This book was released on 2016 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction: Class II Division 1 malocclusions are characterized by a retrusive mandible and prominent upper incisors. Despite Class II malocclusions being one of the most frequently treated cases in orthodontists' office, there is no uniform consensus in the orthodontic community on the best treatment modality and biomechanical approach to use in treating patients with Class II malocclusions. Purpose: This paper examines the end-of-treatment outcomes of severe Class II Division I malocclusion patients treated with surgical versus non-surgical approaches. Study Design: This is a retrospective study of consecutively treated severe Class II Division I patients at the University of Iowa. Initial and deband lateral cephalometric radiographs were compared between 45 non-surgical and 21 surgical patients. All patients that were debanded between the ages of 13 to 19 years were included. Multivariable regression analyses were used to examine differences in outcomes between treatment groups. Results: Following adjustment for patient level confounders (age, gender, and race), those treated surgically had better end of treatment cephalometric outcomes. Those treated surgically had a more balanced skeletal profile, greater reduction in overjet, and improvement in ANB angle (p

Book Cephalometric Changes Observed Following Long Term Use of the Bimler Functional Appliance in Class II Division 1 Malocclusions

Download or read book Cephalometric Changes Observed Following Long Term Use of the Bimler Functional Appliance in Class II Division 1 Malocclusions written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bimler appliance is one of many functional appliances developed during the evolution of functional orthodontics and is still used to treat patients today. Dr. Bimler was a firm believer that functional appliances should treat the patient to their individual limits of adaptability, and treating beyond this adaptability was an invitation for future relapse. The goal of this study was to evaluate cephalometric changes observed in Class II division 1 patients who received long-term therapy utilizing the Bimler appliance. Twenty-five patients (15 females and 10 males) for inclusion in this study were drawn from records donated to the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine from the practice of the late HP Bimler in Wiesbaden, Germany. All patients showed Class II division 1 malocclusions at the start of treatment, were treated solely using the Bimler appliance for an extended treatment period, and had initial, progress, and final cephalometric radiographs available. Each radiograph was digitized and traced by a single operator utilizing the Dolphin Imaging System, and a cephalometric analysis was completed. From the results, it would appear that saggital correction in Class II division 1 cases was achieved mainly via dental changes, with only a minor contribution by changes in skeletal relationships. Treatment effects of the Bimler appliance showed statistically significant changes from baseline (P0.05) for all measures except FMA, interincisal angle, and Wits. The decrease in overjet was achieved both by a significant uprighting of the maxillary incisors ( -6.04) and flaring (proclination) of the lower incisors (4.956) over the entire treatment period. Significantly larger effects were seen during the initial treatment period (T1-T2) compared to the later treatment period (T2-T3) for ANB, ANS-Me, U1-SN, and L1-MP (p0.05). These measures accounted for most of the treatment effect of the appliance that could not be attributed to normal growth alone. Results from this study suggests that clinicians who utilize the Bimler appliance to treat Class II division 1 cases should expect to see a majority of the correction during the first 24 months of treatment, and should expect diminished treatment effects should the therapy continue significantly beyond that point.

Book Orthodontic Management of Uncrowded Class II Division 1 Malocclusion in Children

Download or read book Orthodontic Management of Uncrowded Class II Division 1 Malocclusion in Children written by John C. Bennett and published by Elsevier Health Sciences. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From an award-winning author, this concise and visual guide describes the two-phase treatment approach to the orthodontic management of children with uncrowded Class II division one malocclusion. In this widely accepted treatment method, a bionator (Andresen) appliance is used in phase one, followed in phase two by high quality preadjusted fixed appliances. Properly managed, and with correct case selection and timing, this system of treatment produces high-quality results, and can be the easiest route to a successful outcome in many patients. A new book by one of the most successful orthodontics authors in the world which offers a concise and easily assimilated account of the treatment of an important group of orthodontic patients. Describes the two phase treatment approach a functional appliance in phase one, and the latest and best in bracket and wire technology in phase two. This produces consistently high-quality results and is the easiest route to an ideal outcome in many patients. Stage by stage case histories enhance the readers understanding of the system. Lavishly illustrated with top-quality colour photographs and line diagrams. Has a focus on methods of optimising patient cooperation, a topic which is often overlooked. Discusses difficult situations where growth or cooperation levels are below expectations.
