Book A Check List of the Slugs Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Check List of the Slugs Classic Reprint written by T. D. A. Cockerell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Check-List of the Slugs L. Sgzzammatz'zzus, Morelet, &c., have for years been completely misunderstood Another difficulty relates to the limit of species. In England we find comparatively few species, and these for the most part very distinct from one another, so that we are hardly prepared for the numerous closely allied forms of Southern Europe and elsewhere. [jr/tax maxi/11115 and L. flavus, for instance, are subgenerically distinct; and English authors having in mind suich distinctions as they present, have at various times refused to recognise species or subspecies differing in less degree. Thus Arz'on lzorlezzsls and A. Fasoz'atas, T oslaoella lzalz'o/z'zlm and T. Sozzz'zzlum, ' and other valid species, 'have been long confounded. When we examine the maxi/nus group Of Lz'ozax, the gagates group Of Amalia, the law's group Of Agriolimax, &c., the sharp distinctions between species seem to be altogether lost. In Central Europe the subspecies or species allied to Lz'max maxi/nus are numerous and polymorphic, so that, despairing of finding good lines Of separation, authors have sometimes proposed to unite them under a single name. Yet to thus confound maxz'mz/s, oz'nereo-mgor, and geograp/zz'ms, &c., tends rather to obscure facts of great interest, and in the present list all such forms are given the rank of subspecies, which seems best to express their true standing. This gradation of forms, though so annoying to the pure systematist, is to the evolutionist full of interest, and the more carefully the units (whether species, subspecies, or varieties) are studied, the greater is the light thrown on the making Of species. The slugs are by no means exceptional in furnishing such evidence of evolution, and it is very instructive to notice the way in which the difficulties of classification have been met in different groups Of organisms. The student may be referred to the writings Of Allen and Merriam on North American Rodents, of W. H. Edwards on Argyzzm's, of C. B. Adams on Jamaican Land Shells, Of Bebb and Buchanan White on willows, of Baker on roses, &c., for similar instances. Book An Annotated Checklist of the Marine Macroinvertebrates of Alaska

Download or read book An Annotated Checklist of the Marine Macroinvertebrates of Alaska written by David Thomas Drumm and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A current and comprehensive species list of marine invertebrates of Alaska is essential for effective management of living marine resources, sustainable fisheries, conservation of vulnerable ecosystems, and advancement of our knowledge of biodiversity and ecosystem function. Furthermore, the most current checklist available to resource managers and scientists is quite dated and limited in that it only includes the marine invertebrates of the southern coast of Alaska to California. Since that checklist was published, many new species have been described, many range extensions have been discovered, and considerable changes in higher-level systematics have been made. The checklist that we have compiled lists 3708 species and presents for each species the currently accepted scientific name and its significant synonyms, common names, type localities, geographic and depth distributions, a general statement of abundance in Alaska when known (e.g., rare, uncommon, common, abundant), and general remarks. It includes species recorded in the marine waters of Alaska from the intertidal zone, continental shelf, and upper continental slope to abyssal depths, from the Beaufort Sea at the Arctic border with Yukon, Canada; the eastern Chukchi Sea, the eastern Bering Sea, the Aleutian Islands to the western border with Russia; and the Gulf of Alaska to Dixon Entrance at the southern border with British Columbia. Sound and reliable taxonomic identifications are necessary to monitor and predict changes in the distribution and abundance of marine species. The current status and future direction of the study of Alaskan marine invertebrate biodiversity are briefly discussed.

Book Terrestrial Slugs

Download or read book Terrestrial Slugs written by A. South and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years slugs have become increasingly important, partly because several species are agricultural and horticultural pests and partly because theyhave proved to be useful experimental animals, particularly in the field of neurophysiology. Most of the early works which included slugs were essentially taxonomic but the book byTaylor (1902-1907) contained a great deal of biological information about slugs, some of which is still relevant today. The publication of the book by Runham and Hunter (1970) represented a milestone in slug research, providing a comprehensive survey of current knowledge about slugs. The book by Godan (1983) on snailsand slugswas mainly concerned with theeconomic importanceof theseanimals. The purpose of the present book is to present a review of current knowledgeofthebiologyandecologyofslugs, togetherwith theirstatusand control as pests. Although relatively little is known about the biology and ecology of tropical slugs and most information is taken from work on European slugs, the European pest species have become widely distributed throughout temperate regions and this book should be of interest world wide. It is written as a source of information for people seeking to control slug pests and, also, for those wishing to use slugs for research or teaching purposes. The book is intended particularly to provide a starting point for those beginning research on slugs and an extensive bibliography has been provided.

Book Single Family Selective Rehabilitation

Download or read book Single Family Selective Rehabilitation written by Enterprise Foundation Staff and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The procedures in this manual distill six years of learning about the most efficient acquisition and construction methods in this country for high volume production of housing affordable to low-income people. The people in the Rehab Work Group at The Enterprise Foundation have gathered this information first-hand and conveyed it in training workshops on produQtion management throughout the country. Over 2000 participants in the workshops have included rehab specialists from city housing departments, con struction managers of single and multifamily rehab projects, program managers from both nonprofit housing development organizations and city rehab depart ments, as well as students in colleges and universities. They are becoming the backbone of a new cadre of effective producers of affordable housing. In the 30 cities and several rural areas where we have both learned and applied these production management techniques, they have resulted in savings of 5, 10, even 25 percent of the cost of housing development. The Enterprise Foundation is a national, nonprofit organization that my wife Patty and I launched in 1982. The Foundation's mission is to see that all very low-income Americans have the opportunity for fit and affordable housing within a generation, and work their way up and out of poverty into the main stream of American life.
