder, pornography, sex, war, and, critically, the significance of birth, infancy and motherhood in relation to human existence. You will never see anything the same way again.

Download or read book Mama written by Antonella Gambotto and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her compelling and ground-breaking new book, Mama: Love, Motherhood and Revolution, Antonella Gambotto-Burke explores how motherhood and love are intrinsically linked to human well-being and how a lack of respect for maternal love is at the root of widespread dissatisfaction with modern life. Part-memoir, part-philosophical call to arms, this is a brilliant, passionate and moving exploration of what it is to be a mother and wife in the twenty-first century. What does it mean to be intimate with those we love and what happens when we're not? How does motherhood tie into femininity, sexuality, status? How does society judge mothers and how does this influence them? How do working hours undermine our most important relationships? Why is our value system now exclusively achievement-based rather than based on intimacy? What is the future for our children and society in this increasingly functional culture devoid of emotion? Antonella not only explores this terrain with the great visionaries of modern childcare, but reveals the joys, intimacies and elisions that led to her own metamorphosis: among them, her corrosive relationship with her own mother, her 32-year-old brother's suicide, the emotional and philosophical revolution triggered by the birth of her daughter, and the traumatic end of her ten-year marriage. A beautifully eloquent and thought-provoking insight into the cultural significance of love and motherhood, Mama is unique in its scope, challenging our cultural capacity for intimacy. Why, Antonella asks, are we willingly forfeiting happiness in the pursuit of an ultimately meaningless ideal?

Download or read book International Perspectives in Values Based Mental Health Practice written by Drozdstoy Stoyanov and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-12-11 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book offers essential information on values-based practice (VBP): the clinical skills involved, teamwork and person-centered care, links between values and evidence, and the importance of partnerships in shared decision-making. Different cultures have different values; for example, partnership in decision-making looks very different, from the highly individualized perspective of European and North American cultures to the collective and family-oriented perspectives common in South East Asia. In turn, African cultures offer yet another perspective, one that falls between these two extremes (called batho pele). The book will benefit everyone concerned with the practical challenges of delivering mental health services. Accordingly, all contributions are developed on the basis of case vignettes, and cover a range of situations in which values underlie tensions or uncertainties regarding how to proceed in clinical practice. Examples include the patient’s autonomy and best interest, the physician’s commitment to establishing high standards of clinical governance, clinical versus community best interest, institutional versus clinical interests, patients insisting on medically unsound but legal treatments etc. Thus far, VBP publications have mainly dealt with clinical scenarios involving individual values (of clinicians and patients). Our objective with this book is to develop a model of VBP that is culturally much broader in scope. As such, it offers a vital resource for mental health stakeholders in an increasingly inter-connected world. It also offers opportunities for cross-learning in values-based practice between cultures with very different clinical care traditions.
