Book A Catalogue of the Fishes Known to Inhabit the Waters of North America North of the Tropic of Cancer

Download or read book A Catalogue of the Fishes Known to Inhabit the Waters of North America North of the Tropic of Cancer written by David Starr Jordan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-16 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Catalogue of the Fishes Known to Inhabit the Waters of North America, North of the Tropic of Cancer: With Notes on the Species Discovered in 1883 and 1884 The Synopsis of the Fishes of North America, by David S. Jordan and Charles H. Gilbert (bulletin United Sf tes National Museum N o. 16) was finished in September, 1882, and was issued to the public about April 1, 1883. Since the publication of that work an active study of North Ameri can fishes has brought to light many species not included in the Synop sis, and has shown various errors in the nomenclature of species already known. The additions are chiefly in the Bassalian or deep-sea fauna of the Atlantic, in the tropical fauna of the Florida Keys, and in the fresh-water fauna of the lower part of the Mississippi Valley. It was at first determined to issue these addenda in the form of ah nual supplements to the Synopsis, but the publication of the supplement for 1883 having been delayed till January, 1885, it has been thought best to unite the lists for 1883 and 1884, and to put the matter in the present form. I have, therefore, given a list representing the present state of our knowledge of the fishes found north of the Tropic of Cancer, in American waters. In all cases where a species is included which is not in the Synopsis, or in which a name is used in the latter work, different from that here adopted, I have given an explanation, reference or description in the form of a foot-note. Species already fully described elsewhere in publications of the U. S. National Museum are not redescribed here. Book American Fishes

Download or read book American Fishes written by G. Brown Goode and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Fishes: A Popular Treatise Upon the Game and Food Fishes of North America, With Especial Reference to Habits and Methods of Capture "Come, let us discourse about fish," said Athenæus, in his "Deipnosophia," and so said Mr. A. R. Hart, coming into my study last January. "Write us a book about fish and fishing in America," he urged, and since, as it happens, I know more about fish and fishing in America than I do about anything else, I consented. This volume has been prepared for the use at* the angler, the lover of nature, and the general reader. It is not intended for naturalists, and the technicalities of zoological description have therefore been avoided ; for the concise and precise phraseology of science, admirable though it be tor the use of those who have been trained to employ it, is to others not only misleading, but it may be, repulsive. I have aimed to include in my discussion every North American fish which is likely to be of interest to the general reader, either because of its gameness or its economic uses. All others are excluded, because, from the standpoint of scientific interest, every one of the seventeen hundred and fifty species indigenous to our continent has equal claim to consideration, and to discuss, or even casually mention them all, within the limits of a book of ordinary size, would be next to impossible. President Jordan's recent pamphlet, entitled "A Catalogue of the Fishes Known to Inhabit the Waters North of the Tropic of Cancer, with notes on the Species Discovered in 1883 and 1884," contains, with its indexes. 184 pages, and this is merely a list. His "Synopsis of the Fishes of North America," which simply enumerates and gives brief diagnoses of the fourteen hundred or more species known in 1882, contains 1018 pages. Book Inland Fishes of the Greater Southwest

Download or read book Inland Fishes of the Greater Southwest written by W. L. Minckley and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive new book replaces and substantially expands upon the landmark Fishes of Arizona, which has been the authoritative source since it was first published in 1973. Inland Fishes of the Greater Southwest is a one-volume guide to native and non-native fishes of the lower Colorado River basin, downstream from the Grand Canyon, and of the northern tributaries of the Sea of Cortez in the United States and Mexico. In all, there are in-depth accounts of more than 165 species representing 30 families. The book is not limited to the fish. It provides insights into their aquatic world with information on topography, drainage relations, climate, geology, vegetational history, aquatic habitats, human-made water systems, and conservation. A section of the book is devoted to fish identification, with keys to native and non-native families as well as family keys to species. The book is illustrated with more than 120 black-and-white illustrations, 47 full-color plates of native fishes, and nearly 40 maps and figures. Many native fish species are unique to the Southwest. They possess interesting and unusual adaptations to the challenges of the region, able to survive silt-laden floods as well as extreme water temperatures and highly fluctuating water flows ranging from very low levels to flash floods. However, in spite of being well-adapted, many of the fish described here are threatened or endangered, often due to the acts of humans who have altered the natural habitat. For that reason, Inland Fishes of the Greater Southwest presents a vast amount of information about the ecological relationships between the fishes it describes and their environments, paying particular attention to the ways in which human interactions have modified aquatic ecosystemsÑand to how humans might work to ensure the survival of rapidly disappearing native species.
