Book A Child s History of England

Download or read book A Child s History of England written by Charles Dickens and published by Lindhardt og Ringhof. This book was released on 2021-02-26 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "There were two Popes at this time (as if one were not enough!), and their quarrels involved Europe in a great deal of trouble." If only history could always be this fun! Unlike Shakespeare’s history plays before him, Charles Dickens doesn’t fictionalize British history here as much as he just makes it incredibly readable and entertaining. A Child's History of England is written chronologically with no complicated analysis, but full of great stories and anecdotes. It reads like a novel but is fairly accurate, and any child as well as adult will come away from it with good knowledge of basic English history. Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was an English author, social critic, and philanthropist. Much of his writing first appeared in small instalments in magazines and was widely popular. Among his most famous novels are Oliver Twist (1839), David Copperfield (1850), and Great Expectations (1861).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Arthur's History of England Though I have not the happiness to be a mother, my love of children has led me to think a good deal about them. Their amusements, and their lessons. This little history was written for a real little arthur, and I have endeavoured to write it nearly as I would tell it to an intelligent child. I well remember what I wanted to be told myself, in addition to what I found in my lesson-book, when I was first allowed to read the History of England, and I hope I have answered most of the questions I recollect to have wished to ask. I may have failed in satisfying the almost bound less inquiries of intelligent children; and I could wish that the mother or governess, who may put this little book into the hands of her pupils, would read each chapter herself before she gives it to a child, that she may be ready with answers to such questions as the chapter may suggest. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Child's Book of England You can be glad that you are English without being so silly as to think that the English are any better than the other peoples of the world. And you will find it easier to understand how foolish this would be when you read in my book from how many different races we English people are descended. Indeed this England of ours has been made great by people who have come from many different countries. When I wrote The Child's Book of France, I told you that I meant it to be a Peace book, because I believe that the more we know about other nations the less danger there is of quarrels and wars. The Child's Book of England is a peace book too. You must first know all about your own country and love your own country before you can understand other countries. You must begin by being good English men and women before you can become what ar citizens of: the world. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Old English History for Children Classic Reprint

Download or read book Old English History for Children Classic Reprint written by Edward Augustus Freeman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-18 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old English History for Children With regard to the spelling of old-english names, I must plead guilty to a certain amount of inconsistency. My own feeling is in favour of always using the genuine spelling of the old names rather than the common Latin and French corruptions. But I find that many people are in a manner frightened at the unusual form which is thus given to names still in common use. I have therefore, somewhat at the ex pense of consistency, left some of the more common names, such as Alfred, Edward, and Edith, in their modern spelling; while other names which are less familiar to modern readers, and which often have no One generally received modern shape, I have left in their ancient form. On the subject of old-english names and on one or two points connected with the old-english language I have added a few remarks at the end of this Preface. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales From English History: For Children Such volumes resemble the charts in which navigators delineate the barren ranges of hills that form the leading features of a country, while the soft undulations of the fertile valleys, the verdant groves, flowery plains, and pleasant streams, are absent from the picture. It is the object of the present work to offer to the Young a series of moral and instructive tales, each founded on some striking authentic fact in the annals of English History, in which royal or distinguished children were engaged; and in which it is the Author's wish to convey, in a pleasing form, useful and entertaining information illustrative of the manners, customs, and costume of the era connected with the events of every story; to which is also added, an Historical Summary, which the Author recommends to the attention of the juvenile reader, as containing many interesting particulars not generally to be met with in abridged histories. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Child and His Book: Some Account of the History and Progress of Children's Literature in England The subject of this volume is one which, from its nature, presents many difficulties as regards material. It is the fate of children's books to be destroyed by children themselves; to be put aside as insignificant in public and private collections; to be omitted from catalogues and bibliographies to be bound up, sometimes, in heterogene ous batches of half-a-dozen in one cover, without regard to unity of authorship or similarity of contents; to be preserved - if at all - either by a mere happy chance, or for the sake of illustrations they may happen to contain and finally, in these modern days, to be hunted out for deportation to America. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Plain and Short History of England, for Children: In Letters From a Father to His Son, With a Set of Questions at the End of Each Letter The following Letters are little else than a reprint of a very short History of England, first published in the "Cottager's Monthly Visitor." A few alterations, omissions, and additions, have been made, for the sake of adapting the remarks to children of all classes of society, as well as those for whom they were originally written.
