Book The Reconstruction of the Christian Revelation Claim

Download or read book The Reconstruction of the Christian Revelation Claim written by Stuart C. Hackett and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-01-07 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Hackett provides, in digestible form, a comprehensive, systematic, and pervasively philosophical apologetic for the Christian revelation claim. Although the approach is seriously philosophical, the text is free as possible of the earmarks of technical scholarship--reflecting the author's aspiration to reach the common person who has a deep interest in such questions. Thus, although positions, arguments, and counter-arguments are discussed (of necessity), these are set forth without distracting encumbrances. Specifically, this book is designed as a substantial textbook for college and seminary courses in apologetics. In his thorough introduction, Philosophical Prolegomena, a firm base for the whole study is established by initiating the reader firmly in epistemology and the concept of revelation. The main divisions are: -- Christiainity and the Revelation Cosmos: A Philosophical Case for a Theistic Metaphysic. -- Christianity and the Revelational Person: An Historical / Critical Case for the Incarnation of God in Jesus Christ. -- Christianity and the Revelational Word: The Propositional Expression of Revelation in Scripture. Dr. Hackett includes on every page parallel marginal summaries and outlines to guide the reader and to facilitate ready reference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reason Revelation: An Essay in Christian Apology For if we look back on the years that are past, we see that men have often thought the Christian Faith to be on its trial, when they, in fact, them selves were being tried by the Faith. It has remained, whether they in their brief life-time kept or lost it, to test their sons, as it had tested them. Celsus would have been unknown to us, but for Origen, and Julian, but for Cyril; in each case it was the Christian who survived. And we may be sure that the same will be the case in the end with the various problems of the present day. Minds may doubt, and hearts may fail, when called to face new modes of thought, or points of view; but the time must come when what is false in all these things will fade, and what is true will no more seem strange; and we shall then see that the fears to which they once gave rise were but phases, that were soon to pass, in the age-long life of the great religion of the Incarnation. Book Revelation of Jesus Christ

Download or read book Revelation of Jesus Christ written by Margaret Barker and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2000-11-02 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new and transforming approach to the Book of Revelation. Margaret Barker bases her study on a fresh reading of the primary sources. As an Old Testament scholar, she can read Revelation as Hebrew prophecy - ancient temple oracles which inspired Jesus and his own prophecies, and influenced the whole Jerusalem Church. Jerusalem was waiting for their Great High Priest to return and complete the Atonement at the end of the Tenth Jubilee. This expectation fuelled the revolt against Rome. Josephus, who deserted to Rome, was the false prophet. John, who escaped to Patmos, compiled Revelation as a record of the first generation. In the future, he taught, the Lord would return to his people in the Eucharist. This work illuminates the formative years of Christianity, in the social, religious and political situation of mid-first-century Palestine, in a quite remarkable way. It will have profound implications for the understanding of Christian origins and the development of Christian liturgy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book by Abjar Bakhou presents Medieval Christian author Gerasimus and his discussion with Islam. His aim was to show that Christian teachings are not irrational, but rather subtle and complex. As a Christian philosopher and theologian, Gerasimus used the experiences of those of the past to facilitate his own response to critics. However, two important differences separated him from earlier apologists, which demand his own insight and innovation. First, the new language of intellectual discourse was Arabic, which was not accommodating for expressing traditional Christian doctrine, and required the development of a vocabulary out of terms already heavily influenced by the Qur'anic worldview. Second, the new religion challenging Christianity was one of absolute monotheism, which shared neither a common scriptural nor cultural heritage, and rejected the very possibility of a Trinity and Incarnation. Although a common theme in early Christian apologetics was the refutation of Judaism, the debate generally centered on the interpretation of the Old Testament, showing that Jesus was indeed the Messiah. The Qur'an, while acknowledging Jesus as the Messiah, explicitly rejects the Christian doctrines of the Incarnation and the Trinity, and presents itself as the revelation, which supersedes all previous revelation. Thus, although Christians and Muslims share certain themes and figures (such as Creation and the Last Judgement, Abraham, Moses, Mary and Jesus), Muslims refuse evidence contrary to the Qur'an, leaving Christians without recourse to traditional scripture-based arguments. Gerasimus, as a Christian apologist and mutakallim, accepted these challenges and began the process of explaining and translating his faith in the new milieu to make it coherent and rational. In his treatise, Gerasimus reveals himself to be a full participant in this important period of intellectual history; he sets down the basic points of controversy and outlines a response to them in a form that would be an excellent introduction to Christian theology written for the Muslim environment. Gerasimus was also a mutakallim in his own right, the Christian counterpart to those Islamic scholars who sought to defend their faith through rational arguments. In an effort to argue the legitimacy of Christianity, Gerasimus attempts to create a common language that influences the meaning of terminology and concepts of intellectual development in Muslim - Christian debates. Such language would set the stage for centuries to come. This is certainly his greatest contribution.

Download or read book The Resurrection of Theism written by Stuart C. Hackett and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-01-21 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Christian world view," contends the author, "both needs and embodies a thoroughgoing, rational apologetic as a manifestation of its relevance to the contemporary mind. . . . Christian faith should be defended in terms of criteria which center in rational objectivity as the norm of truth and evaluation." The author, who stands in the tradition of Aquinas, Butler, Orr, and Tennant, deals first with the problem of epistemological approach (part 1). Then he tackles the apologetic of natural revelation, first setting forth the inadequacy of every major alternate to rational empiricism (part 2), then demonstrating the existence of the God of theism (part 3). Each chapter is well outlined, and these outlines appear together in an "Analytical Table of Contents." This feature, as well as a bibliography and index, makes this a useful textbook for courses in apologetics and philosophy.
