Book excerpt: NEW PRINT WITH PROFESSIONAL TYPE-SET IN CONTRAST TO SCANNED PRINTS OFFERED BY OTHERS A Character Of The Province Of Maryland: Described In Four Distinct Parts; Also A Small Treatise On The Wild And Naked Indians (Or Susquehanokes) Of Maryland, Their Customs, Manners, Absurdities, And Religion. Together With A Collection Of Historical Letters. A New Edition With An Introduction And Copious Historical Notes. By John Gilmary Shea, Ll.D. This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Character of the Province of Maryland OF the few descriptions of Maryland written in the seventeenth century, this is decidedly the most pretentious. Its primeval savor, the peculiarity of its style, and its unique account of the mighty Susquehannas, together with its portrayal of the early white settlers of that province as a well disposed people living under a well-ordered government in the midst Of Nature's bountiful gifts, make it an enduring attraction to the curious reader; and when read in connection with other literature on the subject it is not without its value to the most serious student of our early history. Book excerpt: In 1658, George Alsop left England for Maryland, where he worked as an 'indented' servant in Baltimore County, under the government of Lord Baltimore. It seems highly probable that the lord proprietor and governor, both eager to attract laborers, encouraged Alsop to write this glowing account of the province. Alsop paints an extremely enticing picture of the bountiful natural resources of Mary-Land, followed by a discussion of the merits of "her well ordered Government," and her virtuous settlers. The benefits of apprenticeship and the necessity of servitude are discussed. "And what's a four years Servitude to advantage a man all the remainder of his dayes, making his predecessors happy in his sufficient abilities, which he attained to partly by the restrainment of so small a time?" The section on trade and commerce discusses the three main commodities of tobacco, 'furr and flesh.' Alsop's flattering words do not extend to his horror-filled chapter on the customs, manners and religion of the Susquehanock Indians. This slender volume, reprinted from the original edition of 1666, is enhanced by an introduction by Newton D. Mereness, Ph.D. that offers a glimpse of the author's life and times. The book concludes with a collection of letters written by the author.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Character of the Province of Maryland: Described in Four Distinct Part, Also a Small Treatise on the Wild and Naked Indians (or Susquehanokes) Of Maryland, Their Customs, Manners, Absurdities, and Religion Alsop's book appeared in 1666. One of the laudatory verses that preface it is dated January, 1665 (g), and' as it would appear that he did not remain in Maryland after the expiration of his four years, except perhaps for a short time in consequence of a fit of sickness to which he alludes, he probably returned to London to resume his old career. Of his subsequent life nothing is known, and though Allison ascribes to him a volume of Sermons, we may safely express our grave doubts whether the author of this tract can be suspected of anything of the kind. The book, written in a most extravagant style, contains no facts as to the stirring events in Maryland history which preceded its date, and in View, doubtless, of the still exasperated state of public feeling, seems to have studiously avoided all allusion to so unattractive a subject. As an historical tract it derives its chief value from the portion which comprises its Relation of the Susquehanna Indians. It was designed to stimulate emigration to Maryland, and is written in a vulgar style to suit the class it was to reach. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Statutes in Maryland It will conduce to clearness if the order of treatment be outlined at the start. First, the development of the question in Maryland is carried down from the earliest times to the end of the royal government. Here, as the colony grows, we see the development of a legal system, twisted out of natural progress by peculiarities of the Maryland palatinate govern ment. Then, leaving the discussion of Maryland, we trace briefly the legal doctrine declared by English judges and law yers, the value of which, for purposes of comparison, is equaled only by the information derived from' the experience of'other colonies, parts of which receive some discussion. Next, the reader is brought back to the legislative history of the) dispute, in the decade 1722-1732, and in the later phases to the present time. The narrative part of the work thus con cluded, we turn to the more interesting consideration of the arguments in the debate, as exhibited in certain important documents. Lastly, inquiry as to the total effect of these arguments in their relation to English and American colonial history leads us to a résumé and conclusion. Book Early Religious History of Maryland

Download or read book Early Religious History of Maryland written by B. F. Brown and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Religious History of Maryland: Maryland Not a Roman Catholic Colony, Religious Toleration Not an Act of Roman Catholic Legislation, Being the Substance of a Lecture Delivered Before the Guild of All Saints Church, Baltimore The perversions of history which come before us with all the assurance of truth, are both hurtful and difficult of correction. They mislead successive generations, deceiving their judgment and shaping their action. Tradition and myth form a large part of what men call history; and human selfishness, credulity, and prejudice, transmute them into the solidity of well-accredited facts. No sphere of human thought is so prolific of such misleading as the religious history of individuals and nations. Often the opinion of many generations respecting some historical character or action is utterly away from the truth; because ignorance or prejudice has misstated the facts of the case; and most persons are content to accept the current view, without questioning its accuracy. In this way history is manufactured from falsehood or fancy, while frequent and confident repetition of the same lie will often silence the timid remonstrant, and confirm in error the doubtful questioner. The good people of Maryland, in common with a large part of our whole nation, and thinking people everywhere, have been accustomed to receive, as an unquestionable fact, an assertion respecting the early history of Maryland, its settlement and government, which has no foundation in point of fact; yet has been used to mislead the ignorant, and silence the honest inquirer after truth. The error in question has been incorporated into our school-books, asserted in our newspapers, reiterated by politicians, in the interest of partisan discussion, and preached from pulpit and rostrum, until nearly our whole people give it credence, and regard the man who would call it in question as either wanting in knowledge, or blinded by prejudice.
