Download or read book Domination and the Arts of Resistance written by James C. Scott and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Play fool, to catch wise."--proverb of Jamaican slaves Confrontations between the powerless and powerful are laden with deception--the powerless feign deference and the powerful subtly assert their mastery. Peasants, serfs, untouchables, slaves, laborers, and prisoners are not free to speak their minds in the presence of power. These subordinate groups instead create a secret discourse that represents a critique of power spoken behind the backs of the dominant. At the same time, the powerful also develop a private dialogue about practices and goals of their rule that cannot be openly avowed. In this book, renowned social scientist James C. Scott offers a penetrating discussion both of the public roles played by the powerful and powerless and the mocking, vengeful tone they display off stage--what he terms their public and hidden transcripts. Using examples from the literature, history, and politics of cultures around the world, Scott examines the many guises this interaction has taken throughout history and the tensions and contradictions it reflects. Scott describes the ideological resistance of subordinate groups--their gossip, folktales, songs, jokes, and theater--their use of anonymity and ambiguity. He also analyzes how ruling elites attempt to convey an impression of hegemony through such devices as parades, state ceremony, and rituals of subordination and apology. Finally, he identifies--with quotations that range from the recollections of American slaves to those of Russian citizens during the beginnings of Gorbachev's glasnost campaign--the political electricity generated among oppressed groups when, for the first time, the hidden transcript is spoken directly and publicly in the face of power. His landmark work will revise our understanding of subordination, resistance, hegemony, folk culture, and the ideas behind revolt.
Download or read book We Speak a Different Tongue written by Yoonjoung Choi and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-18 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We Speak a Different Tongue: Maverick Voices and Modernity 1890-1939 challenges the critical practice of privileging modernism. In so doing, the volume makes a significant contribution to contemporary debates about re-visioning literary modernism, questioning its canon, and challenging its aesthetic parameters. By utilizing the term "modernity" rather than "modernism", the 16 essays housed in this volume foreground the writers who have been marginalised by both their contemporary modernist writers and literary scholars, while exploring the way in which these authors responded to the tensions,
Download or read book Drag written by Jacob Bloomfield and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024-10-08 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A must-read for anyone interested in the history of drag performance."--Publishers Weekly A rich and provocative history of drag's importance in modern British culture. Drag: A British History is a groundbreaking study of the sustained popularity and changing forms of male drag performance in modern Britain. With this book, Jacob Bloomfield provides fresh perspectives on drag and recovers previously neglected episodes in the history of the art form. Despite its transgressive associations, drag has persisted as an intrinsic, and common, part of British popular culture--drag artists have consistently asserted themselves as some of the most renowned and significant entertainers of their day. As Bloomfield demonstrates, drag was also at the center of public discussions around gender and sexuality in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, from Victorian sex scandals to the "permissive society" of the 1960s. This compelling new history demythologizes drag, stressing its ordinariness while affirming its important place in British cultural heritage.

Download or read book Raspberry Juice written by Lynne Wivanee and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2022-10-31 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although this is a novel, it is full of true life experiences that we all encounter at times: the break-up of a marriage and the anger and heartache it brings to all who are involved, our children being bullied at school and the pain surrounding that, the feeling of failure, lack of confidence in ourselves and the torture of following the procedures when someone dies, let alone dealing with our emotions. This book offers a possible way to look back at these experiences and view them from a totally different perspective, a more healthy and accepting one and not full of guilt for not being ‘good enough’. We are all ‘good enough’ and we do the best we can with the resources we have at the time, we can do no better. Scattered throughout there are references to books, song lyrics and poetry that give a positive aspect to changing our whole view of our lives and seeing it all as a true learning experience to accept and welcome even though some of our experiences may have been horrendous at the time, there is still a way to gain from them, in retrospect.

Download or read book The Soundies written by Mark Cantor and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2023-04-19 with total page 2077 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1940s saw a brief audacious experiment in mass entertainment: a jukebox with a screen. Patrons could insert a dime, then listen to and watch such popular entertainers as Nat "King" Cole, Gene Krupa, Cab Calloway or Les Paul. A number of companies offered these tuneful delights, but the most successful was the Mills Novelty Company and its three-minute musical shorts called Soundies. This book is a complete filmography of 1,880 Soundies: the musicians heard and seen on screen, recording and filming dates, arrangers, soloists, dancers, entertainment trade reviews and more. Additional filmographies cover more than 80 subjects produced by other companies. There are 125 photos taken on film sets, along with advertising images and production documents. More than 75 interviews narrate the firsthand experiences and recollections of Soundies directors and participants. Forty years before MTV, the Soundies were there for those who loved the popular music of the 1940s. This was truly "music for the eyes."
